Summer is officially here and that means many people are preparing for a holiday.

While summer is the most com-mon time for a break, retirees often have more flexibility.

“If you are senior and you want to travel, you’re better off going on the shoulder season, rather than the high season,” said Debbie Trenholm, owner/manager of World Odyssey Travel and Cruise in Mission.

“There’s less kids and it’s usually less expensive.”

While many people have to book their trips around Christmas vacation, spring break or during the summer, seniors have many more options.

“Go in September. Go in June. Go when the kids are still in school and the prices are a little bit more com-

petitive.Of course, many seniors still want

to enjoy some time in the sun and a summer cruise is often the answer.

At this time of year, the Alaska cruise is still the most popular travel destination for seniors. Trenholm said it’s because they don’t have to fly any-where, they just get someone to take them into Vancouver. Then they are on the ship and looked after.

“Because a lot of seniors don’t want to fly anymore,” she said.

Sometimes it’s for health reasons, but more often they just don’t want the hassle of the upgraded security, time change, and other travel chal-lenges.

“We are finding more and more seniors usually looking for options that they don’t have to get on a plane.”

Cruises are also popular because of the convenience.

“You don’t have to keep packing and unpacking.”

On coach tours, travelers often stay at different hotels every few days. That requires constantly loading up your suitcase and unpacking at the next destination which many seniors don’t want to do.

For those who don’t mind hopping from one hotel to another, Eastern coach tours are also popular as it allows seniors to visit the other side of Canada.

Hawaii is still high on the list as it is a relatively short flight and an English-speaking destination.

Seniors are also looking for shorter trips, especially if they are leaving the country.

INTRODUCTION: Henry is 72 years old and was born and lived in St. Louis, Missouri until  he was 17. His education includes a total of six years attending Universities in Miami and Iowa.  Although he had hoped to finish a PHD program, he was only able to do two years in Graduate School in Iowa.

Henry decided to leave the United States and in 1968  moved to Norway House, Manitoba where he taught grades 1 to 3 for approximately six months. He then moved to North Vancouver and worked in a credit union as a loans officer for three years but transferred to a bank and moved to Mission, shortly after he married his wife Barbara.

He worked for the bank for a year but because he volunteered in North Vancouver as a Telephone Crisis Line Counsellor and enjoyed it, he applied at Corrections and started to work there in 1974 until retirement in 2003.

VOLUNTEER: Henry belongs to a few choirs, often singing solo. He performs with the Joy Vox Choir, practicing once a week and performing at concerts and the Festival of Voice with the proceeds going to the food bank; the Valley Singers, practicing and going weekly to local care homes; and a new group called John’s Group over the last year performing at various functions.

KEEPING ACTIVE: Music has many health benefits. Henry started taking lessons in voice about four years ago, switched to piano about a year ago and now alternates between voice and piano.  He also goes to open mike at a local pub and their social gathering at the Abbotsford Flea Market once a week but also works in their garden and most often walks his dog at least once daily.

“For heights and depths no words can reach, music is the soul’s own speech.” ( Henry David Thoreau).

Mission Community Foundation

The Foundation is well known for its philanthropic efforts with regard to the student population of Mission. This year we will be giving out in excess of $50,000 to the graduating classes of Mission High schools as well as sup-porting dry grad. However, we are very aware of the needs of Seniors groups as well and the distribution committee gives out community grants 3 times in each year. The recipients include life-time learning, hospice and support for other worthwhile projects.

Many readers will be aware that we received a large bequest in the will of the late Marilyn Boswyk. This money, currently just over $1 million, has been dedicated to the building of a seniors centre in Mission, or alter-natively for the furtherance of senior’s

activities. After discussion and with the full agreement of the seniors advisory group, it has been decided that half of the money will be dedicated for con-struction costs and the interest gener-ated from the other half will be used ad infinitum to help defray the costs of ongoing maintenance. In this way Mar-ilyn’s bequest will continue to serve the interests of seniors long into the future.

We would like to encourage those of our readers to consider Mission Com-munity Foundation when they are making bequests in their will. Remem-ber that our administrative costs are minimal and the interest from your generosity will stay in this town forever to benefit its citizens in whatever way you choose.

feel comfortable being away from their home for too long anymore, so we are doing a lot of little short trips, to San Diego or Palm Springs,” said Trenholm.

That, of course, does not encom-pass every senior. Trenholm is quick to point out that many retirees are still booking flights to Paris, Italy or wherever. It depends on how active they want to be.

“A lot of our seniors are in unbe-lievable health now, so really, there is no problem, they travel like any-body else. You can’t just say, ‘because you’re 65, you can’t go wherever.’ It’s totally going to depend on their health and their frame of mind.”

The following are some travel tips.Insurance: Trenholm said all trav-

elers should have proper medical insurance if they plan on leaving the country.

“You can’t travel without that, just don’t do it.”

She also suggests people have can-cellation insurance, although some may be willing to take the risk of losing their initial investment, rather than pay more for insurance.

Prescriptions: Make sure you have an adequate amount of your pre-

scription drugs with you. Also, have a copy of your prescription from your doctor.

“In case you lose your prescriptions or they’re stolen or lost, you may have to replace them.”

Eyeglasses: Take a spare pair. Many vacations have been ruined because someone broke their glasses and had to spend two blurry weeks on holiday.

Accommodations: Trenholm advises that people look carefully at the hotels they book.

“A lot of hotels, especially in another country, don’t necessarily have eleva-tors and we assume that they would. So all of a sudden you are on the third floor and you can’t do the stairs.”

The same reasoning applies to wheelchair accessibility. Some hotels don’t have rooms, or have limited numbers of rooms designed to peo-ple with disabilities or movement issues. A travel agent should be able to ensure you are booked into a facil-ity to suit your personal needs.

Safety: Don’t take large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry with you on holidays.

“If you are taking some cash, split it up. Don’t have it all in one little purse.”

Seniors have more flexibility in their travel scheduleFROM 21

Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which areas close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”
