Thoughts from the Second Floor Front VI Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 16, 2020 We continue our Liturgical journey through Matthew’s account of the Gospel this year. Within his account Matthew has seven sections; the Infancy Narrative, Five Discourses each with its own theme and then the Passion Narrative. Chapter 5 contains the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount or, as it is also called, the Great Ser-mon and is in the first of the discourses. The section we hear this weekend is traditionally referred to as the Great Anti-Theses. Jesus, in a classic teaching style announces what was taught and then offers a new teaching. In this passage there are six examples of conduct demanded of those who claim to be a disciple of Christ. Each one deals with a commandment from the law that Jesus recognizes then follows Jesus’ teaching on the topic. You have heard that … but I say to this; hence the title “The Antitheses.” In Jesus’ teaching He accepts three from Mosaic law and extends or deepens its meaning. These He rejects as a standard of conduct for His disciples. At his trial later in the gospel, Jesus is accused of preaching against the Temple and the Law. In chapter 5 He states that He has not come to …abolish the law or the prophets…. but to fulfill. While Jesus’ teaching is anti-thetical to the Mosaic Law in many instances, He also has a way of leading His followers into a deeper and more profound understanding of the meaning of the Law and His new commands. A Catholic Scripture scholar named Fr. Benedict Viviano, O.P. has offered a more nuanced approach to this teaching in chapter five of Matthew’s gospel. Rather than refer to the statements as Anti-Theses, Viviano calls on us to recognize them more as Hyper-Theses. Not against but beyond. The Law of Moses states You shall not kill. Jesus’ assertion is that getting angry is the more pressing issue. Think about it for a minute. The likelihood that anyone of us is going to commit murder before the day is out is re-mote at best. The probability of anger and the accompanying actions, words and the concomitant bad feelings that remain in the relationship afterwards are a real danger; whether it is with your brother, your sister, your parent or your spouse. The threat of Gehenna is not hell. It is a real place on the south side of Jerusalem where idolatrous Jews would sacrifice their own children to the pagan god Molech. It was considered cursed and eventually turned into the town dump where there was a continual fire burning refuse from the city. It became a symbol for everlast-ing punishment. All that for getting angry. The command against adultery again is taken to a new level. In this hyper-thesis Jesus is not endorsing self-mutilation. However, nothing should be held onto if it blocks the Kingdom of God arriving in and through us. The call is to treat each other with the dignity we all deserve simply because we are children of God. To view others as objects to be used for our satisfaction or gratification diminishes who they are and diminishes us. Think of the li-centious nature of our contemporary culture. Whether it is in the entertainment industry or commercial advertise-ments there is a level of reductionism that objectifies the other. Our focus is not to be on that person as an object but see the other in relationship; recognize and celebrate that person for who they are and not for what they can do for you. Because divorce is so common anymore a real sensitivity is needed to address this issue. Sadly, sometimes marriage does not work out, for a variety of reasons. But divorce, as a satisfactory solution to marital difficulty, is more than regrettable. I see it in the priesthood as well. A young man, after several years of prayer, study and dis-cernment gets himself ordained and then in even less time walks away from it. Commitment is an important aspect of discipleship that is lamentably lacking in the world and understanding in the hearts and minds of so many. The final admonition addresses one of my favorite things – language and its use. Aside from the coarse sound foul language has by its very nature, it is truly a reflection of the speaker. I think people use foul language because they are not smart enough to come up with much of anything else. Was it not Dr. Henry Kissinger who said that the art of true diplomacy was telling someone to go to hell in such a way that they actually begin to look for-ward to the trip? Take care in your use of language; it reveals more about you than you may realize. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

I O /S T This is the 3rd week of our Increased Offering/Stewardship of Treasure Appeal. Since it began, many parishioners have responded to Msgr. Diamond’s request by making an increase to their Offertory giving to St. Cornelius. Monsignor is very grateful and asks everyone who has not yet responded, to return their envelope this week, or in next week’s collection. Alternatively, you can take advantage of electronic giving, which makes consistent giving easy. Visit our web site at www.saintcornelius.org and click on the “Treasure / Parish Giving” banner. Thank you for your support.

The Parish Religious Education Program has a desperate need for a catechist. The teacher of our combined 3rd/4th grade Wednesday evening class has to step down for medical rea-sons. This is a great opportunity to try out being a catechist for just the remaining 10 classes of the school year! Please contact Mrs. Swetland if you are interested. 610-459-2502 or [email protected] Support and lesson plans will be provided as needed.

“Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed,

for he shares his bread with the poor.” (Proverbs 22:9)

St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise inter-faith ministry in southern Chester County. Our forty-four reg-istered volunteers spend time with the most vulnerable in our neighboring community until they find stable housing. We need 27-30 volunteers each time we serve 4xs a year. We welcome new volunteers and if you can’t volunteer, we would appreciate donations to support the food purchases for the meals that we prepare when we have our time to volunteer. We have an upcoming retreat for healing after abortion. It is designed to help you experience the mercy and com-passion of God. It will help you focus on the buried emo-tions of the past and begin healing in a non-judgmental, safe, loving, and confidential environment. It will give you hope for your future and freedom from the pain with-in your heart and soul.

Post-Abortion Healing Retreat March 27-29, 2020

Malvern-Frazer, PA A Woman’s Testimony: I received great inner healing during my retreat. I recommend it to any-one suffering from abortion. I was able to forgive myself and found Christ’s unconditional love. A Man’s Testimony: For 18 years, I had been haunted by guilt that no one could take away. Through the retreat, I was able to forgive myself. God has given me a peaceful mind, cleansed my heart and washed away my guilt.

SNOW CLOS ING The safety of our children both in school and PREP are of the utmost importance. Ice, sleet and snow can come at any time. During the week, Monday through Friday, if the Unionville Chadds Ford School District announces the closing of schools, or a two hour delay because of weather, the 7:30 AM Mass will not be celebrated. It takes a big undertaking to clear the parking lot and have the pathways shoveled. Closing the school and canceling PREP allows our snow removal company to clean up the snow and restore our property to a safe and active place. If schools are closed ALL ACTIVITIES for the day and evening are canceled.

Remember - Safety comes First!!

Place this form in the nomination ballot box located in the ves-tibule of the church on those weekends. You will also be able to submit nominations electronically through Msgr. Diamond’s Thursday afternoon email.

The St. Cornelius Literary Society

The SCLS is well under way for 2020. Our gathering for January and February has looked at the works of Graham Green’s The Power and the Glory and selected short stories by Flannery O’Connor. For our March readings the group voted on two works by C. S. Lewis; Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters. These books have been published numerous times over the years, so you are likely to find vari-ous editions and book covers. They can

be purchased through Amazon as used for a very low discounted price. We will keep our usual format of time and place on Sunday, March 8 at 3:00 PM in the Fr. Simon Room in the PLC. As always, I hope you find these stories thought provoking and insightful. Even if you have not completed the readings, please join us for an insightful and live-ly discussion with your fellow parish-ioners.
