Dear Brothers and Sisters: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.” These words from last Sunday’s first reading continue to echo in my mind as we reflect on Jesus’ call of his apostles on this first Sunday of Ordinary Time. When forming a winning team, owners of national baseball, football or basketball teams go to great lengths to re-cruit the very best players. Scouts visit university campuses and offer millions in salaries and attractive incentives to would-be team members. Much negotiation takes place before a contract is finally signed for a position. Not so with Jesus. He seems to look for credentials which few in this world would ever even consider. A bunch of smelly fisherman, a tax collector and a zealot will form his team. We might think they are misfits or at the very least under-qualified to be the twelve of his inner cir-cle. But it is the maxim of our faith that “grace builds on nature.” He changes them from being “fishermen” to “fishers of men.” The Lord always looks beyond the exterior to the heart, and he knew that their hearts were sound. In spite of the faults and weakness they displayed, he believed in their love for him. So it is with us. It is easy for us to think only of our unworthiness when it comes to an-swering the Lord’s call to serve in differ-ent capacities within his Church. It is a great consolation to know that God choos-es the weak and makes them strong in serving him.

Notas del Pastor

Queridos hermanos,

“Porque mis pensamientos no son los de ustedes, ni sus caminos son los míos, afirma el Señor.” Estas palabras de la primera lectura del domingo pasado siguen resonando en mi mente mientras reflexionamos sobre la llamada de Jesús a sus apóstoles en este primer domingo del “tiempo ordinario” (tiempo durante el año).

Al formar un equipo ganador, los dueños de los equipos nacionales de béisbol, fútbol o baloncesto hacen todo lo posible para reclutar a los mejores jugadores. Los busca-talentos visi-tan a los universitarios y les ofrecen millones de dólares en salarios e incentivos atractivos para atraer a los miembros prospectivos del equipo. Mucha negociación se lleva a cabo antes de que un contrato por fin se firme para una posición.

No es así con Jesús. Parece que él busca credenciales que pocos de este mundo ni siquie-ra consideraran. Un grupo de pescadores malo-lientes, un recaudador de impuestos y un fanáti-co formarán su equipo. Podríamos pensar que son inadaptados o por lo menos poco capaces de ser los doce de su círculo íntimo. Pero la máxi-ma de nuestra fe dice que "la gracia se basa en la naturaleza." Él los transforma de "pescadores" a "pescadores de hombres." El Señor siempre mi-ra más allá del exterior para ver dentro del cora-zón, y él sabía que sus corazones eran buenos. A pesar de las fallas y debilidades que mostraban, Jesús creía en su amor por él. Así es con noso-tros.

Es fácil que sólo pensemos en nuestra falta de mérito cuando se trata de responder a la llamada del Señor a servir en diferentes capaci-dades dentro de su Iglesia. Es un gran consuelo saber que Dios elige a los débiles y los hace fuertes en servirle.

El Valor de las Circunstancias Ética y Moral

Las circunstancias en las que realizamos nuestros actos son importantes en orden a su valor moral... Las circunstancias son, pues, como los accidentes, importantes para la sustan-

cia tanto de las cosas como de los actos humanos en su aspecto moral, y le afectan más o menos profunda-

mente. Suelen señalarse las siguientes:

Lo Que Pueden Cambiar Las Circunstancias

"Algunas circunstancias mudan la especie moral o teoló-gica del acto". Así, el lugar del robo puede mudar la espe-

cie, haciendo que un robo simple se convierta en robo sacrílego (si se comete en una iglesia); los pecados contra

la castidad no tienen la misma especie moral según se cometan con uno mismo o con otra persona, y según su condición (por ejemplo, un casado o un soltero). Ciertas

circunstancias pueden cambiar también la especie teológi-ca (es decir, el carácter grave y leve de un pecado de la misma especie moral); por ejemplo: la cantidad robada

hace que el robo sea pecado venial o mortal; una injuria, por sus circunstancias, puede ser grave o leve. Todas las

circunstancias que mudan la especie moral o teológica del acto deben declararse expresamente en la confesión.

"En realidad, este tipo de circunstancias, aunque en senti-do físico son sólo accidentales, en sentido moral ya reba-san este carácter, y entran a formar parte del objeto o del fin. Así, el lugar sagrado, en el caso del robo sacrílego,

entra en la sustancia del acto, pues implica una nueva re-lación a la norma moral, y esto cambia esencialmente el

objeto. De ahí la obligación de confesarla. No es esencial-mente lo mismo una simple fornicación que un adulterio. Igualmente, cuando un motivo circunstancial pasa a ser la intención principal del acto, le da una moralidad esencial

que en otro caso no tendría" (3).

Es obvio que hay circunstancias que, moralmente, son irrelevantes; por ejemplo, la hora en que se asiste a Misa. Las que influyen en la moralidad del acto son las que aña-den una nueva conformidad o disconformidad con el or-

den de la razón.
