FROM OUR PASTOR

Most scholars believe that Jesus primarily used the Aramaic language as his everyday speech. The towns of Nazareth and Capernaum, where Jesus lived and taught, were Aramaic-speaking communities, though Greek was also widely spoken

in the eastern Roman Empire. Jesus probably knew enough Hebrew to discuss the Hebrew Bible, and through his commerce as a carpenter he may well have had some rough Greek to deal with customers. In today’s Gospel Mark records a completely Aramaic word from Jesus: “Ephphatha”; and he has to add a translation for his Greek readers: “that is, ‘Be opened’”. Jesus touches the deaf and dumb man, he prays, and finally he pronounces this powerful word to complete the miracle.

This weekend I should be praying the same powerful word over all of you, not to open you ears but to open your purses. As you know, my special task at this moment is to inspire you to do all you can for our fundraising efforts. That’s not an easy task. I know that the people of Saint Charles are open-hearted and that you want to do your best; but I also know that your purses, once opened, may not have very much inside. Nevertheless, as we look forward, I invite you to place your trust in God.

Next weekend, September 12th/13th, is the Commitment Weekend for our Alive in Christ Alive in Christ Alive in Christ Alive in Christ

campaign. Many hours of planning and writing and talking have been leading to this, and a group of us has been praying about it as well. In your information packets you will have found a pledge card. Please complete it and bring it with you to Mass, although

there will be more pledge cards available in the church. After the homily at each Mass next weekend there will be a collection of pledge cards and they will be presented at the altar.

1. Some people have already given in their pledges and we are hugely grateful to them for giving a lead. If you are in this group, put your name on one of the spare pledge cards in the pew, mark the box for “pledged already”, and hand the card in to the collection.

2. If you have your completed pledge card with you, in or out of a Saint Charles envelope, just put it in the basket at the special collection.

3. If you did not get a packet, or have forgotten your pledge card at home, you can fill in a pledge card on the day and hand it in.

We place our pledges before the altar because they represent our sacrifices, our hopes for the future of our parish and school, and our gratitude to God. As I said when I spoke to you two weeks ago, I don’t really know who may be able to give more and who less. I really do try to “show no partiality”, as Saint James recommends in today’s second reading. However, there may be people who have been materially blessed even in these hard times. I would like every family to make that determined sacrifice of a dollar a day over five years, which amounts to $1,800. But if you are able to give more, please be generous and give all you can.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process of conversion and initiation in the Catholic Church as adults journey together in faith and share experiences while discerning God’s call. For more information, contact the parish office.

CHILDREN & BAPTISM IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Do you have a child whom you are considering having baptized in the Catholic Church? Are you aware that only children not yet seven years of age may be baptized using the Rite for Infant Baptism (just Baptism)? Once a child reaches the “age of reason” (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult is—through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic.

If you are considering having your child brought into the Catholic Church through the R.C.I.A. or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

ADULT CONFIRMATION

To be a godparent or a sponsor for anyone, you must first be a fully initiated member of the Church yourself—that is, you must be baptized, confirmed and be free to receive Communion.

If you are an active, practicing Catholic who has never been confirmed and wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, please contact the parish office ASAP. You will need to provide a baptism certificate and a marriage certificate if married.

VOCATIONS CROSS In July St. Charles Borromeo began a program to help the parish become more aware of the need to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The Vocation Cross, the

invitation to a parish family to host the Vocation Cross at a different Mass each weekend, is an effort to do this. Those receiving the Vocation Cross are asked to place it in a prominent place in their home and to recite a prayer for vocations each day at their choice of prayer time. If you are interested in hosting the Cross, please call the parish office and leave your name and phone number.

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

He put his finger into the man’s ears and, He put his finger into the man’s ears and, He put his finger into the man’s ears and, He put his finger into the man’s ears and,

spitting, touched his tongue; spitting, touched his tongue; spitting, touched his tongue; spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, then he looked up to heaven and groaned, then he looked up to heaven and groaned, then he looked up to heaven and groaned,

and said to him, and said to him, and said to him, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”) “Ephphatha!” (that is, “Be opened!”)

(Mk 7:35)(Mk 7:35)(Mk 7:35)(Mk 7:35)

Jesus, take us off by ourselves, away from the crowd. Please put your fingers

into our deaf ears. We ask to hear God’s voice

everywhere.

In the crash of waves, the call of a friend,

the cry of the poor.

And as you made mute people speak touch our tongues with your grace.

Let us clearly tell everyone the truth and

wonder of the

Word

that you are.
