READY TO CLIMB THE MOUNTAIN? Climbing that Lenten mountain with Jesus seems like a

lot of hard work. But what do we encounter at the summit of the spiritual mountain?

Something called Transfiguration. It means we see what was always there, but hidden before. We see truly. We see as God sees. This new vision is given to those who are will-ing to go there to get it. It won’t come to us if we don’t climb the mountain. It won’t come to those who are spiritually parked and waiting for enlightenment to be handed out the drive-thru window like a happy meal. Eucharist does not come in fast food varieties. Eucharist is slow food. It takes a lifetime of remaining steadfast on this journey to absorb it completely.

But if we want a preview of coming attractions, if we want to know where this life is leading us, if we want what the disciples got on top of the mountain, we can have our glimpse of Transfiguration. It is a sustaining vision that can lend us courage in our most difficult hours. It is a privileged view that can teach us what no preacher can say better. The Transfiguration reveals the God in the flesh, and the glory in the humility. Transfiguration reminds us that Christ is hidden in surprising places, and that is why we fast, pray, and give alms.

Many of us, it must be admitted, are not on a spiritual journey much of the time. We are spiritually parked, as it were: in the pew where we always sit or stuck in neutral in the same old habits of sin. Oh, our sinfulness is pretty run-of-the-mill, nothing to get excited about. We’re greedy, lazy, selfish, and judgmental. And, of course, dishonest, because we rarely admit that we’re greedy, lazy, and so on. Not even in the confessional, when you get right down to it. Most of our habits of sin may seem too tiresome to mention. But they are obstacles to the spiritual life all the same, because they keep us from embracing the exuberant fullness of the love of God urgent to be expressed in every moment of history.

Being spiritually parked, we don’t “walk by faith,” so we don’t grow in faith either. Instead, we acquire sacraments and accumulate prayer hours as if they were so much reli-gious flab; not all calories are created equal, as we know. We may grow fat with pious practice, but that’s not the same as achieving spiritual strength. Strength comes when religious practice translates into grace-in-action.

The time-honored practices of Lent—fasting, prayer, and almsgiving—jumpstart the heart muscle. Fasting is a great foundational exercise: Get hungry, somewhere in your well-fed American life, and know how small, fragile, and vulnera-ble you are! .

Fr. Davis Chackaleckel

First Reading — The L said to Abram: All the fami-lies of the earth shall find blessing in you (Genesis 12:1-4a) Psalm — Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading — God has called us to a holy life, not because of our works but according to grace (2 Timothy 1:8b-10). Gospel — Atop a high mountain, Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John (Matthew 17:1-9). FROM YOUR PASTOR’S DESK Continued from previous column

Listening to God can take various forms. At some moments, as when we receive new in-sight or are deeply moved, we want to jump into action. Sometimes this is appropriate and neces-sary. But sometimes God interrupts our eager-ness, and calls us to further reflection or simply to listen in silence.

Hunger puts us on the ground floor of humility, that in-dispensable virtue. It teaches us to be still and know who God is—and who we are—by displacing us from the cen-ter of power and sufficiency.

Youth Ministry Corner Transfiguration

This week: Today, Peter, James and John get to see Jesus in his perfect form. We often see our own imperfections and weaknesses and hide our goodness from others. Jesus shows us that we can let him shine forth from our hearts by caring for others, even when it is difficult. The good news is that when we let Jesus shine through us, we can change the world and our own imperfections and weakness-es are no longer important. The challenge for us this week it to have the courage to reach out to someone in need of a friend, remembering that we are doing as Jesus would want us to. Let others know that God cares for them by being a true friend. Pray: We have many examples of how saints have impacted this world and transformed their lives by letting Jesus shine through them. Jesus help me to have the courage to reach out in love to someone in school or at home this week. Help me to be transfigured into your hands and feet to love and care for others around me.

SAINT FRANCES OF ROME (1384-1440) March 9 Nature and human nature—plagues and wars—turned late medieval Rome into a living hell, particularly for the sick and poor. Frances, by birth and marriage well provided for, was a devoted wife and mother; but like Benedictine Oblates, who to this day “pray and work” while living with their families and working in the world, she joined like-minded laywomen friends in ministering to society’s most vulnerable. Frances’ charity was not only “hands on” but “in home.” Her palace became a hos-pital after the plague claimed two of her three children. When her husband’s death ended their loving marriage of forty years, Frances joined other widowed Oblates in community. In an interesting link to the United States, our nation’s premier religious congregation for women of color, the Oblate Sisters of Providence, in 1833 estab-lished bonds of spiritual communion with these Oblates of Saint Frances in Rome. Though Black History Month is past, take a moment to learn about the good work that Mother Lange’s spiritual daughters are doing still and consider supporting them as a Lenten project: www.oblatesisters.com.

Second Sunday of Lent March 8, 2020 Christ Jesus . . . destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. — 2 Timothy 1:10b

CHANGE Lent is all about change and change is usually not easy. In order to change we have to leave something behind. Today we hear about a very old man who decides to answer God’s call. Abram experiences a tremendous amount of change when he leaves every-thing behind, risking it all for God’s promise. Jesus changes, is transfigured, right before the eyes of his disciples. The Lenten scriptures issue the call for us to change, to be transfigured, so that we, too, will soon share in the glory of God. What is it that the Lord is asking us to leave behind? Are we willing to take the risk for the promise made by God? These questions are at the heart of the Lenten journey of conversion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
