new presidency unfolds.
In this column, we’re continuing our walk through the intro-
duction of the new Order of Celebrating Matrimony (OCM).
So far, we’ve reviewed the sections on theology and on du-
ties and ministries. This time, we’ll go over Section III: The
Celebration of Matrimony.
Paragraphs 28-32 talk about how important it is to prepare
well to celebrate a marriage. In particular, the engaged cou-
ple should be invited to be part of choosing the readings,
prayers, and music to be used (#29). The OCM is especially
insistent that the music chosen “should be appropriate and
should express the faith of the Church” (#30). While “the
festive character of the celebration of Marriage should be
suitably expressed” in the way the church is decorated, cou-
ples need to keep “the special nature” of penitential days
and seasons, such as Lent, in mind (#31-32). There are two
days on which marriages may not take place: Good Friday
and Holy Saturday.
What is most interesting about this first part of Section III is
paragraph 28. There, the Church reminds us that the cele-
bration of marriage has a “communitarian character” – it
involves not just the couple and even their family and
friends, but is a parish celebration. Therefore, the OCM talks
about the celebration of several marriages at the same litur-
gy and of celebrating the Sacrament at the parish’s Sunday
Mass. While not the way we are used to doing things, these
suggestions reveal a very important part of our theology of
sacraments in general and of matrimony in particular: noth-
ing in the church is ever individualistic. Sacraments are
communal.
Paragraphs 33-38 address the question of which rite is to
be used. The OCM offers three ways to celebrate matrimony:
within Mass, without Mass, and between a Catholic and one
who is not baptized.
If a marriage is between two Catholics, it should take place
at Mass (Chapter I; see #33). Typically, the Ritual Mass
would be used; there would be specific prayers and read-
ings that deal with marriage. However, on certain days of
the year, ritual Masses cannot be used; on those days, the
Mass of the Day (with its prayers and readings) is celebrated
(#34). In certain cases, the pastor may suggest to the cou-
ple that celebrating matrimony without Mass is a better op-
tion; for example, if most of the family is not Catholic.
If a marriage is between a Catholic and a Christian from
another tradition, then the rite for celebrating Matrimony
without Mass (Chapter II) should be used (#36). For serious
reasons, the Bishop can allow such weddings to take place
at Mass; for example, if having a wedding without Mass
would be a problem for the Catholic family. There is a spe-
cial rite (Chapter III) to be used when a Catholic marries a
catechumen or someone else who is not baptized, or if 2
catechumens get married (#36). While real and valid mar-
riages, these are not sacramental (it takes two baptized
persons to make a marriage a sacrament). In these cases,
Mass is never celebrated. (cont.)
New Marriage Rite Part 4 by Deacon Frank Agnoli
During the week All Saints will celebrate nation-al Catholic Schools Week along with Catholic schools across the country. Throughout the week students will participate in activities including a door decorating con-test, breakfast and books, themed attire days, a dodgeball tournament for charity, Mass at Assumption High School, all-school bingo, a student and staff talent show (Tuesday at 1:45 p.m.) and a family breakfast to be held Friday morning prior to the start of school. In the Davenport diocese, All Saints is a unique school due to having students from several parishes. We love the community that this allows All Saints to have and we ap-preciate all of the different types of support we receive from each parish. Thanks to the combined efforts of all of our parishes, All Saints continues to be a wonderful place for students to grow and learn.
Finally, the Church reminds us that we are to be especially
welcoming of and attentive to “those, whether Catholics or
non-Catholics, who never or rarely take part in the celebra-
tion of Marriage or the Eucharist” (#37) – this applies espe-
cially to the spouses themselves. So, as parishes and as indi-
vidual ministers, out first task is to welcome the couple and
their family and friends as we would welcome Christ himself.

We have now taken 3 boxes of winter coats,
hats, and gloves to St. Marys. Many of the
gloves and hats were newly purchased items.
What a wonderful outpouring of your love for our
fellow man. We will end our collecting for St.
Marys Jan 29th, but please remember we have
an ongoing collection for all types and sizes of
clothing in St. Clements throughout the year.
Do you have a talent you could share?
Are you a dancer, a magician, a juggler? Are you a good read-
er? Would you consider being part of our program for Mardi
Gras? Please give some prayerful thought to helping with the
Mardi Gras night's entertainment. Let's see how many parish-
ioners we can highlight on Fat Tuesday, Feb. 28.
