Introduction Letter From our New Coordinator of Faith Formation: Elena Marquez

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

It gives me such joy to come on board with the community of St. Andrew the Apostle. As a recent graduate of Franciscan University with a double major in Theology and Catechetics, I hope to share the joy of working alongside all families and parishioners as the new Coordinator of Faith Formation.

Having the opportunity to be part of the St. Andrew family since I was Baptized, I am excited to give back to the place that began my faith. As I begin my new job and stage in life I am blessed to say that I can share it with the diverse community that is seeking to build a faith rooted in Christ. I am a believer of truth, beauty and goodness and the ways it can transform our lives to a deeper relationship with God.

I personally enjoy laughter, a good cup of coffee and a trip that can create memories.

Feel free to stop by the Faith Formation Office and say hello!

Elena Marquez, Coordinator of Faith Formation

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

Faith is freely passed on from generation to generation, from par-ents to children with the guidance and direction of our bishops, priests, deacons, and lay ministers. With joy I announce the new Coordinator of Faith Formation for our parish family of St. Andrew the Apostle, Elena Marquez. She shares below a bit of her own faith journey, as she herself was formed here at St. Andrew’s, and she comes back from her studies with enthusiasm to hand on the faith she herself has received from her parents and our parish family! Please welcome her as we work together to share and live the faith we have received! As we remember Father’s Day today, a beautiful, traditional hymn sprang up in my heart — Faith of our Fathers — appropriate for fathers and also for handing on our faith. Written by Fr. Frederick William Fa-ber in 1849 and considered his best-known work, this hymn commemorated the memory of the Catholic mar-tyrs from the time of the establishment of the Church of England by Henry VIII. Fr. Faber (1814 – 1863) was a noted English hymn writer and theologian, who converted from Anglicanism to the Catholic priesthood. It is also appropriate as we begin today our Fortnight for Freedom. Below are two of the beautiful verses of this song; may they inspire us today as we continue to seek the religious liberty to freely hand on and live our beautiful Catholic faith!

Faith of our fathers, we will strive To win all nations unto thee; And through the truth that comes from God Mankind shall then indeed be free. Faith of our fathers! holy faith! We will be true to thee till death!

Faith of our fathers, we will love Both friend and foe in all our strife, And preach thee, too, as love knows how By kindly words and virtuous life. Faith of our fathers! holy faith! We will be true to thee till death!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Święty Józefie, przybrany ojcze Zbawiciela, któryś wiernie wypełnił wolę Stwórcy i Zbawiciela człowieka, od którego bierze początek wszelkie ojcostwo na niebie i na ziemi, naucz mnie spoglądać Twoimi oczami na dar rodzicielskiego powołania

i mego miejsca w rodzinie, abym zawsze z radością przyjmował poczęte życie, jako szczególny dar Ojca Przedwiecznego. Dopomóż mi utrzymać, wychować i uformować moje dzieci według wzoru i przykładu Syna Bożego. Naucz mnie umiejętności utrzymywania w domu rodzinnym klimatu pokoju, pobożności, zaufania, jedności i miłości, którym Ty promieniowałeś przy Niepokalanej Matce w nazaretańskim domu. Ozdobo życia rodzinnego, otocz moją rodzinę swą przemożną opieką, aby była odzwierciedleniem Najświętszej Rodziny i przynosiła chwałę Bogu, oraz pożytek innym ludziom. Amen.

Intención de misa Para todos los Padres, Presentes y Ausentes

Feliz Dia De Los Padres.

Decimosegundo Domingo del

Tiempo Ordinario

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

When you are thinking about traditions in the Church, 1563 is a “watershed” year. The Council of Trent began a reform of the liturgy that put an end to old practices and set many of our present practices in place. For the first time, engaged people were absolutely required to appear before their parish priest, and to exchange consent in his presence along with two witnesses. To this day, Catholics are obliged to this form, namely: to marry another Catholic in the presence of a priest (or deacon) and two witnesses, unless dispensed from the law. The Council really didn’t forbid customs and ceremonies that added life to the celebration, but the mood of the times was dark and somewhat austere. Practices like the blessing of the marriage bed or using a canopy for the nuptial blessing started to fade away, as did the custom of bringing the presents for the couple to the church and the addition of fiddlers and jugglers to the procession. The Council of Trent tried to preserve local customs, but the long‑term effect was to standardize celebrations everywhere in the world.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED: Mary Blake-Kenny

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital minis-try team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, Wednesday evening 5:30-7:00pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.
