For the third year in arow, Christmastime pro-vides the occasion for a
joint ecumenical ceremonythat will take place at theCatholic Church in Lorient,Sunday, December 17, at6:30pm. The event marks theharmony between the island’stwo major faiths, Anglican andCatholic. As they did last year,the island’s two choirs willjoin forces and performtogether as part of this specialservice that celebrates “UnityIn Diversity.” Their songs, inboth French and English, willaccompany prayers and read-ings by Catholic priest SylvèreNuma and the Anglican rev-erend Charles Vere Nicoll, the
leaders of the two religiouscommunities. At the piano willbe Charles Darden, musicdirector for the AnglicanChurch and the Chorale deBons Choeurs, while Ghis-laine Gumbs, director of theCatholic choir, will serve asmusic director for the evening.The service will conclude witha message of peace and unitythat was written in collabora-tion by the two religious lead-ers and which will be read inFrench by Father Numa andechoed in English by Rev-erend Vere Nicoll. Municipal officialshave decided toacquire a glass-
crushing machine to dealwith glass collected on theisland. They also decidedto improve the paths pro-viding public access to theisland’s beaches. Thesedecisions represent newbudget items.
Various items were on theagenda at the municipalcouncil meeting last Fridaynight. As usual, numerousresidents who can askquestions or make com-ments under the banner of“participatory democracy”attended the meeting. The council met for almosthours in order to discussthe 20 items on the agenda.A supplemental budget ofslightly more than two mil-lion euros for 2006 wasunanimously approved byall present. This allows anincrease to the initialmunicipal budget of morethan 37 millions euros,which was voted on lastMarch 29. In terms of oper-ating expenses, an addi-tional 400,000 euros willbe dedicated to sanitationissues, and 100,000 will gotoward the recruitment ofnew personnel. Under thetitle of investment, a com-munity aid grant of100,000 euros expectedfrom the Regional Councilwill be used to enhance thepublic/sports area in Ansedes Cailles. The municipal-ity will also acquire aglass-crushing machine for75,000 euros so that theglass collected for recy-cling can be crushed direct-
ly on the island. A sum of65,000 euros was allottedfor the improvement ofaccess paths to the beaches.“This is a necessity as cer-tain paths, such as the onethat leads to Colombier,become difficult to use dueto erosion from rain water,”explained mayor BrunoMagras. “How will the mainte-nance of these paths bedecided and is there a listof such paths?” askedMaxime Desouches, whorepresents the oppositionto the mayor’s politicalposition. “Certain pathsare private, but those I amtalking about are recog-nizes as public access andare not contested,”answered the mayor, whocontinued by nothing thatFort Karl, located near theHospital de Bruyn in Gus-tavia, has been acquired bythe Littoral Conservancy.This public agency, whichis responsible for the pro-tection of nature andcoastlines, will make astudy of the condition ofthe fort, then turn its man-
agement over to themunicipality. Finally, theisland’s two privateschools will benefit fromdonations: 25,329 eurosfor Ecole Sainte Marie and30,976 euros for EcoleSaint Joseph.
Fort Karl Now A Protected Site The historicFort Karl sitein Gustaviabelongs to theFrench Minis-try of Defense.Numerous pri-vate developershave made pro-posals to themunicipalitywith an eyetoward buildingthere. In 2002,in order to gua-rantee definitiveprotection of thesite, the munici-pal governmentrequested that the fort be placed under the control ofthe Littoral Conservancy. On December 7, 2006, a delegation from this publicagency, led by its assistant director, Bernard Gérard,who was accompanied by Marc Duncombe, their over-seas representative, came to Saint Barth to announcethe good news: On December 3, at the Corderie Royalein Rochefort sur Mer, at the national headquarters forthe organization, Mme Michèle Alliot-Marie, Ministerof Defense, signed a partnership agreement in whichthe ministry agreed to give 37 historic sites to theConservancy, including Fort Karl. The official transfershould take place in early 2007: and the good news isthat this promontory will now be protected in perpe-tuity and remain accessible to the public.

Kasika & Benzo at ASCCO on December 21
If ‘Chanté Nwel’ means the singingof Christmas carols in Creole, thenKasika & Benzo is certainly the
most popular group from Guadeloupeto sing Creole Christmas songs. Theywill appear in Saint Barth on Decem-ber 21 for a big holiday celebrationorganized by ASCCO in Colombier.Kasika & Benzo was formed in 1997at the initiative of the municipality ofPointe-à-Pitre, which wanted to organ-ize a Christmas carol event on thePlace de la Victoire. Déclic Communi-cation noted the success of this eventand suggested that the musicians, whowere not officially a group, make analbum. Released in November 1997,the album was a huge success. InDecember 1997, they organized a sec-ond concert, this time taped by RFOtelevision and broadcast during theChristmas holiday period. Albums,concerts, and tours followed in Guade-loupe and throughout the Caribbean.Kazika & Benzo were even invited by
the municipality of Nantes to performin the Erdre Festival. This year marksthe second time they will appear inSaint Barth: the first time was inDecember 2003 when Romy and Cac-tus Production were able to bring one
of the most popular Christmas groupsto the island. This time, it is ASCCOwho is responsible for their appear-ance. This free concert and Christmascarol event will take place on the ten-nis court at ASCCO in Colombier.
Claire Galo-Place performsin a benefit
concert for the RotaryClub on Fridayevening. After win-ning the internationalSoka Harp Competi-tion in Japan in 2003,harpist Claire Galo-Place began a seriouscareer as soloist andchamber musician. Inan effort to make thismagical instrument,that arouses so muchcuriosity, more well-known, and to makeclassical music moreaccessible to a wideraudience, she presentsconcerts in the form of“historical musicalpromenades.” The ideais to introduce eachpiece she plays by
explaining the aesthetictastes of the period, andsituating the piece in theevolution of musicallanguage in general andthe evolution of musicfor the harp in particu-lar.Claire Galo-Place start-ed her musical studiesin 1987, and made herdebut at the early age of
15. After obtaining agold medal at theDouai Conservatory,winning the City ofParis Prize, and a firstplace prize at theTroyes Conservatory,Claire was the 2001winner of the Lovoisi-er grant from theFrench government.This allowed her tocontinue her studies inthe United States,where she took classes
with Susan MacDonaldand received her Mas-ter’s degree (harpsoloist). The concert will be heldon Friday evening,December 15, at theCapitainerie on themain dock in Gustavia,at 7:00pm. Tickets are25 euros.
Christmas Village On The Quai Général de Gaulle
This year, Santa’s works-hop will move to the tro-pics and be set up in
Saint Barth to celebrate “anold-fashioned Christmas.”Organized and run by the non-profit group, Ouanalao, aChristmas village will trans-form the main dock in Gusta-via from December 17-23, withits official opening on Sunday,December 17 at 3:30pm.Booths representing old-timeChristmas celebrations, deco-ration workshops, and variousactivities will all be accompa-nied by local Christmas music.On the afternoon of Sunday,December 23, the last day thatthe village will be open, SantaClaus himself will make a spe-cial appearance. His visit willalso be the occasion for variousateliers and games, as well asthe distribution of Christmasgifts for children.

The 2006 Telethon,held last weekend,raised a total of
35,978 euros in Saint Barthalone, via various activitiesorganized by non-profitassociations and at thepledge center in Gustavia.The grand total of moniesraised in the NorthernIslands will be known atthe end of the week, as the
associations in Saint Martinhad not yet reported theirresults when The Weeklywent to press.The staff at the municipalswimming pool in SaintBarth had set a goal ofswimming 200 kilometers:a distance they almostreached as their swimmersmade it to 150 kms, withstudents, swim clubs, and
water gym groups takingturns doing laps in the poolfrom Thursday throughSaturday. Approximately150 diplomas were distrib-uted to the kids who raiseda total of 74 euros.Many other events thattook place around SaintBarth last weekend in sup-port of the Telethondemonstrated the island’ssupport for this nationalfund-raising event. A sec-ond nautical challenge tookplace in Corossol, wherethe Association of Corossol(ALC) held a 25-hourmarathon of events in thewater and on the beach,
with activities lasting wellinto the late hours of thenight. By the end of theweekend, ALC collected2,270 euros: a great suc-cess!Les Francs Archers, whoinvited everyone to cometry out their dexterity at thearchery range in Saint Jean,collected 315 euros.Visual and performing artswere in the spotlight inGustavia where the associ-ation Saint B’Art organizedits annual Arts Festival,held this year upstairs atthe Capitanerie, and includ-ing the annual paintingcompetition, a concert bythe students of St. BarthHarmony, the island’sSuzuki violin school,singing with the Escapadeand Bons Choeurs choirs,theatre with the troupe SBArtists, and films presentedby the St. Barth Film Festi-val. The various artisticactivities raised more than835 euros: hats off to all fortheir efforts. And the asso-ciation Sauvegarde duQuartier de Public (ASP),which organized a torch-light march through thestreets of Gustavia, raisedmore than 2,300 euros.
