Spider-Man, Uncharted, and More:5 Key Sony Franchises for the Next Decade

Spider-Man

Spider-Man is Sony’s most valuable film franchise. Five films across two series have grossed nearly $4 billion in global box office receipts.

Spider-Man will make his debut in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War, coming in May 2016. From there, Disney and Sony will co-produce new films based on the webslinger, with the first expected to debut in 2017. Source: Marvel

Uncharted

As of June, sales of the Uncharted series had passed 21 million copies.Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End launches on PlayStation 4 in March 2016, and it will likely wind up among the best selling games on the platform.

Sony is also developing a movie based on the Uncharted series. The adaptation is set to hit screens in 2017.

Released in 2012, Skyfall went on to gross roughly $1.1 billion -- the highest ever for a James Bond film and the 12th highest gross in movie history.The next film hits U.S. theaters on November 6.

After Spectre, the rights for James Bond go up for bid. Sony has done a commendable job with its Bond films and could really use the license if it plans to bolster its film division.

First released on PlayStation 3 in 2013, The Last of Us stands as one of the most critically and commercially successful new gaming IPs in the last decade.A sequel has not been announced, but continuing the series on PlayStation 4 is a likely move from Sony.

Like Uncharted, The Last of Us is developed by Sony’s Naughty Dog studio and set for a big-budget film adaptation.

Sony’s all-female Ghostbusters is set to release in America on July 16, 2016, and the company’s consumer products division expects that the new take on the franchise will drive significant merchandise sales.

Sony has also expressed interest in building an expanded film universe around the Ghostbusters property, though it’s unclear if it’s moving ahead with the plan.

• In addition to the five franchises discussed in this presentation, Sony also has new installments in movie properties such as Men in Black and Jump Street in development, and video game series such as God of War to make use of.

• Even so, Sony’s stable of established entertainment franchises does not currently stand out as strong in comparison to the competition.

• Outside of Spider-Man and James Bond, Sony comes up short on established, big movie series.

• Retaining rights to the Bond property may be particularly important as video game movie adaptations, such as Uncharted and The Last of Us, have a less-than-stellar track record at the box office.

• On the video game front, Sony has some strong first-party franchises for the PlayStation 4, but Microsoft’s lineup for the Xbox One looks even stronger. Even so, Sony’s console will likely continue to sell in great numbers.
