24th Sunday in Ordinary Time “…the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying,

“This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” (Lk 15:1)

We can talk about the erroneous perception of the Pharisees and scribes towards Jesus. We can also talk about the people Jesus associated himself with: the sinners, aka you and me. He welcomes us, in spite of our sinfulness. He reaches out to everyone, including the scribes and Pharisees themselves.

In Psalm 139, God is near us, guards and protects us. He knows ‘our hearts and its ways.’ So there is no escape from God, no matter how sinful we may be. We may feel unworthy, but still loved by the same God. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to love and welcome saints and sinners alike.

Jesus’ welcome brings forth repentance. Remember when he called out Zacchaeus, the tax collector from the crowd, and once at home with Zacchaeus and family, the latter expressed his regret and reparations for any wrongdoings. What is in our hearts that we need to repent today?

Then there is great rejoicing in heaven! The Sacrament of Reconciliation is our spiritual homecoming and a re-integration into the faith community of the baptized. Doors are open for an active engagement into the ministries we are called to serve, giving back to God the resources entrusted to us, with thankful hearts.

“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of these I am the foremost.” (1Tim 1:15)
