The Beta Eta Chapter of Sigma Nu at Indiana University was chartered in 1892 and since that time more
than twenty-six hundred men have joined our ranks. No chapter can boast of more loyal alumni, men
of renowned service to their country, communities, University and Fraternity than Beta Eta. Our alumni,
simply stated, are business, professional, and community leaders nationwide.
In the late 1800s, “literary societies” were the predecessors to fraternities at Indiana University. In
1892, The Independent Literary Society became the Beta Eta chapter of Sigma Nu at Indiana University.
Over our 116 year history, our Chapter has trained and developed young men of exceptional character
and dedication.
The impact of Beta Eta on Indiana University is unparalleled. Six shrines honoring Beta Eta alumni
adorn the Indiana University campus: The Herman B Wells Library, The Biddle Continuation Center
in the Union, the Wells Shrine in Kirkwood Hall, Beck Chapel, Armstrong Stadium, and the Herman
B Wells Statue. We have certainly left our mark in Bloomington as well as the many communities
where we have elected to practice our chosen professions and reside.
We are incredibly proud of our alumni’s tremendous personal and professional accomplishments,
their dedication to their communities, charities and activism. Beta Eta alumni have lead our University,
its Foundation, served its Board of Trustees and headed its athletic department. We have directed
corporations and endowments, run hospitals, nurtured and cared for the sick and disenfranchised,
prepared countless doctors, lawyers and judges, developed communities, raised families, and given back.
Our alumni have an important and storied history with Sigma Nu National, boasting five former
Regents: George M. Cook, Ward G. Biddle, Herman B Wells, E.G. White, and Donald K. Densborn.

Additionally, four of our alumni, Ward G. Biddle, Herman B Wells, Thomas M. Lofton, and
E.G. White have been inducted into the Sigma Nu Hall of Honor.
Notwithstanding these accolades, our most impressive accomplishments are found in the strengths
of the individual, life long friendships which were forged during our years at Sigma Nu in Bloomington.
Beta Eta’s fraternity experience teaches qualities not found in the classroom to help better prepare
our men for life: leadership, character, teamwork and a commitment to excellence.

Almost 60 years ago today, a group of Beta Eta alumni and active members, lead by the honorable
and legendary Herman B Wells, developed a plan for a “new” Sigma Nu chapter house. Their vision
included “fraternity row” on North Jordan where Sigma Nu would occupy two spectacular lots.
The plans developed by this group of dedicated alumni and current members laid the foundation for
a state of the art facility at 1015 North Jordan.
In 1952 Beta Eta moved from the Kirkwood Castle to 1015 North Jordan. Today, 60 years later, we
stand at similar crossroads for this and future generations of Beta Eta.
Now is the time to stand on the shoulders of the Founders of Sigma Nu, the Founders of Beta Eta, and
the alumni we grew up with in Bloomington to create a vision and execute a plan to sustain Sigma Nu
at Indiana University for the next 50 years. The time has come to develop a facility that will ensure our
viability at Indiana University so future generations can carry on our heritage and experience what being
a Sigma Nu means. The elements of this vision must include rebuilding the chapter house to provide
modern and unparalleled living and studying accommodations for future generations of Beta Etas.
The challenge of this project is extraordinary in the best of times. The rewards of succeeding in our
efforts will secure Beta Eta’s position as one of the greatest institutions at Indiana University.
