Scripture Reflection
There is an axiom that states, “Not to decide is to decide.” It urged us not to allow others to answer the moral questions raised by our nation’s involvement in that terrible conflict, but to decide for ourselves. Making such choices is never easy. Avoiding them is common. Jesus, for his part, was not only a gallant risk-taker, but a clear decision-maker. As he pursued the mission to which the Father called him, he continually decided for us and for the Father. He worked hard to lay out a scenario that would enable others to make similar choices. Never did he make decisions for others or force others into decisions, even decisions that had eternal ramifications. Jesus is inviting us to make such decisions today. We won’t be absolutely sure. What is sure, however, is the command that issues from God’s word: Take the risk. Decide!
Archdiocesan Family Prayer
Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness. We come to you, Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence, murder and racism. We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people. Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence. Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us. Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family. Amen.

Grief Support Group: September 22
Are you struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one? To assist you in the difficult journey, St. Catherine offers a Grief Support Group for adults. This ten-week program is designed to guide participants through the four stages of grief using The New Day Journal by Sister Mauryeen O’Brien as well as a variety of activities including prayer, small group discussions, scripture, selected readings and journaling. 40 Days for Life Vigil: September 26
Our Parish will be teaming up with St. Francis Xavier in sidewalk prayer at the Women’s Health Care Center (Abortion clinic), 2701 General Pershing St. on Sunday, September 26th , 7:00 am - 7:00 pm. St. Catherine of Siena is hosting a FREE NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) Family-to-Family education course. An 8-session education program designed for family members, partners, friends, significant others, and caregivers of adults living with mental illness.
This course is designed to help understand and better support loved one living with a mental illness while maintaining your own well-being. The course provides information about various mental health conditions, and includes topics about communication, problem solving, treatment and recovery.

Families Invited to Join Parish School of Religion
The Archdiocese asks that all children in Kindergarten - 10th grade receive catechesis every year either from their Catholic School or Catholic Church Parish. We offer Parish School of Religion for all kids in K-10th grade who do not attend Catholic School.
All families in need of catechesis please register for our Parish School of Religion (PSR) program for 2021-2022. If your child is completing their Sacraments at St. Catherine of Siena but is receiving catechesis from a Catholic School or other Church Parish please register under "Sacraments Only”. CYO Fall Volleyball League : August 30
Join our Fall Volleyball League! SCS CYO has a long standing tradition of winning the Archdicoesan CYO Volleyball League! Let's keep it up! Deadline to register is August 30th and the season begins September 14th. Times and dates for practices and games will be communicated once rosters are submitted. St. Catherine of Siena is in need of a school crossing guard. School Crossing guards help children cross the street by checking for oncoming traffic, step into the road, and direct vehicles to come to a stop before instructing people to cross.

From the time I was a toddler, my mom began teaching me about the faith and began helping me to know and love our God. Although I found Bible stories interesting, I was a lukewarm Catholic at best, and I did not make God a true priority in my
life. During some years of family hardships, I turned to Jesus. The more time I spent in prayer with him,
the more I felt his presence in my life. I became a stronger and more resilient person, and I was able to face the hardships in my life. Next thing I knew, it was time to apply for high school, and my obvious choice was the best school in the state: Jesuit High School. By the grace of God, I received my letter of acceptance and officially became a Jesuit Blue Jay.
Jesuit provided me with countless opportunities to grow in my faith, and I tried to take advantage of as many of them as possible. Attending in-depth religion classes, joining the Sodality of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, joining the Pro-Life Club, and attending some of the daily masses enabled me
to go from a lukewarm Catholic to a devout Catholic in a matter of months. Putting my faith into practice and making God a priority in all aspects of my life was crucial to my becoming a better Catholic.
Jesuit helped me to change my religious mindset from passive to active, and I was able to see the Church in a whole new light. I began participating in my own Church parish, St. Catherine of Siena. Father Andrew’s and Father Tim’s homilies helped to strengthen the fire in my soul, and Father Andrew connected me to the great SCS CYO community. I finally felt the overwhelming peace of God’s presence in my life. By receiving the Eucharist actively and with intentions, I felt God’s strength fill my soul. By entering the confessional with true sorrow, I felt the overwhelming peace of God’s forgiveness.
However, I have had many obstacles in my quest for unity with God, and I will continue to have them. But, with the help of the Holy Spirit, the faithful communities at Jesuit and at St. Catherine, and my mom, I know that no obstacle is insurmountable. After all, we are a community centered on Christ and ablaze with love!

R egarding the Eucharist, Jesus confided
the following words to St. Catherine of Siena:
“You receive all the divine essence of the
sweetest Sacrament in the whiteness in the
bread. Just like the sun cannot be divided in
the whiteness of the Holy Host. Let us suppose
that the Sacred Host could be divided: even if it
would be possible to fragment the Holy
Eucharist into thousands of tiny Particles, in
each one of the tiny Particles there is the
presence of Christ, the whole God and the
whole Man. In the same manner that a mirror
would shatter into thousands of pieces, the Sacred Host will not shatter or divide the
image of God and Man that you see in the Host; the image of God and Man is in each fragmented part. Contrary to fire, the image of the
Host does not diminish in faith or divinity. Let us look at the following example: If you had one candle and the whole world would light its
candle from that single candle, the light of the candle would not diminish and everybody would have a lighted candle. While it is true
that those who participate in the candlelighting may have more or less flame, everyone would receive exactly the amount of fire to light
their candle. Until that time that it can be better, this example stands.
“If there were a lot of people bringing candles of all sizes – one person with two candles and one with six candles and one with a
candle weighing an ounce and one with a candle weighing a pound or more - then you could see all the lit candles by color. By color, by
its light, by its heat, you would judge that the person that has a one-ounce candle has less light than the one with a pound candle. This is
how it is for those receiving the Holy Sacrament. Man carries his own candle so that he can receive the sacrament; however, that candle
is unlit, but it is ignited when he receives the Eucharist. As a matter of fact, as you are all alike, made and created in my image and
likeness and as Christians you are anointed with Holy Baptism, you can, therefore, grow in virtue as much as you like through my divine
grace. You are not changing your spiritual life that I bestowed upon you, but you can grow and increase in love of virtue, using your free
will with virtue, with charitable affection, while you still have the time, because once time has elapsed, it will no longer be possible.”

does not diminish, even if it is used to
light many candles. Such is the flame
of the Holy Eucharist, because it does
not weaken while enflaming the loyal
faithful who come with their strong or
weak faith. The stronger and weaker
charity of each of the faithful is
symbolic only by the flame’s
dimension of the candles.

MONTHLY EXPLANATION TO PARTS OF THE MASS:
My whole life I have grown up going to Church, school at St. Catherine, and am now entering my junior year at St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Up until March 2020, I went to Mass,
Reconciliation, CYO, and Adoration because I was supposed to. Sadly, I was so worried about what
others thought of me that I was even embarrassed to pray aloud in class. After my eighth-grade year, I stopped going to CYO because “I did not get anything out of it.” But really, I did not want to get anything out of it. I just wanted to have a high school experience where my faith would not get in the way of the things I wanted to do.
By this time, I had gotten myself into a bad place and I had all the wrong ideals to live my life by. I was constantly thinking, “What will people think?” or “Will people think I am weird?” Freshman year was the darkest year of my life. I had begun to struggle with bad anxiety that caused me to miss school and I lost many friends. During this time, I was constantly worried about my friends, my reputation, my dance team, and the emotions I had that were overtaking me. I started to resent God because I did not understand how everything in my life was going wrong.
About 4 months later, Covid struck, and it felt like the world was ending. At first, I felt so alone, and everything was so uncertain for everyone. But while still quarantined in April, God entered my life. Sitting on the floor of my room I read on my computer, “The God of a trillion stars knows my name, and He has a destiny for me.” Those sixteen words changed my life forever because I realized that every single second in my life was a part of a divine plan from God.
Almost immediately, I devoted the next two months of quarantine to Him. I started reading my Bible, praying, and watching St. Catherine Mass almost every day. In the most uncertain time of my life, His presence was so certain. It was in my desperation that God performed a miracle that I may truly know Him. Now that I had God by my side, I had finally let go of the loneliness that had been gripping me for all that year. But once quarantine ended, it was up to me to use God in my life.
In August, I decided to join the CYO leadership team and was blessed with getting to talk to Fr. Andrew and Mrs. Meagan Barras about the journey God had led me through those few months. I can genuinely say that this past year, CYO has changed my life. I love that on Wednesdays, I can gather with so many teens my age with awesome mentors who love Jesus as much as I do. Through CYO, I
have truly encountered God through Bible studies, retreats, talks, games, and most importantly adoration. It has been through those hours of adoration that I have experienced the true power and beauty of the Eucharist. One of my favorite memories from this past year was sitting in Adoration in silence praying for guidance in my life. As I sat there, I kept hearing the word surrender
repeatedly in my mind. Looking up to Jesus on the cross, I finally broke down and surrendered all of my anxiety, problems, and worries to Him. Since that moment, I have finally understood the infinite love from Jesus that He gives to us every day.
During the school year, I decided to go to Adoration every Wednesday and Mass every Thursday morning at Dominican. It was in those two hours every week that inspired me to not hide my faith as I saw the other girls my age around me devoting their time to Jesus. At the sophomore retreat this past April, I realized that God was calling me to become a Student Preacher for Dominican.
Applying for this position was one of the scariest things I have ever done. Was I ready to display my faith to the entire school? After many hours in Adoration and prayer, I had to decide if I cared more about what others thought about me or what God thought of me. Of course, I chose God and got the position along with some of the greatest girls I have ever met!
Once the school year ended, I had to make sure I made time for God so I started going to Adoration almost every day. Mid-way through June, I heard about the TEC retreat in Rosaryville. TEC was the most amazing, God-filled experience of my life. I got to spend a weekend with fifty-two inspiring and loving people who taught me the importance of faith and a relationship with God. It was at this retreat where my friend gave a talk on the Eucharist and opened my eyes to the reality of our relationship with Jesus. She said that on the altar during the Consecration, Heaven and Earth truly meet. When this happens, Jesus becomes literally present in a tiny piece of bread, which we consume. It is truly unbelievable that every Mass, we become closer to Heaven by believing that we have literally eaten Jesus’ body like He intended for us all along. Two years ago, I never thought that I would ever enjoy going to Mass, but I am so much happier with my relationship with Jesus. With Jesus in mind, I know I am ready to grow my relationship with Him and I cannot wait to see what He does in my life!
The Eucharistic Prayer, begins when the priest extends his arms and says,
“The Lord be with you… lift up your hearts… let us give thanks to the Lord our God…”
This moment is the “center and high point of the entire celebration,” through which “the whole
congregation of the faithful joins with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering
of Sacrifice” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 78).
This central prayer of the Mass is why we often refer to the entire celebration as Eucharist, which is not a
thing, but rather an action – Eucharist (a Greek term) literally means “to give thanks.” Although this prayer is
spoken mostly by the priest, the gathered faithful are in no way spectators. We are all doing something even if
we are not speaking – our active participation is paramount here, for we are offering our very selves in
thanksgiving for all God has done to save us and we join our prayer to that of Christ who speaks through the
priest.
The Eucharistic Prayer leads us miraculously beyond space and time – earth is joined to heaven and past,
present, and future become one in our celebration, enabling us at each Mass to be with Christ at His sacrifice
on the Cross (past) and with Him and all the angels and saints at the heavenly banquet (future). This calls us to
actively participate by fixing our minds and hearts on God in thanksgiving and in offering our lives to God as
Christ has done.

Catholic Art Showcase: September 26
St. Louis IX Art Society is a new Catholic art apostolate that aims to build a community based on a common love for sacred art while cultivating relationships between Catholic artists and the local faithful. Co-sponsored by the Seminary, the Society's inaugural event is Thursday, September 26th, 1:00-4:00pm at Notre Dame Seminary's Schulte Auditorium, 2910 South Carrollton Ave., New Orleans. The event includes gallery viewing and a short presentation on the exhibit's theological underpinnings followed by a Q&A with the artists. Presentation begins at 2:00pm. The event is free, but goodwill donations will be accepted at the door.

Vatican Exhibit of Eucharistic Miracles: August 28
Divine Mercy Parish, 4337 Sal Lentini Parkway, Kenner is proud to host the Vatican Exhibit of Eucharistic Miracles. The exhibit consists of 60 of their 120 Eucharistic Miracles in illustrations and detailed descriptions of each miracle that has occurred around the world, dating as far back as the Last Supper.
