SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 22:15-21
In our Gospel passage today Jesus tells us to render to
Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the
things of God’s. Without taking a political position,
Jesus reminds us that legitimate authority does have
some control over our lives. In doing so He
simultaneously asserts God’s ultimate authority over us.
God is the God of the whole of creation. Everything
and everyone is subject to Him and therefore has
extreme value to Him. Sadly at times we forget how
valuable we and others are to God. The fast pace of our
materialistic society can make us forget not only who
we are, but more importantly “whose” we are. When
Jesus tells us, “to give to God that which is God’s,” He
reminds us that ultimately our true value comes only
from God. We don’t really own anything we have, even
our own lives. We are the sacred place in which God
chooses to come to live in a deep and mysterious way.
His indwelling makes us a sanctuary from which He
also wishes to reach out and touch our weary world to
bring it healing and love.

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 22, 2017
CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala, Foundress (1878-
1963)
Saint Maria Gaudalupe Garcia Zavala was born in 1878
in Zapopan, Mexico. Her father, a religious store
merchant, had his shop across the street from the Basilica
of Our Lady of Zapopan. Maria frequented the basilica
often growing up. Planning to marry in 1901, Maria
suddenly broke off her engagement because she felt a
strong calling to religious life to which she was unable to
resist. Maria described her call to the religious life as a
“sudden change of heart” that she knew she had to
follow. Believing that she was called to give assistance
to the poor and sick, Maria and her spiritual director the
future Blessed, Cipriano Inguez Martin del Campo, both
co-founded a new religious order called the Handmaids
of Saint Margaret Mary of the Poor. Maria worked as a
nurse and regardless of the poorness and the lack of
material goods of the patients she was compassionate
and caring towards the needs of the ill. She was named
the Superior General of the new order in 1906.
In times of dire need she asked her spiritual
director for permission to go begging in the streets in
order to collect funds needed for the hospital. Maria did
this with her fellow religious and she would seek
offerings until the needs of the hospital and patients were
met and would ask for no more than was needed. The
Mexican Revolution started in 1911 and its effects lasted
up until 1936 during which the political-religious
situation in Mexico became tense and in which the faith
underwent severe persecution. Maria put her own life at
risk and hid the priests and the Archbishop of
Guadalajara in her hospital. She showed compassion to
her “enemies” as well, offering care to the soldiers who
lived in the neighborhood of the hospital. In time, they
came to trust and respect her known by them as “Mother
Lupita.”
Saint Maria Guadalupe Garcia Zavala began to
suffer from a severe illness in 1961 and she died from
this illness on 24 June 1963 at the age of 85 in
Guadalajara. To today her Handmaids staff hospitals in
Mexico, Peru, Italy, Iceland, and Greece, attentive to
Maria’s words: “Be poor with the poor.” Her feast day is
June 24th.

ALL SOULS DAY
REMEMBRANCE BOOK Let us join together as a parish and remember those family members and friends who have touched our lives deeply and have now gone home to
God by signing their names in our parish’s Book of Life. The book is found in the lobby of the Church. These names and all the Faithful Departed will be remembered in a special way during the coming month of November. All Souls Day Remembrance envelopes are in your envelope packets for your use to remember your deceased family and friends. Additional envelopes for those who contribute on line are available on the parish bookrack. Six additional Masses are scheduled during the year where they will be remembered. Charity obligates us to pray for the souls of the faithful departed just as we would wish to be prayed for. It is still a Catholic practice to have Masses said during the year for those who have died.
BLOOD DRIVE St. Anthony Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a blood drive on Sunday, October 29 from 9:00am to 1:30pm. The LifeShare blood mobile will be parked in front of the school during the event. Knights of Columbus members will be in the church lobby to register donors after all masses this weekend. During the past year we earned $1000 that was used for the PSR program. With your help we can make this another successful drive. Remember, it’s about life!
CAN WE HELP? The St. Anthony's Giving Tree is a parish program which provides Christmas gifts to families who are experiencing financial difficulties. If you, or a parish family that you know of are in need of assistance this year, please contact Joyce at the par ish rectory (440) 842-2666 by November 2, 2017. All information is kept strictly confidential.

EVANGELIZATION TIP It is important to pray for the dead. Invite family and friends to go to Mass on All Souls Day (November 2). At this Mass in particular, we pray for all the souls in Purgatory, which could include our past relatives and friends.
MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS
Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. This section will offer a question to begin your conversation with God. Question: In the Gospel, St. Paul said, “For our
gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in
power and in the Holy Spirit and with much
conviction.” St. Paul firmly believes his message. Do
I believe? What part of my life needs stronger faith?
The 2nd Annual Cougar Pride 5K Run/1 Mile Walk has been officially scheduled for Saturday, June 9, 2018. At this time, we have opened our 2018 Cougar Pride 5K Sponsor Drive! If your
family or company is interested in becoming a Race Sponsor, please go to the St. Anthony of Padua School website: www.stanthonyofpaduaschool.org/2018-
sponsorship-information or contact us at [email protected]. More race information will be announced as it becomes available.
SEMINARIAN OF THE WEEK
Let’s promote vocations by praying for our diocesan seminarians.
Please pray for Daniel Samide.
LADIES GUILD FUND RAISER The Ladies Guild will be offering the 2018 “Our Town and All Around” dining directories through the weekend of Nov. 11/12 with the cost remaining $28.00 per book. The ladies will be available before and after most masses for you to purchase these coupon books and to answer any questions you may have.
Thanksgiving is still a way off. While we reflect on God’s blessings at Thanksgiving, we need to remember daily those who are less fortunate. The Food
Ministry invites you to participate on an ongoing basis in our attempt to feed those who are in need of assistance. Our most urgent need at this time is for: applesauce, canned fruit and tuna. Thank you for remembering those we serve.
CONFIRMATION STUDENTS AND PARENTS Today our young people who are preparing for Confirmation will be reflecting on “The Eucharist.” Jesus attracted many followers during His life on earth. People crowded around Him when He was walking through the streets. During mealtime, they crowded around him. Twice in His life, His followers fled from him. His followers fled when Jesus spoke to the people about the Eucharist. Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life…..Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. “ (John 6:48, 53) We read further in the Gospel: “When many of his disciples heard this, they said, “This is a difficult teaching; who can accept it? After this, many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed him.” (John 6:66) The question we need to ask ourselves is will we flee from Jesus or remain by his side? The Eucharist is the core of our faith. Please pray for our Confirmation students, that they discover God’s transforming power when we partake in the Body and Blood of Jesus.
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Be mindful of what the children are watching (whether on television or on the internet). It may send the wrong message about family, marriage, life, and God.

CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Clergy: Clergy is the name given to all ordained deacons, priests, and bishops in the Roman Catholic Church. A member of the clergy is called a cleric. At St. Anthony of Padua, Fr. Dale, Fr. Peter, and Deacon Jerry are all members of the clergy.
HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW…
Did you know that the weekday readings are divided into two cycles? The cycles are 1 and 2. We are presently reading the readings from Cycle 1. Starting with Advent, we begin Cycle 2.
WEEKLY MASS REMINDER
The Mystery of Faith that we profess is the saving action of Jesus - his Suffering, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension into Heaven. During the Eucharistic Prayer and the priest says The Mystery of Faith, profess this saving event with gratitude and awe.
NEED HELP
We are in need of Classroom aides to help with the
preschool program. This is a perfect opportunity
for High School students that need service hours. If interested in helping with this ministry, please call Randy Harris at 440-842-2666 or email at [email protected].
HOW IS CHRIST PRESENT IN
THE EUCHARIST? Jesus Christ is present in the Eucharist in a unique and incomparable way. He is present in a true, real and substantial way, with His Body and His Blood, with His Soul and His Divinity. In the Eucharist, therefore, there is present in a sacramental way, that is, under the Eucharistic species of bread and wine, Christ whole and entire, God and Man. (Compendium, Catechism of the
Catholic Church, 282)
Research shows that Catholics who believe that
Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist do not leave
the Catholic Church to join other churches
