Faith Formation News Page 3 July 23, 2017 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners:

Yours in Christ,

Father Brian T. Bell

As a community of faith, we at

St. Bernard of Clairvaux are excited to participate in the

Together Let Us Go Forth Juntos Sigamos Adelante Campaign.

Through our prayer and generosity, ministries, students, the poor, retired priests, and even our own parish

will greatly benefit.

More information will be made available in the coming weeks, but you are invited to learn more about the

campaign online at togethergoforth.org—there you may watch

videos, read articles, and view frequently asked questions about this historic effort.

Together, let us go forth boldly in faith, hopeful in Christ, and with great joy for the invitation to be disciples of Jesus.

Liturgy of the Word for the children will continue through the summer at the 9:00 &11:00am masses as long as Mr. Schiffer and I are in town.

Registration for the fall semester of Faith Formation classes will begin the weekend of

August 12th/13th. Classes will begin the week of September 11th.

I will be in and out of the office over the summer as I am sure many of our families will be on vacation too! I wish everyone a safe and fun summer! Information about classes and sacrament preparation will be on our parish website by the first of August.

As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns about Elementary Faith Formation, Sacrament Preparation (Elementary, Middle or High School) or Adult Confirmation or if you would like to be a catechist for Faith Formation in the fall, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at the Parish Office, 480-661-9843, Ext.309. God’s Blessings, Kathie

"Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father." This beautiful image gives us a glimpse into heaven. The saints who reside there radiate a brightness, a warmth that resembles the sun itself. Gathered around the throne of God, they share in the luminous presence of the King of Kings, the true Son of the Father.

Perhaps there really is something spiritual about the nearly universal craving to enjoy a tropical vacation, the trend to escape to warmer climates for the winter, or the move towards permanent residence in sunny climates. The continual presence of sunshine, the enjoyable experience of one warm day after another may be in fact like a little taste of heaven. In the Gospel, Jesus himself describes eternal bliss using the imagery of sunshine.

But heat has its downside too. When it's too intense, it can actually be deadly. Think forest fire. Think desert. Think "the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth." These are not images of the four-star vacations that we want to last for eternity. No. Here Jesus is referring to the hellish habitat of "all who cause others to sin and all evildoers." That's not a trip we want to take. As uncomfortable as it may be, we need to examine ourselves to be sure we're not on board a train that's going in the wrong direction. We need to identify and acknowledge any patterns of sin that may have crept into our lives, and seek God's forgiveness. That will get us back on the right track, enabling us to be counted among "the children of the kingdom."

Let's aim for a journey to that kingdom, the one true trip to paradise that lasts for all eternity.

A Time of Peace… Ecclesiastes 3:11

Jamaica Mission News

The mission trip to Jamaica to help the poor and the destitute with the Missionaries of the Poor will take place on March 13, 2018 to March 20, 2018. As always, the missionaries will be gone for one week. Last year many of you requested to publish the dates of the mission early, so you can plan on attending if God would call you to that. Save the date: March 13, 2018 through March 20, 2018.

There will be a follow-up meeting later in August to discuss the mission and provide necessary information. Please note that you need a current passport to fly to Jamaica and we fly through Miami because the flight connections are more reliable and frequent. Most of the time we fly American Airlines.

Father Brian is also planning on hosting the Missionary of the Poor Sisters here, at our parish, on October 14 and 15, 2017. They will introduce you to their particular charism and mission in their outreach to children, babies, elderly women, and pregnant mothers with their babies and children. They also hold a regular soup kitchen to feed the poor women and children in the ghetto. You will meet them in October.

For more information on the Jamaica Mission Experience please contact Cheryl Roehm: 480-236-5688 and [email protected] or Cristina Dixon: 480-816-1889 and [email protected] .
