Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

Keeping Holy Week Holy! It’s OK if your list includes coloring Easter eggs, buying candy, photos with the Easter Bunny, buying new outfits and preparing for a big family dinner. But are we giving even higher priority to joining with Jesus and His Family in cele-brating His Dying and Rising to Eternal Life?

The Journey Begins We process in with palm branches to honor Jesus as our King of our Hearts, our Victorious Savior. This year we ordered African Palm Crosses which are handwoven by entire families in the nine villages of Masasi, Tanzania. These subsistence farmers use the earnings for food, meds, clothing, school fees with some grants for community projects such as wells.

What do you do with a Blessed Palm? Many display the palms behind a crucifix or religious picture. You can weave them into crosses as a family while they are still green. An old Italian custom is to present your palm branch to someone you have hurt as a sign of reconciliation.

The Sacred Triduum:

Three Days that Changed the World and can still change our world

The Triduum (the three days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday/Easter Vigil Mass) are meant to be a re-treat of “40 hours”—a time to pray and grow in love for Jesus and of Jesus for all. These sacred days are blessed times to come together to pray in church and on our own. Every Catholic of every age should want to celebrate our salvation together on Holy Thursday (7pm) and Good Friday (7pm) and Holy Saturday/Easter Vigil Mass (8pm) - which really are one continuous liturgy. Come and let Jesus make us and our world “a new creation!”

Now is the Time to be Reconciled Who of us does not need to confess our sins, and celebrate being forgiven and reconciled, and receive extra grace/help/love from our Lord before this Good Friday and Easter? Who of us has not hurt Jesus by our hurting of another or ignoring someone in need?

One of the best ways to prepare ourselves to enter into Jesus’ dying and rising—into His overflowing love and mercy—is to go to the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Confes-sions will be heard this Wednesday at 8:30am as well as 7:30pm.

Spread the Gospel, the Good News about Jesus and His Borromeo Family!

Your brother in Jesus,

Father John

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, April 1, 2012

Reflection for Palm Sunday: The Passion As we reflect on the passion of Christ, we remember that more than 44 million people in the United States are living in poverty. While 75% of our gifts to Operation Rice Bowl support Catholic Relief Ser-vices’ programs around the world, 25% of our contributions remain in our diocese to support local hun-ger and poverty alleviation efforts. Your prayers, fasting, learning, and almsgiving through Operation Rice Bowl make a significant difference in the lives of people in our own community and in communities around the world.

This week we travel to the Diocese of Arlington, Virginia While 75 percent of Operation Rice Bowl contributions support CRS’ programs around the world, 25 percent remains in the United States to fund local diocesan hunger and poverty alleviation efforts. In the Diocese of Arlington, VA, a portion of local Operation Rice Bowl funds supports Feed My Sheep. Feed My Sheep provides emergency food assistance to families in rural Virginia. This program is grounded in the Catholic social teaching principle Community and Participation.

Patricia moved to Virginia six years ago to be closer to her family and to attend college. Soon after moving, she found herself struggling to put food on the table. That’s when she met volunteers from Feed My Sheep, a local emergency food assistance program in Gordonsville, VA. Volunteers from several area churches manage Feed My Sheep. The program gives food to families in need. Volunteers help people who are unemployed write resumes and find jobs. They also help families obtain household sup-plies, such as kitchen appliances. In addition, Feed My Sheep volunteers often connect people with other local service agencies.

Today, Patricia is actively searching for a job, and with guidance from Feed My Sheep volunteers, she plans to buy a car so she can drive to work. She also hopes to fulfill her dream of returning to college and finishing her degree.

Walking the Stations of the Cross with our Brothers and Sisters Around the World Station 13: Jesus is taken down from the cross. 44 million people in the United States struggle beneath the cross of pov-erty. PRAY for those in our nation who struggle with hunger and poverty each day. GIVE to your Rice Bowl to help peo-ple off of the cross of poverty.

The Financial Report for March 24/25 will be in next week’s bulletin

THANK YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need by the generosity you display when you share your Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

“If anyone should say to you ‘Why are you doing this?’ reply, ‘The Master has need of it and will send it back here at once.’” MARK 11: 3

“Why are you doing this?” This is a question that could be asked of anyone who gives time, talent or treasure to the Church. An answer is found in the Gospel of Mark, “The Master has need of it . . .” We are all called to give because Our Lord has need of it.

We pray that we may gratefully offer back to Our Lord the time, talent and treasure He has given to us so that we may help complete His work here on earth.

Attention Borromeo Members: In an effort to provide better communications with our parish family, we are interested in developing a new group: IT/Communication Team. The main purpose of the team would be to format an “Email Blast” for those parishioners who are interested in receiving Borromeo info as it is made available. If YOU are interested in helping us develop this team, please complete and return the form at right, or con-tact: Matt Poelker cell: 314-660-9553 [email protected] We would also appreciate it if all of our members who have email access would please provide your information to the church office by returning this form. We will not share this information with any-one outside of the IT/Communication Team. Thanks!

Good Friday Collection Christians around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land.

Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians in the Holy Oland. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Benedict XVI, the annual Good Friday collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are sup-porting Christians in the Holy Land. Franciscans and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing formation and education, main-taining shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral minis-try. For more information, visit www.myfranciscan.org.

Welcome to St. Charles Borromeo Parish!

St. Charles Borromeo School Dear Parishioners:

How do we make Holy Week a holy week? We focus on the events of Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection, Jesus’ sav-ing action for all who will accept it. On the morning of Holy Thursday, each department plans activities for the students to help them understand the beautiful liturgies of the Triduum. At 11:15 our 3rd grade will present the Passion Play. You are invited to attend this memorable event.

When I think about the Stations of the Cross, I wonder how Jesus could continue to put one foot in front of the other to walk that road. Could I have done the same? Some days it feels like we can’t take one more step because it takes too much effort. Calling upon Jesus to help us carry our own crosses is surely the only way to go on. Trusting in Jesus means letting go of everything else and just accepting that one cross we have to bear.

I pray that Holy Week and all its beauty will strengthen your faith and trust in Jesus.

God bless—Mrs. Hoffman

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, April 1, 2012

Mission Trip 2012: Planning Progress

We are in full swing towards going to Tijuana, Mexico the week of July 1-7 to perform God’s work and change the lives of those less fortunate, as well as ourselves! We will be assigned to a family, who through a deep faith in God has been working for a year or more helping other families to have a house built for them. We will furnish the labor to build this deserving family a modest, but dignified dwelling they can call home! The estimated cost per person for this mission is $750—$850. Approximately half of this cost is to cover construction materials and overhead costs. Most of the other half is attributed for airfare to/from San Diego. For those youth partici-pating (college-age and younger), we hope to be able to keep the cost to only $100—$200 per person (and for any adult who wants to go but cannot afford more than $250).

We now have 20 parishioners committed to going on the mission, with this number growing day-by-day. Please con-sider joining this inaugural event.

If anyone of any age wants to go but cannot afford it, please see Father John, who has some willing donors.

Sister Raquel is looking for a house to rent! Her current home in St. Peters has been sold, so she is looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom home closer to St. Charles. If you can help her find something suitable, please call 946-1893. Thanks!

EASTER LILY DONATIONS HELP COVER COSTS OF EASTER FLOWERS! You are invited to help beautify our church for the Easter Season by offering a beautiful lily plant in memory or honor of a loved one. They are being offered at $20 per plant. The plants, placed throughout the church, will be a magnificent addition and enhance our celebration of Christ’s Glorious Resurrection. Please complete this form and return with your check by Monday, April 2. Please put it in an envelope marked “lilies.” Envelopes are also available in the Narthex.

Easter Lily Donation Form Please complete and return by Monday, April 18. You may also place the envelope in the offering basket on Sunday. Checks should be made payable to St. Charles Borromeo. A listing of the Memorial/Honor Names and their Donors will be included in the April 22 bulletin. IN MEMORY (please print)

The Gospel for All Ages Question from the Gospel: How does Jesus’ death on the cross affect how you

live?

Question for Younger Teens: Who walks with you in your life journey?

Question for Grades 4-6 How would you welcome Jesus to your school or

parish?

Question for Grades K-1: What are some things that happen to Jesus during

Holy Week?

This Week’s Reflection Palm/Passion Sunday, which we celebrate today, begins Holy Week. Palms are its symbol, the leafy branches citizens of Jerusalem broke off trees and waved to wel-come Jesus into their city. In its liturgy for Sunday, the Church first reads this peaceful Gospel and then follows with the passion story. Before Mass, we bless palms and celebrate Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. During Mass, we read the story of Jesus’ suffering, humiliation, and death. From earliest times Christians remembered Jesus’ last days by visiting the sites and remembering the happen-ings at them. Our Holy Week liturgies journey with Jesus through the last events of his life—his last supper with his friends, his passion, death, and resurrection. In worship, the word “celebrate” means to remember and make present in story, actions and symbols.

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, April 1, 2012

P. Donaldo

When I was called to make the CRHP Retreat, I didn’t know what to expect. As time went on I found myself being drawn into the Holy Spirit. That feeling remains with me more each day. The bonding with my fellow sisters is unbeliev-able. The camaraderie we share with each other is so special. The Holy Spirit is so close to us. I will never get over the feelings we have for each other.

New Wording in the Mass

THE COMMUNION RITE . . . LORD, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. These are—with one crucial exception—the ex-act words of the centurion, whose beloved servant was dying (Mt 8:8). When Jesus offered to enter his house, he uttered this declaration of obedience, faith, and hu-mility. “For I am a man under authority” (Mt 8: 9, RSV), he said, remarking that when he in turn ordered a soldier to go, he went, or to do this, and he did. The analogy is clear. Jesus need only say the word, and the servant will be healed. The man is too abashed to see Jesus submit to his hospitality. We, however, are granted the great grace of the Eucharist, wherein Jesus indeed does enter under our roof. His is the initiative, not ours. We do not receive him, so much as he comes to us despite the lowliness of our dwelling place. And what beneath our roof lies ill? No more servant now, but our very souls.

THE WAY is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends and the challenges we face while navigat-ing this ever-changing and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an irascible American doctor who comes to France to deal with the tragic loss of his son (played by Emilio Estevez). Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage "The Way of St. James" to honor his son's desire to finish the journey to the church of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.. What Tom doesn't plan on is the profound impact this trip will have on him. Through unexpected and often-times amusing experiences along "The Way," Tom discov-ers the difference between "the life we live and the life we choose,” between the ways of the world and the Way of God. See how God leads different people in different ways to love and faith.

THE WAY

Joke of the Week A priest told his listeners, ”Next week, I plan to talk about the sin of lying. To help you understand my ser-mon, I want you to read Mark 17.” The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, he asked how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The priest smiled and said, “Mark has only 16 chap-ters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying.”
