Mrs Yaghjian receives the Minister’s & Secretary’s Award for Excellence

I grew up and went to school in South Carolina, America. I’ve been teaching science for 10 years, I was inspired to become a teacher when my children were in high school and I thought I could be a excellent science teacher.I hope to make my students curious about life, and help teach my students about taking care of the environment.A highlight in my career was receiving the Minister’s and Secretary’s Award for Excellence.

I went to school at Exeter Public School in Tasmania and then Moss Vale High School. I had excellent teachers who help me enjoy learning at school.I’ve been a teacher for 3558 days now, 3000 of those days at Dubbo College South Campus, but hey, whose counting??The staff and students at Dubbo South are very friendly and make my job very enjoyable. The best part of my job is electrocuting students with 10,000 volts of static electricity.

I went to school a Grafton State High. I was fortunate to obtain a scholarship for university, as the Government had a scheme for students in Maths and Science to become teachers. It was the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.I enjoy making a difference in my students learning, as well as excelling in my teaching and learning new things. My colleagues and students have made me feel welcome here since I started 3 years ago.

YEAR 9 & 10 NETBALLYear 9/10 Netball team came 6th in the state. After winning the Schools Cup local day and regional finals, the Year 9/10 netball team advanced to the Schools Cup State Final which was held at the Genea Netball Centre in Sydney Olympic Park on the 20th of September. From the outset, it was clear that the competition would be tough as only the top eight schools from around the state are invited to attend the event. The team played enthusiastically throughout the round coming away with two losses against Mackillop College, Port Macquarie (14-5) and Westfields Sports High School (24-12) and one win against Trinity Catholic College, Lismore (15-14). This led to a play off for 5th and 6th position and the team came up against Glen Innis High School. The game was very competi-tive for the entire 24 minutes, however Glen Innis were able to capitalise on a number of change overs from South, allowing them to forge ahead and finish with a 20-14 win. Best and Fairest, as voted by the players was Payton Harris, with noteworthy efforts also made by Ava Medley, Lucy Roberts and Paycee Cub-by. All players are to be commended on their performance and sportsmanship.

Photography and Digital Media Elective StudentsThe Photography and Digital Media elective students and a few others gave their time to tutor West Dubbo Primary students in editing as well as advice with developing their ideas for their images. It was a great pleasure to see the kindness and thoughtfulness in their interactions with the younger students. Mr Wellham, the 5/6 class teacher, commented that his students now had quality editing shortcuts and ideas to further enhance images they are preparing to exhibit. He also said that he was impressed that his students were completely engaged and interested in the activity for the entire time because of the efforts of the high school students and he was surprised and grateful. I am truly thankful to have had the assistance of the South Campus students to share their skills and effort.

THE highlight of the Festival on Fitzroy was hearing the overwhelming number of students and visitors expressing their enjoyment at the day. The combination of Character Dress-up on the same day as the Festival added to the good cheer. It was a pleasure to see Batman offering up ping-pong balls to small children, a spectacular mermaid hosting the Art compe-tition, Snow White and the seven Dwarves in the Wellbeing tent and a Willy

Wonka enticing students to dip their hands in a revolting lucky dip, it was like walking into a giant party. Live music and the enticing aroma of delicious fresh food filled the air, while the animals and balance beam compe-titions drew crowds. Our students decorated the stage area, managed the badge making stalls and performed for all. The SRC Character Day organisers worked exceptionally hard in developing concepts for

and organising stalls like the gross food tasting, pie in the face and balance beam pillow-fights. It was impressive to see their ef-forts being rewarded with enjoyment for the whole school community as well as for our visitors. The two biggest crowds were for the music and for the pie in the face which saw brave teachers raising money for “Write a Book in a Day.” Mrs Thompson, Mr Elborne-Binns and Mr Manion received their

gooey gifts with good humour, laughter and gleeful applause from the huge crowd of students. The other big drawcard was the music festival on the oval organised by the students and our music teachers treated crowds to hours of entertain-ment. Up close audiences enjoyed the efforts and energy of our students and teachers. The whole festival was entertained by the sound of the performances.
