Social Advocacy Dossier (Till Summer 2011)

SOCIAL ADVOCACY PROJECTSPAF Karachi Institute of Economics and Technology

Purpose

It is often noted that pessimistic, apologetic and conformist mindset keeps majority of people among us from making a positive contribution toward society. Such individuals not only avoid making a contribution but also discourage any individual who tends to think otherwise.

This dossier shows the details and result of an initiative taken by PAFKIET management to help change such pessimistic trends. For this purpose BBA students are inspired and encouraged to think optimistically and realize their potential to change the society. This is done through constructivist approach (learn and realize by doing); students are empowered to establish a micro enterprise for an unemployed deserving individual.

This Dossier shows the impact of this initiative on the society … pride of which is felt by all those students involved in creating his social impact. The impact on KIET management and students has also been contagious, which can be seen through the exponentially increasing trend of number of families or individuals impacted in each semester.

Most of the students who participated now believe that if they can do it once, they can definitely do it again …

Sewing Machine, Education for Children of Ms. Mehlan

Ms. Mehlan a Widow lives in Khairpur mir's, mother of four children, has no regular source of income.

Students have provided her a Sewing Machine, Now her three children’s Have admission in a local school and the eldest one 15 years old is also learning sewing.

There are nearly 30-40 families in village Ahdi Khan Rajper living in huts

Students provided Rs. 10500 to the village so that the people there can prepare bed sheets, which will be sold in the market to generate revenue.

Mr.Munawar and his mother live in D . G. KHAN. Mr. Munawar has lost his one leg in an accident .

Student raised a fund of Rs. 8000/- for establishing a fruit Shop. Father of student’s friend, who deals in fruits, has given the poor fellow a fruit stock worth Rs. 12000/- on credit. Now Munawar is running the shop.

Moazan sahab who is living in Baldia town is molvi at a masjid near his home, but he has no proper source of income.

Mrs. Mushtri Begum, a resident of Orangi Town works at houses and cooks food. Her daughter, Reema, trained in stitching clothes needed a sewing machine so that she could support her family.

Students provided her daughter with a sewing machine and arranged some dowry for her daughter as well as some ration.

Mr Nazeer lives in Landhi, he has 8 kid. He is a flood victim living in a Govt school, but now they are being forced to leave. Students got place for 1 room by political support. Students also collected Rs. 22000/- for construction of another Room. The remaining cost of the room construction will be born by Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation.

Miss Shameem, a widow, lives at Qaiyum-a-bad with her daughter and son, she works as a maid in bungalow, her monthly income is Rs. 3000/- which is not at all enough for her expanses. Her daughter cannot support her because she is handicapped.

So we helped her in a way that we arranged a cabin of general products which can help the family earn their bread and butter.

Mrs. Erum, a widow women, living near Nagan Chowrangi, mother of two, has no source of income and dependent on elderly parents.

Students arranged her Rs. 18,700/- for setting up beauty parlor in her home and also admitted her in training centre for beautician course. She will now run this parlor along with her friend Mrs. Sahana who has previous experience of beauty salon.

Mrs. Zulfiqar has only 1 daughter which is 3 years old. She lives in Azeempura. Her husband is paralys by feet. He open packing ropes through which he earn 1000 per month. They live in 1 room house on rent 4000.

Since She is skilled also in stitching, therefore Students arranged a stitching machine worth Rs. 5200.

Mrs. Aslam is a widow. She lives in Green Town. She has a son. She is a herb doctor through which she earn 100 to 1000 Rs per day. She adopted her niece. She doesn’t have any regular source of income.

Students provided sewing machine for dowry to her niece who is expected to get married in March. The total cost of sewing machine is Rs. 5200/-.

Mr. Shareef who lives with her wife and two daughters didn’t have sufficient funds to repair his house which was in pretty bad condition. This caused security and privacy concerns for his family.

Mrs. Raees, mother of four children, had a business stitching and selling scarfs. Her cost of manufacturing was too high as she had to buy the inventory on credit. She needed financial leverage to purchase inventory on cash.

Students donated Rs. 16,430/- so that she could purchase inventory for her business.

Medical Treatment and Necessities of Life for Mr. Shoaib

Mr. Shoaib, 22, is jobless, lives in a rented house with his ill mother. Shoaib needed sustenance to survive for four months after which he had to shift to another city with her mother.

Students provided a donation of Rs. 20,000/- so that he could manage his expanses till he is in Karachi.

Mr. Zahoor, lives in Korangi, is heavily indebted due to a loan which he took to cure his illness (cancer). The treatment has rendered him incapable of his old job of embroidery, now he doesn’t have any regular source of income to feed his five family members.

Students arranged a Sweing Machine and provided cash, totaling to Rs. 10,000/-. The machine will be used by the one of the son’s of the poor lady, who is skilled in stitching cloths.

Mr. Irhad, who lives in new-Karachi with his has seven daughters and two sons, works in Karachi shipyard. His source of income isn’t sufficient to support all the expenses of his family including the treatment of one his son who was paralyzed in a bomb blast.

Students provided some items for dowry to his two daughters who are expected to get married in March. The total cost of items was Rs. 12,500/-.

Mr. Latif from Malir, father of two, works on daily wages, his present source of income was not sufficient to make his ends meet.

One of the daughter of Mrs Nasreen, a mother of 4, has a infection in leg, which required surgery. Mrs. Nasreen wh didn’t had a proper source of income couldn’t afford the treatment

Mr. Khalil, lives with his wife and their 3 children in Gulistan-e-Johar. His children did not get the opportunity to go to school and get education. Due to his wife’s illness he got himself indebted. To pay back the debt he sold his cart of fruits which was his only source of income

Students bought him a cart with fruits with Rs. 8000/- as he was already skilled in doing this kind of work.

Got Abu Bakar’s Broken Wan Repaired

Mr. Abu Bakar, father of three, was unable to walk properly, however he could drive. He purchased a wan on a loan, though it’s battery got expired due to some reason. Due to his financial condition he couldn’t got his battery repaired, hence his only source of income was nonoperational.

Students got his battery repaired with Rs. 3000/-, which enabled him to start his work again.

Setting up of an Industrial Stitching Unit of 5 Workers

Students have identified four needy girls named Zainab, Umm-e-Rabab, Aimon and Rukhsana, after training of a month they will be provided a space, machines, material and orders so that they can start earning their livelihood. Total Initial investment is Rs. 25,000. This unit is expected to start working on 21st May 11. Rashid’s mother is also a skilled stitcher who will be the fifth lady in the unit, on the other hand education of Rashid and his siblings is also been arranged by Anam and Ayesha. Job of a Gardner for Rashid’s Father, who is dumb, is also arranged at STEVTA.

Mr. Shahid, father of three, had a daughter suffering from epilepsy. The source of income had constrained the poor guy from providing her daughter proper medical treatment.

Students established a shop by the name of Fox computers with an investment of Rs. 30,000/-. This shop provided an employment to Mr. Ali Hasan who belongs to a deserving family.

The investment was recovered in 5 months time and after that the shop was handed over the employee.
