STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Each Lent we gather weekly for the Stations of the Cross, but it is a form of prayer and reflection many have never experienced. The Stations are a 14-step devotion that commemorates Jesus’ last day on Earth as a man. The 14 devotions (or stations) focus on specific events of His last day. Different prayer styles are used to lead us through these stations and invite us to think, reflect, and pray about Jesus’ experience and how it connects to our own experience of suffering or that of others in the world.

St. Catherine’s uses a variety of resources to make the Stations more meaningful to many different populations in our Church. There are Stations specifically designed for children, ones that involve all of our senses, ones that involve music, and ones that invite us to look at the poor and vulnerable. As we move through Lent, we invite you to come to the Stations at least once. This year we are thrilled to host the contemporary Christian music group Trace of Grace for a special presentation of the Stations on Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m. Trace of Grace uses music and narration to help us open ourselves to the experience of Jesus on His last day.

All the Stations begin at 6 p.m., with the exception of Trace of Grace on March 11, which begins at 7 p.m. Here is what you can experience in the coming weeks:

February 19, Shadow Stations: Using a screen and back light, each scene from the 14 Stations is created as a silhouette, inviting us to really see what Jesus was experiencing. (Hosted by the middle schoolers)

February 26, Peace and Justice Stations: Walk alongside Christ on the journey of his Passion and remember our brothers and sisters around the world who experience suffering and poverty each day. (Hosted by the Peace and Justice Committee)

March 4, Enter into the Stations: Allow your whole body to experience what it is like to carry a cross, to fall, to be helped by a stranger, to lay in a tomb. You will be led through the Stations so that you can experience, in a small way, what Jesus experienced. (Hosted by the high schoolers)

March 11, Trace of Grace Stations: Using powerful music to carry you emotionally and narration to help you fully enter into the experience, the Stations will come alive for you. (Hosted by Trace of Grace, a regional contemporary Christian music group)

March 18, Children’s Stations: These stations are designed to help children understand Jesus’ last day and recognize his sacrifice for all of us. (Hosted by the children of CFF)

Parish-Wide Opportunities

LENTEN OPPORTUNITY FOR REFLECTION Come and join other parishioners in making Lent just a little bit more meaningful. We have three groups who will gather weekly for the next five weeks to discuss Mercy in the City (our parish read) and reflect on the Sunday Scriptures. You are encouraged to participate in all five weeks. The three meeting times are: Sunday morning from 10:15–11:15 a.m.; Tuesday

morning from 9:45–10:45 a.m., and Wednesday

evenings from 6:30–7:30 p.m. All three groups are beginning this week, and you are welcome to come to the first meeting or sign up by contacting Ann Marie at [email protected] or 257-2493.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS/SIMPLE SOUP SUPPER This week’s Shadow Stations of the Cross are being led by the middle schoolers. The young people provide a silhouette of each station to help us visualize Jesus’ experience. Stations begin at 6 p.m. and are followed by a simple soup supper. All are invite to participate in both or either of these events.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS – SPECIAL STATIONS OF THE CROSS As part of the observance of the Lenten season, a special musical interpretation of the passion of Christ on Good Friday will be presented on Friday, March

11, at 7 p.m in the Church. The contemporary Christian musical group Trace of Grace will provide music, narration, and song in this moving rendition of the traditional 14 Stations of the Cross. This is a very special event for our parish and we hope you will make it a priority to come!

TEACH US TO PRAY DAY Once again this year we will be hosting a Teach Us to Pray Day during Lent. This day gives you an opportunity to learn more about and experience

different prayer forms. The day will be Sunday, March 6, from 1–5 p.m., and will include a workshop on how to go to Confession, how to use music to pray, praying the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy, and many more.

Additionally, this year there will be some unique opportunities to pray privately. More information will be in the bulletin next weekend!

NOTRE DAME ITALIAN NIGHT FUNDRAISER Fr. Joe is once again lending his culinary skills to help our Catholic schools. On Tuesday, February 16, from

6–8 p.m. at the Country Club of Ithaca, Fr. Joe will be the guest chef to help raise money for Notre Dame High School and the Ithaca–Notre Dame bus. Dinner will include pasta, bread, salad, and desserts. A good-will offering will be collected at the door. Let’s help raise some money for this school and enjoy Fr. Joe’s cooking!

From the Book of Michael Twomey

Michael and his wife Paula traveled with the adult group that returned from the Dominican Republic on January 22.

Ever since Fr. Ron Gaesser connected St. Catherine’s to Monte Plata, I thought that visiting the Portal de Belén was for others—people who spoke good Spanish, people with experience of the poor—but not for me, a person with plenty of teaching experience, but with no experience among the disadvantaged.

Finally my wife Paula and I decided to go. In the weeks before the flight, I wondered how I could serve the people of Monte Plata and the children in the Portal de Belén. I prayed a lot for the inspiration to be able to do some genuine good.

On the first evening in Monte Plata, Paula and I found ourselves being dropped off at the home of Lorenza and Moreno, members of the Missionaries of Jesus, the lay confraternity attached to the Portal. Their home is simple. Their chairs are the plastic kind that Americans use in their yards. But they have an extra bedroom with mosquito netting on the beds, a new kitchen, and interior plumbing, although we quickly needed to learn how to take a bucket shower! Next to their house is the little dry goods store, set up with help from the Missionary Sisters of Jesus, that Moreno administers. Lorenza is a teacher and sometime cook at the Portal.

Over the following days, Paula and I got closer to our two very open and gracious hosts. Lorenza rose at 6:30, before us, to go to the Portal. Moreno would then walk us to the Portal at 8 or 8:30. In the evening, the four of us would talk about the Portal, our families, and our faith. One evening we watched a Catholic lay minister on a TV program talk about prayer—and he was very good! On the night before the Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia, the major feast day for the Dominican Republic, Lorenza told us the hagiographical legend of the Virgin of Altagracia (“high grace”), who appeared to a young girl from the town of Igué whose only wish was to see the Virgin. On another evening, Lorenza brought out her catechism and Bible, plus a book of crossword puzzles about the catechism. That’s when we really bonded. Lorenza, it turns out, really knows her catechism and her Bible, and Moreno is pretty well-informed, too. We discussed topics like typology (a form of symbolism) and apocalypticism. Although they are mostly self-taught, Lorenza and Moreno had a good grasp of these difficult theological concepts. We all stayed up late filling in a catechism crossword puzzle and discussing how to interpret Scripture.

This was the same day that Lorenza learned she has diabetes. After being released from the clinic—and then driving herself home on her motorcycle—Lorenza was a little nervous about the future. Since I, too, am diabetic (Type 2), I was able to reassure her that diabetes is manageable with diet, exercise, and medication Once we started doing the crossword puzzles—her way of saying that my encouragement had gotten through—I realized that my prayer about doing genuine good had been answered.

Now, two weeks home from Monte Plata, it is still difficult to find words for the experience, especially for a short piece such as this. No matter what I had heard about visiting the Dominican Republic from parishioners who had made the journey, only when I saw the Portal de Belén for myself, and only after I got to know Lorenza and Moreno, did I even begin to comprehend what the Sisters, the teachers, and the staff are accomplishing for the people of Monte Plata: the education, the nutrition, and the love that they give the children; the homes that they finance for the neediest; the business assistance that they give to shopkeepers like Moreno; the jobs they have created for people like Lorenza; and the hope of a better life that they give the people they serve. This is why everyone who goes there says that you have to see it to understand what it means to support the Portal de Belén.

It’s true. Go.

“IN THE LOOP” WITH THE HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY As a reminder, High School Youth Ministry will not meet this Sunday, February 14, due to school break. Sessions will resume on Sunday, February 21, with a session titled “Water and Justice: Take a Dip!” This session introduces the concept of water as a justice issue. On both a national and global scale, no issue threatens our survival more than the availability of clean water and adequate sanitation. Participants will examine the current crisis, make connections with Catholic Social Teaching, and consider action steps both locally and globally.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY Middle School Youth Ministry will be not be gathering this Sunday, February 14. We will resume sessions on Sunday, February 21, with a focus on Catholic Social Teaching. During this time, the middle schoolers will explore the fundamental themes of Catholic Social Teaching. Together they will reflect on its key principles and take a look at how they are living out those principles in their family life, in the ways that they treat each other, and in the ways that they reach out to those in need in the larger community.

Our students thanked the Ithaca Police Department, Ithaca Fire Department, Bangs Ambulance, the mayor, and many more by delivering handmade thank you treats and messages.

We are always in need of donations to our scholarship fund. We always have a far greater need than we have funds for.
