SARTS21-106 Concert: “Broader Than the Measure of the Mind”: An Evening of Sacred Music by Calvin Hamptom7:0 PM–9:0 PMCalvin Hampton (1938–1984) is among the most important contemporary composers of sacred music. A prodigious composer whose life was cut short by the AIDS virus, his compositions of choral, instrumental and electronic music magnify the language of Scripture and illuminate its texts in pro-vocative ways. A theologian in sound and musical poet without borders, his music challenges and inspires, inviting us to “break open the word” in fresh ways. This concert, featuring the Choir of Old South Church, together with soloists, instrumentalists, and electronic music, and directed by Harry Huff, Minister of Music at Old South Church, is sponsored by Old South Church and the Society for the Arts in Religious and Theological Studies (meeting in conjunction with the SBL). It is open to the public; a donation for the church’s mis-sion will be gladly received. Old South Church is located on Copley Square (www.oldsouth.org), a short walk from the Hyde Convention Center and adjacent to the “Copley Square T Station” on the Green Line. For more information, kindly call the church at: (617) 536-1970. The sanctuary is fully accessible.

Last Stop before AntarcticaThe Bible and Postcolonialism in Australia, Second Edition

Roland BoerLast Stop before Antarctica points to the vital role that the Bible played in colonization, using Australia as a specific example. Drawing upon colonial literature, including explorer journals, poetry, novels, and translations, the book creates a mutually enlightening dialogue between postcolonial literature and biblical texts on themes such as exodus and exile, translation, identity, and home.

This Abled BodyRethinking Disabilities in Biblical Studies

Hector Avalos, Sarah J. Melcher, and Jeremy Schipper, editorsThese essays explore the use of the conceptual category “disability” in biblical and Near Eastern texts and examine how conceptions of disability become a means of narrating, interpreting, and organizing human life. Exploring Ecological HermeneuticsNorman C. Habel and Peter Trudinger, editorsThis volume introduces ecological herme-neutics, reading the biblical text from the perspective of Earth. In these groundbreak-ing essays, sixteen scholars seek ways to identify with Earth as they read and retrieve the role or voice of Earth. This study enriches eco-theology with eco-exegesis, a radical and timely dialogue between ecology and hermeneutics.

Daughter Zion Talks Back to the ProphetsA Dialogic Theology of the Book of Lamentations

Carleen R. MandolfoThis book offers a new theological reading of the book of Lamentations by putting the fe-male voice of chapters 1–2 into dialogue with the divine voice of prophetic texts in which God represents the people Israel as his wife and indicts them/her for being unfaithful. In Lam 1–2 we hear the “wife” talk back, and see an entirely different picture of the conflict showcased through this marriage metaphor.

The Quest for the Historical IsraelDebating Archaeology and the History of Early Israel

Israel Finkelstein and Amihai MazarBrian B. Schmidt, editor This book brings together a currently emerging “centrist” paradigm as articulated by two leading figures in the fields of early Israelite archaeology and history. Although the authors advocate distinct views of early Israel’s history, they share the position that the material cultural data, the biblical tradi-tions, and the ancient Near Eastern written sources are all relevant to the historical quest for Iron Age Israel. The research results are featured in accessible, parallel syntheses of the historical reconstruction of early Israel that facilitate comparison and contrast of their respective interpretations.

Theme: Should We Be Teaching the Historical-Critical Method?

A panel and “fishbowl conversation” with Dale Martin about the issues he raises in his new book, The Pedagogy of the Bible (West-minster John Knox). Martin explores the ways that theological schools actually teach the historical-critical method and analyzes the pedagogical difficulties resulting from these methodological assumptions. He argues for a new approach to teaching the Bible, constructed within a context of critical hermeneutical theory, which would interpret scripture within the context of church history and church’s theology. The session will begin with a brief two-person panel presentation describing the significance of the book and raising key questions. Follow-ing this, the room will be reconfigured as a “fishbowl,” and Martin will be joined by five others for an open-ended discussion about the implications of the book for teaching. Audience members will then be invited to join in the discussion.Thomas Pearson, Wabash Center for
