Senior Preparatory Communiqué!

Dear Mums and Dads

I recently came across an interesting article in the 11th to 17th October 2013 Guardian

Weekly. George Monblot suggests in his article entitled, “Our children are just not wild

enough”, that children in the UK now spend very little time in outdoor education. The

main reason? Budget cuts. Children in the UK are now being overly confined to the

classroom. Outdoor education is a vital part of the schooling process. This is something, I believe, that we get right

here at Reddam House. For example, in the Grade Seven year alone, a pupil would have had the opportunity to go

on a Bonding Camp, a trip to Johannesburg, as well as a weekend away River Rafting. Our varied sports programme

contributes significantly too. This is what true education is all about. Giving every child every opportunity to experi-

ence life and learning in all of its various formats. “Getting wet and tired and filthy and cold, immersing yourself,

metaphorically and literally, in the natural world: surely by these means you discover more about yourself and the

world around you…” (G. Monblot)

(Please feel free to contact me should you wish to receive a copy of the article)

Academic matters:

By the time you read this newsletter, your child will have finished writing their examinations. Congratulations! Today

and early next week your child will receive their examination scripts to take home. Teachers will have gone through

the papers carefully with your child. We encourage you to also go through the papers with your child. This is an im-

portant time of consolidation and reflection. Be positive and constructive with any criticism. Don’t forget to give praise

Well done to all our pupils

for finishing the November

2013 Examinations. You are

a star!

National Science Olympiad:

Thirty-one Grade Seven pupils wrote the National Science Olympiad Examination during September. Seventeen

pupils received Certificates of Achievement. This is for a mark that is 60% and above. Special mention goes to

Jake Rabbets who came first at Reddam House ASB. Special mention goes to Daniel Coetzee and Richard Kam-

buyi who came joint second place. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Certificates will be handed out in

our final assembly on the 4th of December.

Summer School Workshops:

You will have received a notice explaining our exciting Summer School Programme to be held on the 27th of No-

vember. This is a new and innovative extra-curricular activity that our staff has designed in order to enrich and

stimulate our pupils. Divergent thinking and the validation of personal intuitive thought is all part of the education

process!

Get to know your teachers: Mr Andrew Thomas

I grew up in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape and went to school at Kingswood College before attending Rhodes

University. I enjoy travelling and the great outdoors. Since leaving school, I have lived in England, South Korea

and Taiwan and it was here where I found my passion for teaching.

SPOT OUR ART

Over the examination period the Grade 5 pupils played the games they made from natural materials for a Science and Technology/Art project. The pupils enjoyed the newness of some of the games presented, as well as the challenge of playing the games according to the rules on the rule cards. Some fun time after writing an examination.

Reddam Foundation Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour 2014

Page 9 SP Newsletter

"We urge all cyclists (novice and experienced!) to sign up for TEAM REDDAM that will be cycling the Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Race in 2014. The intention behind having you ride in the awesome Team Reddam colours is to raise awareness of the won-derful work that the Reddam Foundation does to provide bursaries for students who would otherwise not be able to afford a Reddam House education. All proceeds raised from this initiative go directly to the Foundation’s bursary pro-gramme. Please sign up soon … time for registering is running out fast!"
