Weekend at Birney’s

Back to Seminary

As many of you are aware, we oen host seminarians at the

parish, thus providing me the opportunity to ‘dub’ the recto-

ry, Cabrini Chateau! For some of the seminarians, like Zaid

Chabaan and presently Tim DuBois, it is for a pastoral year,

while for others, like Michael Bruno, it is for just the sum-

mer. We are blessed to have them as part of our parish com-

munity and as ‘housemates’ in the rectory. I know for me,

they bring a sense of hope for the future, and remind me of

the original spark I experienced when I first felt the call to

the priesthood. Next week, Michael will begin the process of

moving back to the seminary to begin his second year of for-

ma-on/studies towards the priesthood….Tim will not be

returning to the seminary un-l next August…lucky him!

Please con-nue to pray for Michael, Tim, Zaid and all our

seminarians who are discerning a voca-on to the priest-

hood. The road to the priesthood is a long one, but filled

with many graces along the way. I pray that we will soon

have some of our own from Cabrini in the seminary? If you,

or someone you know has an interest, ques-on or sense

that he might have a voca-on to the priesthood, don’t hesi-

tate to let me or Fr. Dominic know…we are more than happy

to have that conversa-on. For more informa-on about the

seminary, priesthood or seminarians, please go to:

detroitpriest.com.

Priesthood/Parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit

The clergy of the Archdiocese recently received sta-s-cs on

our present and future numbers of ac-ve priests and parish-

es. Once you read these sobering numbers/ projec-ons, you

will be5er appreciate why Fr. Dominic and myself are cover-

ing weekend liturgies at Christ, the Good Shepherd, our

neighboring parish. Please con-nue to pray for both a rea-

wakening of the prac-ce of the faith, and an increase of vo-

ca-ons to the priesthood….God is s-ll calling, but we need

to help those being called to hear and respond. As you can

see, there is plenty of room for improvement!

diocesan, and report directly to the (Arch)Bishop of their

(Arch)Diocese. Religious Order priests, (i.e: Franciscans, Jes-

uits, Benedicnes, Dominicans, etc.) are ordained for their

Religious Order, report directly to their Superior, and serve

within a (Arch)Diocese, with permission, but at the discre-

-on of their Order.

Welcome Steve Dolunt

I would like to welcome Mr. Steve

Dolunt as our new Athle-c Director

for Cabrini High School. Steve is a very

familiar face to Cabrini schools and

parish. His children have a5ended

Cabrini schools, he has been an Assis-

tant soball coach for many years, he

faithfully serves as an Usher at the

12noon mass, and most especially, he and his family have

been ac-ve members in the life of our community. Aer 30+

years with the Detroit Police Department, Steve recently

re-red as the Deputy Police Chief and brings with him plenty

of experience with organiza-on, prepara-on and delega-on.

I am very grateful that he was willing to jump into the Ath-

le-c Office at this late hour, and with such short no-ce. In

just these past few days, he has already accomplished a

great deal, and I know the high school will be blessed with

his dedica-on and exper-se.

Quote for the week: ‘ No one yet has ever le the Body of

Christ or His Church for a reason, but many have le for a

thing. The thing may differ: it may be pride, wealth, flesh, or

the thousand-and-one subs-tutes for Divinity.’ – Venerable

Fulton Sheen

That’s all for now, see you in Church.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 August 5, 2018

From the desk of Fr. Dom…. What No One Tells You About…

Ques-on: How does the process of Canoniza-on work?

Canoniza-on is defined as: a declara-on made by the Pope

that a deceased person is raised to -tle of Saint. The canon-

iza-on is celebrated at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and is

usually followed by a celebra-on in the Saint’s place of ven-

era-on. However, there is a process which includes a num-

ber of steps and guidelines before the person can be de-

clared a saint. It includes four stages: Servant of God, Vener-

able, Blessed and finally Saint. It should be noted here that

every person in Heaven is a saint, even if the Church on

earth has not given them the -tle. The Holy Spirit raises up

certain souls for the Church to designate as saints for the

benefit of the faithful. But in no way does it limit the num-

ber of people in heaven to only those people officially desig-

nated on earth as saints.

The process usually does not start un-l five years have

passed since the death of the person. (There have been ex-

cep-ons made in the case of Saint Theresa of Calcu5a and

Saint Pope John Paul II.) This is to ensure the holiness and

enduring reputa-on of the person is beneficial to the faith-

ful. Once the five years are up, the Bishop of the diocese in

which the person died pe--ons the Va-can to open a cause

for Canoniza-on. The Congrega-on for the Doctrine of the

Faith will give permission for the cause to begin aer an ini-

-al inves-ga-on. Once the cause has begun the person is

called a Servant of God.

The second stage is Venerable. In order for a person to be

declared a venerable an inves-ga-on takes place in to de-

termine if the person exhibited “Heroic Virtue”. This is done

by witness tes-mony given by those who knew the person

and examina-on of the person’s private and public wri-ngs.

The evidence is given to a theological commission estab-

lished by the Congrega-on for the Doctrine of the Faith, and

a vote is made by the commission. If the resul-ng vote is

assen-ng for the cause then it goes before the Pope who

officially recognizes the heroic virtue of the person and the

cause con-nues.

The third stage is Blessed. In order to be declared such, a

miracle a5ributed to the intercessory power of the Venera-

ble must be approved. The inves-ga-on of the miracle must

be undertaken in the diocese in which it occurred, not nec-

essarily in the diocese of the cause. The miracle is subjected

to a scien-fic commission and a theological commission.

The scien-fic commission rules there is no scien-fic explana-

-on or natural explana-on for the miracle. The miracle can

be of any type but usually it is medical. The miracle must be

well documented including: the infirmity, the treatment, the

healing and the las-ng effect. The theological commission

rules the cure was a miracle that can only be a5ributed to

God (the devil could cause a disease by his oppression and

simulate a cure by stopping his ac-on but the cure could not

be instantaneous, nor could he regenerate -ssue from noth-

ing.) Also, the miracle must be a5ributed to the intercession

of the Venerable alone. Once the diocesan commissions

affirms the miracle, the results are sent to the Congrega-on

who inves-gate and once they affirm, it is sent to the Pope

for his affirma-on. When the Pope affirms the miracle the

Venerable can be bea-fied. The Blessed is now affirmed to

be in Heaven. Also, public venera-on of the Blessed can be

done at the local or regional level (mass, divine office, imag-

es, etc). However, they are not yet venerated publically by

the Universal Church because bea-fica-on is not considered

an infallible papal act. Therefore, it is not yet appropriate

that the en-re Church venerate. Also, it is why the Pope

does not conduct the Bea-fica-on but the Congrega-on

does.

The final stage is Saint. In order to be declared a saint the

Church affirms a second miracle a5ributed to the Blessed.

The process is the same as it was with the first miracle.

Once the Pope affirms the second miracle the Canoniza-on

can take place and is presided over by the Pope. The decla-

ra-on of Canoniza-on is an infallible papal act protected

from error by the Holy Spirit. The Universal Church can now

offer masses, the Divine Office or other acts of public vener-

a-on in the name of the person. The canoniza-on by the

Pope does not make the person a saint; rather he declares

the person is with God and is an example of following Jesus

Christ.

Thank you Cabrini Parishioners!!!

We could not do it without you!

Members of the Cabrini Conference of St. Vincent de Paul

ac-vely reach out to serve parishioners and others within our

community who are in spiritual or financial need. Inundated

with requests for help with rent, food, u-li-es, clothing, fur-

niture and medical assistance, we have been able to respond

because of your generosity.

Your weekly contribu-ons to the Poor Boxes at the

church entrances average approximately $300/week and are

truly a blessing. Thank you. Certainly our ministry at Cabrini

would not be able func-on without the support of our fellow

parishioners and friends. On behalf of those we serve…Thank

you, Thank you! We also urge you to con-nue with your pray-

ers, and possibly to even consider becoming a Vincenan.

“We cannot be6er assure our eternal happiness than by

living and dying in the service of the poor, in the arms of Prov-

idence, and with the genuine renouncement of ourselves in

order to follow Jesus Christ.” – St. Vincent de Paul

God bless you.
