2 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 14, 2016

Question of the Week

Question for Children: What is one way you can be closer to Jesus today? Question for Youth: We are assured that God will be with us as we go through life, so what strategy do you use to keep God in mind as you deal with the ups and downs of life as a young adult? Question for Adults: Share about a time when life's struggles were so difficult for you that you nearly "threw in the towel." What signs did you see then that God remained with you?

It's been 2 years since our last Baby Bottle fund raiser for the Aldeana Hinkle Pregnancy & Family Resource Center here in Yucaipa. Their mission is Christian outreach to families in need and giving loving life saving pregnancy guidance in the name of Jesus. They have always been so very grateful for our support and acknowledge how much your generosity has helped them to help others. This weekend we begin our Baby Bottle Fund Raiser for 6 weeks. Throughout the year we receive requests for other Prolife help needs that we would like to be able to help as well. So this year we will be donating 80% of our collection to the Aldeana Hinkle Center and retaining 20% for other Prolife needs as they come up. So please, pick up a baby bottle today and return it every 2 weeks filled with coins and Thank You for Giving for Life.

THE COSTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today’s responsorial psalm, Psalm 40, is more familiar to us with the refrain “Here am I, Lord.” This “Here am I” is Jeremiah’s great prophetic response to God’s call. But today’s story of Jeremiah and the refrain “Lord, come to my aid!” remind us that there are always two sides to following the call of God. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews knew this, too. He reminded his readers that even weighted down with burdens and sins, we can still persevere by keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, who himself knew the shame and pain of the cross, but saw beyond it to the joy of sitting at the right of the throne of God. Jesus himself gave the disciples a “sneak preview” of a baptism that would not be as wondrous as the one in the Jordan that inaugurated his ministry, but would be one of fire and anguish. Today’s words from scripture may not be terribly soothing, but in their honesty and strength we can acknowledge the difficulties of daily discipleship, and take comfort in the assurance of our own salvation in Christ.

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY “How to Survive the Holidays”

For someone who is grieving the death of a loved one, one of the many difficult moments is coping with special days such as birthdays, anniversaries, thanksgivings and other holidays that occur throughout the year. Because we are grieving, these holidays have a tendency to sneak up on us, leaving us totally unprepared. On Tuesday, Sept. 13, the Bereavement Ministry offers a special session on “How to Survive the Holidays,” scheduled from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. If you are interested in attending this session, please contact Ursula Benitez at 909-797-2533 ext. 225 to sign-up.

Would you like to volunteer to be a Wedding Coordinator?

All weddings at St. Frances X. Cabrini Church require the use of a Wedding Coordinator. The main role of the Wedding Coordinator is to help lead the rehearsal on the night before the wedding. On the day of the wedding, the Wedding Coordinator arrives at least 1 hr prior to the ceremony to set up for the celebration, assist the celebrant and wedding party during the ceremony, and help pick-up after the ceremony. Rehearsals are a 1 – 1 ½ hr time commitment. Weddings are scheduled on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. Commitments throughout the year vary. If you would like to join this joyous ministry, please contact Ursula at 909-797-2533 ext 225.

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound “No greater gift can be given to those who suffer than the gift of Christ himself in the Eucharist.” (Pastoral Care of the Sick)

Currently, we have 29 Ministers, who bring communion to 130 homebound. We are in constant need of additional volunteers, so that when a request is made, we are ready to assign a minister. Our ministers not only bring Christ to the homebound, they also serve as a link to our church community. For many, our volunteers are the only outside contact and by visiting them once a week; we let them know that they have not been forgotten. So I am asking you to please look into your heart; is one hour a week really too much to ask to serve those who want to take part in our worship, but can’t? For additional information on this rewarding ministry, please contact Ursula at 909-797-2533 ext. 225.

MISSION 2016 Join in the worldwide Mission of Jesus… Next weekend, we are invited to join in the worldwide mission of Jesus through our prayer and support of the Propagation of the Faith. What better way to celebrate 2016 than to help bring the life-giving message and the love of Christ to millions of the poorest people in the world today? We can do this—all of us—by praying daily for the missionary work of the Church, offering our personal crosses for missionaries and those they serve, and making a financial gift.

Next weekend our parish welcomes Deacon Dan Hudec from the Missions Office to speak at all our Masses on our baptismal call to be “missionaries.”

Stephen Ministry … Why should we be interested in the Stephen Ministry, or one of the other ministries, offered in our parish? We know that one of the profound reasons for the Incarnation was Christ’s establishment of His Church. He “called” his apostles (with Peter at the Head) plus many disciples, and they in turn eventually “called” people (God working through and in them), until the call went out over the entire world, including you and me in this 21st century. We are “called” to faith in God, leading to the sacraments, and God’s sanctifying grace, as He adopts us into His Body, His Church, His Family, and His Kingdom. Over and over in scripture readings, we hear about service and stewardship, as it relates to God’s Kingdom. In 1 Corinthians 4:1, St. Paul tells the converts (and us), “Thus should one regard us as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” He goes on in 1 Corinthians 15:58 to say “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be firm, steadfast, fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labors are not in vain.” In Galatians 6:9-10 he tells us, “Let us not grow tired of doing good, for in due time we shall reap our harvest, if we do not give up. So then, while we have the opportunity, let us do good to all, but especially to those who belong to the family of the faith.”

Stewardship Prayer Oh God, filled with desire by your call for discipleship, while sharing our lives in imitation of your son Jesus Christ, and by following the footsteps of our Patroness, St. Frances X. Cabrini, we profess that the call requires us to be stewards of the gifts you have given us. As stewards we receive your gifts gratefully, cherish and tend them in a responsible manner. We share them in practice and love with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. We pledge to our ongoing formation as stewards and our responsibility to call others to the same mission. Almighty and ever faithful God, it is our fervent hope and prayer that You who have begun this good work in us will bring it to fulfillment for the greater honor of your Name, of your Son and your Holy Spirit. Amen

Amen
