Lector & Extraordinary Minister Update Upon completion of a training session, Fr. Michael recently

Commissioned the following for service at St. Columba Church:

New Lectors John Condon, Maureen McHugh & David Palmer

New Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Terri Powers, Michele Carey & Patricia Loughney

As part of their training, they watched the new videos prepared by the Archdiocese of New York. We strongly suggest that our

active Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers take the time to view them on YouTube: Proclaiming the Word of God as A

Lector and Serving as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Each video is two parts. They are very

worthwhile viewing.

ST. COLUMBA CHURCH SECURITY In light of recent events in Texas and in other parts of the country, we wish to discuss the security of our church during Mass. Father Michael has asked Amery Bernhardt to chair a Meeting to be held on Tuesday, December 5 at 7:30pm in the School - Room 11. Sgt. Bernhardt is a Westchester County Police Officer with 15 years experience. He is a Certified Instructor for Law Enforcement and Civilian Active Shooter Response through the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training Program. Representatives from the East Fishkill Police Department have been invited. We invite to this meeting , any parishioner who works in law enforcement. Your presence would be truly beneficial.

The Archdiocese of New York has begun a Renew & Rebuild Capital Campaign. The goal is to raise $200 million. Most of what will be raised (74%) will remain in the parishes. Many parishes such as St. Joseph’s Millbrook have already completed the Campaign. The Parish of St. Columba has begun to roll out this Campaign. Among the projects we hope to complete: IN THE CHURCH: Paint the interior, remove carpeting and replace with new flooring, new kneelers, new light fixtures, renewed bathrooms, redo sanctuary with matching altar, pulpit, altar of repose and baptismal font. IN SCHOOL: Replace all windows with new energy efficient windows and blinds. ROOFING: Ensure all roofs are in good shape. Repair where needed. There will be NO Cardinal’s Appeal in 2018. It will be part of Renew & Rebuild. The Cardinal’s Appeal will resume in 2019. We will be in touch as time goes on with further updates!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9TH

is the 38th Anniversary of the death of Venerable

Fulton J. Sheen Please Pray for his Canonization.

Heavenly Father, source of all holiness, You raise up within the Church in every age men and women who serve with heroic love and dedication. You have blessed Your Church through the life and ministry of Your faithful servant, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. He has written and spoken well of Your Divine Son, Jesus Christ, and was a true instrument of the Holy Spirit in touching the hearts of countless people. If it be according to Your Will, for the honor and glory of the Most Holy Trinity and for the salvation of souls, we ask You to move the Church to proclaim him a saint. We ask this prayer through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

IMPRIMATUR

+Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C.

Dear Fr. McLoughlin, We are blessed to be able to experience the love and tenderness for our elderly expressed by so many who support us in our work. We so enjoy meeting these benefactors when we visit the parishes of the Archdiocese. I thank you for allowing us to come to St. Columba again this year. The parishioners were very generous to us; the total collection was $7,791.00. Our Lord in His Mercy showed great favor to our Foundress, St. Jeanne Jugan, by allowing her to devote herself completely to the elderly poor. She would tell the novices, “What happiness for us to be Little Sisters of the Poor.” This happiness extends out to all those who work with us creating a beautiful family spirit within our Home. Please know of our grateful daily prayers for you and all there at St. Columba’s. May God reward you and them abundantly. Thanks again! We look forward to seeing you next year. Sincerely grateful, Sr. Mary John, l.s.p.

POLISH WIGILIA (OPLATEK)

The Christmas Eve Wigilia Supper forms the focal point of the Polish Yuletide customs. Wigilia, which means vigil, commemorates the birth of Jesus. For Polish families, the meal starts when the eastern star appears through the parlor window to serve as a guide to the Birth of Jesus in the same manner as the star of Bethlehem was a guide to the Magi! The meal begins with the ancient tradition of breaking oplatek, a thin wafer, or bread of love. It is passed to the various members of the family who put it to their lips and wish each other Blessings for the upcoming year. These wafers are now available in the Rectory.

Parishioners are you able to donate sheets to be used to make costumes for the Living Nativity for the Teen Group? We are in need of dark colored sheets, pastels and whites. Left over sheets will go to St. Denis to the Senior Group who sews the lap blankets for the nursing homes and shut ins. The sheets are to be left in the St. Vincent De Paul room in the narthex as soon as possible. Also, if anyone would like to help sew some costumes, please contact me at [email protected]. Thank you!

Jane Bilello, a long time St. Columba parishioner, will be going on a Mission trip to Haiti in January 2018 with the Franciscan Friars. Haiti is the poorest country in this hemisphere. The mission group will be working in an orphanage that cares for handicapped and mentally disabled children. The unpaid 15 volunteers who work there, caring for the children, are also in great need. They need a house, and latrines, which the group plans to build while they are there. They will give food, hand out clothing and shoes to families in need, plan to build 30 chicken coups, and give 5 chickens to each family. This way they can either eat the eggs or sell them. Every dollar Jane raises will go completely towards the project. There are no overhead costs. Personally, she will pay for her own airfare, room and board. Could you please help this Christmas Season by being as generous as you can? Your donations will provide for the materials needed. The mission team will provide the muscle, the smiles, the hope and the love that these people need. Please make all checks payable to FRIAR SUPPLIERS and mail back to Jane Bilello at 53 Brandy Lane, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590. A tax donation letter will be mailed to you in late January. If you have any questions, please call Jane at (845) 223-7252. Thank You!

DECEMBER 8TH FROM 9PM - 1AM

It was on the feast of the Immaculate Conception that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the

bridges these two feasts to honor our Blessed Mother and to pray for the sanctity of all human life.

It’s a Pro–Life prayer service with exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, 20 decades of the Rosary, prayer to St. Michael, silent prayer and

hymns. Please join us for 1 hour or more.

In your 30s through 50s? You’re invited to Catholic in Real Life’s Annual Advent Faith Sharing and Potluck December 16th @ 6pm!

Come take part in a casual discussion that will enhance your Christmas, and stay for a delicious meal & fellowship. Church of
