Rally Day celebrates the start of our fall discipleship program for children, youth and adults, as together we discover anew what it means that Jesus — the Word of God — is alive and active in the world, and in our lives, today. (Hebrews 4:12)

Next Sunday, Sept. 16, children will return to their Godly Play classrooms, and our middle school youth will resume Bible study. Adults and high school youth are invited to gather in the Sanctuary on Sundays in September to hear from a series of special guests, before embarking upon a study of spiritual gifts, which will be facilitated by Fr. Shane Tucker beginning on Oct. 7.

But today we have pancakes! Chris Cakes, the “flying flapjacks” folks, are back again this year, so grab your plates and get ready for the great pancake toss. A number of our ministry leaders will be out and about during breakfast today to share information and offer opportunities to serve Christ and his Church, and our community.

What to expect next weekChildren Our Young Saints in pre-school through 5th Grade will once again experience sacred stories, with lessons on the sacraments and liturgy woven throughout the school year, in Godly Play. A Montessori-based approach to religious education, Godly Play features Bible stories, lessons about the liturgy of the Church, and the parables of Jesus, all told using multi-sensory materials. A period of wondering together about the day’s lesson follows, and each child is then invited to reflect individually on the story through “Godly Play” — working with the lesson materials, an art response, or another activity.

This year, our children will explore some of the New Testament stories of Jesus’ relationship with the people he encountered during his earthly ministry. And they’ll come to know more deeply how those stories are their stories, too; that Jesus is alive today, and desires to be in

relationship with them, just as he was with those who walked with him 2,000 years ago.

Middle School YouthOur Middle School students will focus on some core issues of faith, including the Bible as the inspired word of God, the historic creeds of the Church and how they define what we believe, and what it means to follow Jesus, and live in him as he lives in us.

Sunday Forum: Joel Penton next Sunday The Sunday forum will kick off with a visit by Joel Penton of Stand for Truth Ministries, which is reaching thousands of students in public schools across the country with the message of the Gospel.

A graduate of The Ohio State University, Joel was a member of three Big Ten championship football teams and the 2001 National Championship team, a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, and recipient of the prestigious Wuerffel Trophy, also known as the “Humanitarian Heisman.” The Trophy is a national award that recognizes the one college football player in the entire country who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

After graduating from OSU, Joel turned down an opportunity to play in the NFL to begin a career in full-time motivational speaking. Joel’s positive message to students is both relevant and impactful, combines humor and sincerity, and uses real-life examples of the rewards that result from making right choices.

Joel follows up his character-based messages at school assemblies with an evening concert, where he and his Stand for Truth team have the opportunity to share the Gospel.

Please join us next Sunday as we once again welcome Joel, his wife

Rally Day marks start of fall discipleship

Bethany, and their children to St. Andrew’s. Joel will be introduced at the 9 a.m. service, share about Stand for Truth between services, and join us for worship at 11:15 a.m.

On Sept. 23, Julie Baldwin will share about her experiences in El Salvador, where she served this past summer on her second mission trip. On Sept. 30, our teachers/storytellers, with the Young Saints of our parish, will bring the experience of a Godly Play lesson into the Sunday Forum, as we share together in the wonder of God’s movement in our lives through a story from Scripture.

Children’s Chapel resumes next SundayChildren’s Chapel resumes during the 9 a.m. service next Sunday. Children accompany their parents to church, gather after the reading of the Gospel for Chapel, and return at “The Peace.”

Come connect with God, connect with his story, and connect with one another as we celebrate the living Christ through worship, discipleship, fellowship, and service.

Looking for the Daily Lectionary, next week’s Sunday Lectionary, and the Prayers for the Church? If so, they’re available in a leaflet at the Information Desk today! The lectionaries are also available at standrewspolaris.org.

Food, volunteers still needed for Common Ground next SaturdaySt. Andrew’s will serve at the Common Ground Free Store in Delaware next Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9: 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. We need both volunteers and food providers. If you don’t want to cook, monetary donations are great, as we will cook or shop for you. A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex; please take a look!

Also, please be aware that the Free Store will not be accepting winter items until the middle of October. We will let you know if this changes with a cooler fall, but for now please set your cold-weather donations aside until then.

For more information about Common Ground, please contact Diane Bobay at 614-846-6921 or [email protected], or Marty Scott at 614-284-0182 or [email protected].

Men of St. Andrew’s: ‘BootCamp’ is just ahead!Have you ever felt like there must be more to life than this? You may have been a follower of Jesus for a few years, or for most of your life, but may be wondering if God might be bigger than you’ve known him to be thus far. You may have also questioned at times if he has more for you, as you walk and work with him, than you’ve experienced to date. Or you may have asked God to help you be the husband, the father, the son, brother or friend that he created you to be, but lacked the vision and encouragement to move in that direction. Wherever you find yourself … you’re in good company with a band of brothers who are on that same journey.

This Nov. 8-11 men from our parish, along with some from other churches, will gather at Eagles Wings Lodge in southern Ohio’s Hocking Hills. We’ll have ample opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors with a lake, hiking trails, a shooting range, ping pong table and hot tub … but there’s so much more in store. “Boot Camp BASIC” is a weekend designed to help men live more fully alive in Christ. The content for the weekend is based on Dr. John Eldredge’s popular book, “Wild at Heart.” Eldredge and his wife Staci lead an organization called Ransomed Heart through which they write, speak and facilitate events such as this retreat all over the world.

If you’re interested and would like more information, or if you’d like to sign up, please get in touch with Fr. Shane Tucker at [email protected] or 740-548-5112, ext. 4. There are about five spaces left on a first come-first served basis. Friends are welcome, as well. The cost, including accommodation and food, is $265 before Oct. 1. Scholarships are available. Join us for what promises to be an epic experience and a milestone in our journey of faith as sons of our Father.

Bell Choir seeks new ringersThe St Andrew’s Handbell Choir is in desperate need of more ringers. Having ended last season with less than the ideal number of ringers to adequately share their talents, and with another member leaving the choir this season, the handbell choir is in jeopardy of folding.

If you like the sound of the handbells, have a rudimentary ability to read music, a good sense of rhythm, and can commit to attend rehearsals on a weekly basis (understanding that illnesses and vacations do happen) then we need you!

Christine Brill will be available between the services today- to answer any questions, demonstrate ringing techniques, and share what bell music looks like for anyone with an interest. Practices will be in the Sanctuary on Thursday evenings from 6:15-7:25 p.m. Beginning ringers will start practices in mid-September while the full handbell choir will begin practices on Oct. 18.

Prayer, support soughtfor Via de Cristo eventVia de Cristo of Ohio, a three-day renewal experience for Christians who desire to grow in their understanding of God’s great love and grace, has a special retreat coming up Oct. 1-4 specifically for Christian clergy and their spouses. Currently, we have two St. Andrew’s members working on the team that makes the retreat happen — Dan Brill will be providing the music for the event, and Christine Brill will be a table leader and share a message with the participants.

As a laity-led volunteer movement that inspires, challenges, and equips local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, and communities, the Brills are asking for your support in these ways:

Prayer! This is the most important aspect of the Via de Cristo experience. A sign-up sheet at the Information Desk offers a select number of 30-minute time slots during the 72-hour retreat. If you can commit to pray for the event and those attending, please sign up for a slot (couples can sign up together or separately). Please include your name and email address so that Christine can send you more information.

Donations! There is no charge for those who attend the weekend for the first time, and Via de Cristo of Ohio relies solely on donations from team members and the greater Christian community to cover expenses for food and facility rental. It costs about $5,000 to put on an event, and each team member is asked to raise about $200 to help defray that cost. If you are able to donate any amount, checks may be made out to Via de Cristo of Ohio and either given to Dan or Christine Brill, or placed in the offering plate marked for VdC-OH (all donations are tax deductible).

For more information about Via de Cristo of Ohio, contact Dan and Christine Brill, 614-899-7429 or [email protected]; Carlo Cherubini, 614-327-2317 or [email protected]; or Fr. Wil Verhoff, 740-602-8810 or [email protected].
