Dear Friends in Christ, Following Pope Francis’ recent visit to Bolivia, we see the example of our Holy Father and how he teaches us what it means to be “Missionaries to the Nations.” Why are we called to be missionaries to the nations? We find the reasons in the following words: “The pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature, since it is from the mission of the Son and the mission of the Holy Spirit that she draws her origin.” These words from The Decree on the Missionary Activity of the Church help us to understand the foundation of all Catholic missionary work. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ad Gentes – Latin for “to the nations” – we are grateful for the nearly 60 years of missionary service by priests of our Archdiocese. Our Latin America Apostolate began and continues due to the terrible shortage of native diocesan priests in Bolivia, where there is only one priest for every 20,000 Catholics – compared to here in St. Louis, where we have one priest for every 2,000 Catholics. Today, three priests and one Bishop Emeritus serve as missionaries in Bolivia. Fr. Pat Hayden, Fr. Jim Michler and Fr. Tim Noelker serve at Maria Reina Parish in the mountainous city of La Paz, as well as at Santiago Parish in the rural town of Calamarca. Bishop Emeritus Morgan Casey works 6 months of the year in the warm rainforests of the Vicariate of the Pando. The weekend of August 1-2, please prayerfully consider helping our priests in Bolivia continue to be missionaries to the nations. Your prayers and financial offerings will allow our Archdiocese to fulfill Jesus’ missionary mandate: “Go into the whole world and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19) Asking God’s blessings on you and your families, and grateful for your support of our Latin America Apostolate, I am, Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

The Little Sisters of the Poor, who have been welcoming aged poor persons and sharing their lives with them within our Archdiocese for over 140 years, will be visiting our parish Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23 to speak of their mission within the Church, and to ask our help. Their home, in North St. Louis, currently serves 115 needy elderly persons who are loved and cared for until death, so that they can live in security and dignity. The heart of their mission is simply to provide a “Home”, so that those elderly with whom the sisters joyfully share their lives, realize how much God loves them and wants them to be with Him forever in heaven. Throughout their history, the Little Sisters have depended on the collaboration of the laity to enable them to support their Residents and live their vocation. The Sisters will have envelopes in the pews and will briefly speak at Mass to ask your support. Please make checks payable to the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Zip Rzeppa – “For a Greater Purpose” Join us at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, as Zip Rzeppa discusses his new autobiography “For a Greater Purpose.” All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of the book. There is no charge for the event (a free will offering will be taken). The discussion will take place at St. Martin of Tours in Runge Hall (610 W. Ripa Ave. St. Louis, MO 63125 at the intersection of Telegraph & W. Ripa). For more information, please contact Adam Wright, Director of Stewardship (544-5664).

WISE WORDS

“ABOVE ALL, THE COMMON OUTCRY, WHICH IS JUSTLY MADE ON BEHALF OF HUMAN RIGHTS-FOR EXAMPLE, THE RIGHT TO HEALTH, TO HOME, TO WORK, TO FAMILY, TO CULTUREE IS FALSE AND ILLUSORY IF THE RIGHT TO LIFE, THE MOST BASIC AND FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT AND THE CONDITION FOR ALL OTHER PERSONAL RIGHTS, IS NOT DEFENDED WITH MAXIMUM DETERMINATION.” POPE JOHN PAUL II
