We think THE OLD MARKET (or TOM for short) is the best place in Brighton & Hove to see a show. We aim to encourage the presentation and production of performance arts, by hand-picking shows (see TOM’S TAGS for our picks).
We often add new shows – keep an eye on THEOLDMARKET.COM and sign up to our newsletter to stay one-step ahead of the crowds.
TOM is owned and managed by two of the city’s most successful artists, the creators of international smash-hit show STOMP.

Hello,Welcome to SPRING 2016 at TOM, a season designed to get you back on your feet following the excesses of the holiday season.
Laugh away the doldrums with TOM favourites Simon Munnery (p4) and Tony Law (p5). Indulge in some silliness with everyone’s favourite comic book detective Dick Tracy (p10-11).
Gigs-wise, we’ve got songstress Gabby “If I can balance it on my head, I’ll rock it” Young (p7), future-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote (p20), and plenty more.
Our new mini-season Women’s Voices celebrates International Women’s Day over three Tuesdays in March with groundbreaking theatre, song and sound-art (p13-15).
Want to get the kids away from screens while still embracing the cutting-edge? They’ll love Digitopia (p17), where dancers use interactive technology to trigger visually stunning projections.
Of course, we couldn’t do all this without your support. Join the TOM’s Friends scheme and we’ll reward you with 15% off of selected shows all year round. Find out more at theoldmarket.com/tomsfriends.
We’ll see you soon, as you emerge into the light of Spring (and back down into our bar, hopefully).

Multi award-winning comedian Simon Munnery offers up a new stand-up show. As he returns once again to what he does, being himself for an hour. He will generally tell it like it is, was, and might be if we could but get our fingers out. All rise.
Think a wackier, quirkier version of Britain’s Got Talent meets The X Factor and you have Le Cluck Factor! Hosted and judged by local impresarios Tori Bond, Jonny Davies and Sue Tyhurst, expect an eclectic line-up of hopefuls, alongside some established favourites. All profits will go to CalAid.

It’s down to the square-jawed, hard-hitting, fast-shooting detective to solve the crime the only way he knows how... the crime solving way. Will Tracy save the day, get the girl and find out who’s behind the mayhem? Perhaps the truth is closer than he thinks....
Le Navet Bete’s Dick Tracy is a slapstick comedy influenced by the world-famous comic detective. Incorporating live music, audience interaction, lightning-quick character changes, and plenty of over-the-top silliness.
Having wowed audiences across the globe with their tightly-honed style of comedy, the award-winning Le Navet Bete team up once again with comedy director John Nicholson (Peepolykus). Dick Tracy promises to have the bad guys in handcuffs and audiences of all ages in stitches.

“Wickedly talented” Time out
Mmm Hmmm is a playful, poignant musical journey shaped by three exceptional female voices jumping between sound worlds and lyrical styles. Using intricate vocal techniques and rich harmony, Mmm Hmmm holds a magnifying glass up to snapshots of everyday life. One moment a fragile apology, the next a perilous trip to the First Great Western buffet car…Verity Standen’s original a cappella songs evoke the awkward, heartrending and hilarious moments that characterise what it means to be human.

Georgie feels uncomfortable about servants, but she could really do with the help. Kitty’s been very, very bad. And don’t mention Maria, she’s just here to clean up. Inspired by the old names for the full moons, from Hunter’s Moon to Harvest Moon, these 13 interwoven vignettes are female voices from across time and place, telling bittersweet universal stories of lifelong secrets, sex, regret, desire, hope. From the ‘burbs of Johannesburg to Medieval Yorkshire, these are eloquent, darkly funny portraits which capture the diversity – and commonality – of the female experience. Winner, Argus Angel Award for Artistic Excellence, Brighton Fringe 2015.

Following a critically acclaimed season at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Fringe First Award winning playwright Henry Naylor brings Echoes to Brighton. In it, he finds surprising similarities between the Islamist adventurers of today, and early Victorian pioneers.
Presented as a pair of intercut monologues, Echoes tells the stories of two women, born 175 years apart.
One is a student jihadi from London - the other a Victorian member of the Fishing Fleet (the women who travelled to India to be brides of those men who were setting up the Empire).
Both are idealists: intelligent adventurers, with strong religious beliefs. Both travel to the East with a mission to impose a system of government upon an unwilling people. The Victorian would play a leading role in the establishment of the Empire; the jihadi, a caliphate…
Echoes is a provocative and brutal tale of colonialism, and the rhyme of history. Echoes features superb performances by Felicity Houlbrooke and Filipa Braganca, and the production won the prestigious Edinburgh Spirit of the Fringe Award 2015. Subsequently, the show is set to go on an extensive tour, playing not only the UK, but also Australia, Czechoslovakia and Finland.
Singer-songwriter Such Small Hands will be performing a set following Echoes and an interval.
