The month of March is designated “Brain Injury Awareness Month.” I wanted to write about head injury because its effects are so widespread. Injuries can occur whether it’s an athlete on the field, a soldier in the military or a driver or passenger involved in an automobile accident. Hazards occur in every walk of life: a senior citizen who merely walks out of their home to pick up a morning newspaper in the driveway and slips on an icy surface, falls and hits their head. We are all vulnerable to a potential brain injury. St. Johnland opened its Traumatic Brian Injury Unit in 1995 and has been serving these patients ever since. During this time we have provided care for countless
individuals and many have returned home to enjoy a productive future. We recently hosted an informative lecture by the co-medical director of our Unit, Dr. Max Rudansky. Sixty patients, family members and St. Johnland staff were reminded about the healing process and how important a program like ours is to a successful recovery.

National Skilled Nursing Care Week
LIVE SOULFULLY May 12 - 18, 2019
National Skilled Nursing Care Week is a nationwide
celebration that recognizes residents and patients in long
term and post-acute care settings, and the dedicated staff
members who care for them. The theme for this year is “Live Soulfully” and will
celebrate skilled nursing centers, and their residents and staff, by showcasing how
they achieve happy minds and healthy souls.
During NSNC Week, we will be having several resident activities that will display
how they “Live Soulfully”. Events will include soul music, a spa day, yoga,
a resident art show, a special birthday party for centenarians, and a spring fashion
show featuring residents and staff.
National Volunteer Week April 7- 13
National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent and support to causes they care about in their community. St. Johnland will be hosting a luncheon in honor of our volunteers to highlight and show appreciation for the difference they make every day for our residents. St. Johnland has an active volunteer program with people of all ages performing many valuable tasks with residents including leading special programs and sharing a range of creative talents and life experiences. For more information on being a volunteer at St. Johnland, call Carolyn O’Brien, Director of Recreation Therapy, at 631-663-2465 ([email protected]). We are most grateful for the time, energy and dedication provided by our volunteers!

Residents, families, and staff voted for categories like Best Laugh, Nicest Eyes, Best Sense of Humor, Best Singer and Most Likely to Brighten Your Day. Winners in each category walked the red carpet to receive their award and then had their pictures taken by the paparazzi. Congratulations to all our award winners including Susan Horn for winning the “Most Helpful” award, Dorothy Gangemi for being
voted “Best Personality”, and Pat McByrne for receiving “Best Hair” honors. Many thanks to Carolyn O’Brien for emceeing the event and to her entire staff for orchestrating this touch-ing and humorous event!
Celebrating Chinese New Year The Residents and Staff celebrated Chinese New Year (the Year of the Pig) on February 8th. A raffle was held and everyone was a winner! There were lots of beautiful baskets and splendid door prizes as well. Each resident was thrilled to hear their name called and to receive their prize. In Chinese culture, pigs are symbols of wealth and good fortune, and the residents who attended the Chinese New Year celebration were exceedingly glad for their good fortune and the lovely prizes they won!
