The Gospel this week praises dishonesty. Jesus identifies our
dishonest steward as a man who takes advantage of his misfortune
and, by his initiative, prepares for his fall from grace. He is part of
“the children of this world.” This identity doesn’t mean simply
‘worldly;’ it points to a future that has little to do with living in the
Kingdom of God. Jesus explains, “Street wise people are smarter…
surviving by their wits…I want you to be smart in the same way ---
but for what is right --- to stimulate you to creative survival…so you
live, really live, and not complacently just get by on good
behavior.” (Luke 16: 8-9; The Message Bible) The Kingdom of God is
a reality here, and now not simply a reality after death.
We are often so caught up in materialism with a consumer mentality, tempted by
commercials to find our happiness and fulfillment in the marketplace, that we forget
that “all good gifts around us, come from heaven above, so thank the Lord, so thank
the Lord for all his love.” (Godspell) St. Paul reminds us that “the love of money is
the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith
and have pierced themselves with many pains.” (1 Timothy 6:10) We must avoid at
all costs being seduced by money and, “Stay alert, this is hazardous work I’m
assigning you…be as cunning as a snake and inoffensive as a dove,” (Matthew 10: 16
ff; The Message Bible)
We may live in a dangerous world, but for the people of faith, we know that we are
under the all seeing eye of God and God’s loving care. Remember, for those “who love
God all things work together for good.” (Romans 8)
Dishonest and Praised?

Bible Study and Video Commentary on the Books of Judges and Ruth
Join us for this 9 week bible study on the books of Judges and Ruth.
Judges provides religious perspective on Israel’s successes and failures while
they occupied the Promised Land until the rise of the monarchy. In the book of
Judges, considerable importance is attached to the religious and political
development of the tribal life of the Israelites. The people are bound together
solely by their faith in YHWH.
The Book of Ruth is a beautiful story of love, loyalty, trust and faith. This book also provides some history on
how Jesus comes from both Jewish and gentile roots.
Each week's lesson includes a reading from one of the above books of scripture, study questions, a group
discussion and a video commentary by either Fr. Mitch Pacwa or Fr. Scott Courtney (both of whom have been
featured on EWTN).
Study Materials include a New Collegeville Bible Commentary booklet on Judges/Joshua. (Note: those who
attended our previous study on Joshua already have this commentary). The bible alone will be used for the
Book of Ruth (no commentary booklet will be used).
Cost: There is no charge to attend. Judge/Joshua commentaries will be available to purchase for $10.
Dates: Tuesday evenings starting September 20th through November 15th
Times: 7:00 – 8:30 PM
Location: SEAS classroom #3 & 4
Join us as your schedule permits.

welcome a nice group of candidates into our church. If you are interesting in learning more about our faith (or
know someone who has questions) and have not contacted us yet, you’re not too late! Simply call the Religious
Education Office, (248) 879-1314, and leave a message for Terri Konwinski. She would love to hear from you.
Our Elementary Religious Ed. begins Wednesday, October 5th with our regular class times, 5:00 - 6:15 PM
for the first session and 6:30 - 7:45 PM for the second session. Registration for the Elementary Grades is now
available online at saintliz.org. As always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask, we are happy to help
you.
Question of the Week for Youth
In today’s Gospel, we hear from John,
“For God did not send his Son into the
world to condemn the world, but that
the world might be saved through
him.” Do your actions and words
help others know Jesus’ love or
condemn them?

if you have any contact with our
South Oakland Shelter (SOS)

We encourage you to spend some time “Getting to

guests pack all of their possessions in a bag (some are
lucky enough to have a suitcase) every Sunday and
carry them to the next church. Imagine what it is like
to have everything you own in a bag. There are
homeless men, women and children and all of them
have unique stories.
See the box about VIRTUS on this page for more
information on how to register for the class.

Where Do We Begin? A Picnic Thank You
Our St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 40th Anniversary/Picnic
was a huge success on Sunday, August 21st. The
total parishioners who RSVP’d were 296! Thank you
to the staff who assisted with the gathering of the
necessary components to put this event together and
their stepping in to volunteer when needed. As for
thanking the many volunteer parishioners, there were
just way to many to even begin to list! Thank you all
from the bottom of our hearts. This wonderful social
event could never have taken place without each and
everyone of you helping out.

Respect Life will be holding an on-going Baby Shower to benefit Abigayle
Ministries, a local crisis pregnancy center. It is not enough that we pray to end
abortion, and ask our legislators to pass laws to end abortion. We must help
women who are pregnant and scared and believe that they have no other option.
Donations of new or gently used baby clothing can be placed in the crib in the
parish hall. Baby food, formula, diapers and other baby necessities are also welcome. Unfortunately, we cannot
accept stuffed animal toys. Thank you in advance for your generous support.
Respect Life Committee
Please note…
Mass intentions should be arranged two
weeks in advance to appear in the bulletin.
Requests for names to be mentioned during
the Prayers of the Faithful or for the bulletin
prayer list should be provided by a member
of the family.
The Prayer List is updated monthly. If we do
not hear from you to keep your person on, we
will take him/her off the list. You can always
call to put him/her back on.
It is appropriate that Mother Teresa’s
canonization took place during this
Jubilee Year of Mercy. Her life
witness helps us to look at the
circumstances of people where we
live and to meet their need.
This Week:
What “small thing” can you do to make the life
of another better, to help Christ’s mercy to be
known? How will mercy be your “identity
card?”
The Year of Mercy: Do Small Things with Great Love!
Food Bank Kudos
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton donated 652 pounds of food
and paper goods this past month. Your remarkable
generosity is most appreciated! Deliveries take place
on the last weekend of each month. Let’s continue this
spirit of giving.
