Bonnies fans,

On behalf of our entire department, thank you for your support in the 2013-14 academic year. As you will see in the pages of this Annual Report, we have plenty to be thankful for and to celebrate.

One of the top priorities at St. Bonaventure is the renovation of our outdoor athletic fields. I am thrilled to say that the first phase of this proj-ect is now well underway and will be ready in time for soccer season. Our newly-renovated turf field will be a huge boost to the soccer and women’s lacrosse teams as well as Bona’s club rugby teams and will be a point of pride for the entire campus.

Our student-athletes continue to be extremely successful in the classroom, as they again ended the year with better than a 3.0 combined GPA. We also recently earned the best Academic Progress Rates since the NCAA began calculating them. Notably, the men’s cross country and women’s soccer programs earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sports based on their most recent multi-year APR. Finally, our student-athletes and staff again logged hundreds of service hours last year in the greater Olean-Allegany community, giving back to the community that supports us so passionately.

Enjoy your summer. Thank you for all that you do for the Bonnies!

Steve WatsonAthletics Director

P.S. – How can you help the Bonnies? 1) Make a gift to the Bonnies Athletic Fund or a project campaign 2) Buy tickets to a game 3) Proudly wear brown & white

2013-14 was another year in a long tradition of St. Bonaventure student-athletes performing at a high level in academics. Some points of pride:

• The Bonnies’ 240 student-athletes combined to earn a 3.14 Grade Point Average in the spring se-mester. Over their entire careers, the cumulative GPA for SBU student-athletes through the spring 2014 semester is 3.16. Both of those figures are better than the student body as a whole.

• Nearly half of the Bonnies’ student athletes – 108 in all – earned Dean’s List honors for the spring semester with a GPA of 3.25 or higher. Seventy-six of those came in at 3.5 or higher, thereby earning a spot on the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, with a remarkable 16 at a perfect 4.0.

• From the team perspective, nine of the Bonnies’ 14 teams hold a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 while four of them – golf, women’s cross country, women’s swimming and diving and softball – stand at better than 3.4.

Women’s Soccer, Men’s Cross Country Earn NCAA APR AwardsThe women’s soccer and men’s cross country teams earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA this spring for posting scores in the top 10 percent of their sports based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate.

On November 2, the women’s basketball program celebrated the official opening of its new locker room and meeting room.

Approximately 40 of the program’s alumni returnedto campus for the opening as well as to participate in an alumni game that morning.

The team’s new spaces rank among the best in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Totaling 1,740 square feet, the locker room includes 15 lockers shaped in a gradual curve so they all face toward a whiteboard and projec-tion screen. The team room includes a study area with personal computers, a large screen TV and a lounge / meeting area. A spacious bath and shower area is on the opposite side of the locker room, while a custom foyer complete with a listing of all of the program’s letterwinners and All-Conference players provides a unique entry.

The $300,000 project was completely funded by the generous donations of over 200 people and corporations. John Meisch ’58 and his wife Kay (center of photo) provided the lead gift of $75,000.

A $2 million renovation to St. Bonaventure’s athletics fields complex is underway.

The field that is home to the Bonnies’ men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams will be converted to an artificial playing surface called A-Turf Titan, which is manufactured by A-Turf of Cheektowaga, N.Y. Lights will be the other major component of the project. In addition, a concrete step entrance to the field and new perimeter fencing will be installed.

Sparked by a lead gift of $1 million from Tom ’80 and Michelle Marra, both the first and second phases of the project will be funded entirely through philanthropic donor support. Fundraising continues for Phase 2, which will renovate the softball field to A-Turf, as well as add amenties to the multi-purpose field such as a new scoreboard, bleachers and press box.

Construction is scheduled to take approximately three months and is expected to be completed in time for the start of the Bonnies’ soccer seasons in August. St. Bonaventure’s successful men’s and women’s club rugby teams will also play their home competitions on the field starting in the fall.

A-Turf Titan is used by the NFL’s Buffalo Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium as well as university and high school athletic fields. It carries a 12-year warranty and includes a sub-surface “shock pad” to improve safety. Another primary benefit of the turf is its drainage system, which will eliminate the postponements and cancellations of games due to wet conditions that have plagued the field.

Lapp capped her superb career this past fall, when she was named All-Conference. She tied for the team lead with eight goals, all while playing at different positions throughout the year. Her skill and leadership were among the chief reasons that St. Bonaventure advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the sixth year in a row. A four-year starter, she totaled 29 career points and was an A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll student. The Silver Spring, Md., native gradu-ated with a degree in elementary early childhood education. Martin is the top relay performer in the swimming team’s history. Over his four years, he amassed 11 Atlantic 10 titles – two individual and nine as part of relays. This past February at the A-10 meet, he set a meet and conference record in the 50 freestyle that was also a school record. His other A-10 individual title came in his sophomore season in the 100 freestyle. Over his career at the A-10 Championship, he finished in the top three in his individual events nine times – with the maximum number possible being 12. He was a part of four relays that set A-10 and team records. Bowker graduated with honors last May and is now working toward a master’s degree in elementary and special education. She has led volunteer efforts at countless team, community and departmental events, many of which serve special needs children and adults. This basketball season, she returned after an entire year off due to ankle surgeries and was the leader of a young team that finished second in the A-10, made the second round of the WNIT and won 24 games – the second most in school history. Bowker was a part of 99 wins over her career, which is a school record. In October of his sophomore season, Paccapaniccia was diagnosed with cardio myopathy, which prevented him from participating in athletics the remainder of that season. Undeterred, he became a major contributor for two A-10 title teams. This year, he finished sixth in the 50 freestyle, eighth in the 100 butterfly and 14th in the 100 free at the A-10 Championship meet -- all in personal best times. His crowning achievement came on the 200 free relay that shattered the long-standing A-10 meet and conference records. An accounting major, Paccapaniccia graduated with honors. In the fall, the Indiana, Pa., native will begin graduate work in St. Bonaventure’s MBA program. Timlin was the captain and a four-year starter for the lacrosse team. She also was the secretary of the Stu-dent-Athlete Advisory Committee, helped manage the basketball game day concessions, was a Peer Mentor and a tutor in the School of Business. A marketing major, the Snyder, N.Y., native was a Dean’s List and A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll student.
