St. Aug Marching 100 Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Integrating Rex Parade
Focus on the music. That's the simple but profound advice that Dwight Fitch remembers hearing from legendary St. Augustine band director
Edwin Hampton in 1967. Hampton was preparing Fitch and other members of the school's Marching 100 band to make history by integrat-
ing the Rex parade, but he knew there could be resistance." Despite that, our focus would be on our music and our marching, to stay focused
on what we were doing," Fitch said. On Fat Tuesday, the Rex krewe will honor 20 former band members by having them ride on a float in
the Rex parade, appearing right before the current Marching 100. Fifty years ago, the band made history by integrating the Rex parade, be-
coming the first African-American high school band to perform in the historic parade. “The captain of the Rex Organization in those days,
Darwin Fenner, recognized that a band from an African-American school, and St. Augustine in particular, should be marching in the Rex
parade," said Rex official Christy Brown. "The leadership at Rex recognized it was time to include a black band in their parade," said current
St. Augustine president Kenneth St. Charles, who is also a graduate of the school and Marching 100 alumnus. "My whole time with the band
we were always taught that we could compete with anyone and the fact that the band was chosen to integrate the Rex parade validated that.
And we always felt pride that we led the way for all the other bands," St. Charles said. "Today we're celebrating not only that momentous
occasion in 1967 but also the relationship we've had over the past half century," Brown said, noting that St. Aug alternates its Fat Tuesday
appearances between Rex and Zulu each year.
St. Augustine was founded in 1951 but in just a decade or so, the band had already built a reputation for excellence, former band members
recalled. "It was a great honor to be chosen. When you think of Mardi Gras, you think of Rex for all intents and purposes. No other group of
color had ever done that before," said former band member Maurice Gourrier. He recalled that in 1967, the band also marched in the Freret
parade and the inaugural parade of the Krewe of Endymion, which at that time was a small Gentilly neighborhood parade. But it was Rex
that represented the pinnacle. The warnings from Hampton and other school leaders that not everyone would welcome the move were appro-
priate, since band members did encounter some negativity along the parade route, some alumni recalled. "There was beer being poured down
the sousaphones, people jeering, throwing things," said alumnus Dwight Fitch. "But there were also people who were crying tears of joy to
see there were some positive things happening in the city. Some people were elated that progress was being made and I give Rex a lot of
credit for that." Brown credited former St. Augustine president Oyd Craddock with bringing the upcoming anniversary to the krewe's atten-
tion. Plans to honor the occasion developed over time, with discussions between Rex leadership and St. Charles, who took over as the
school's leader last fall and will also ride in the parade. "Mardi Gras is a tremendously unifying event and we don't stop and think of all the
ways we are brought together as a community but certainly this has been one enduring way we have all been brought together," Brown said.
The St. Augustine alumni will be throwing special commemorative cups to mark the anniversary and will be riding on the Rex Calliope float,
which normally features a recorded version of the Rex anthem, "If Ever I Cease to Love." "This year that music will be replaced by the
sound of the Marching 100, which we think is the right way to go," Brown said.
Second Collection: The second collection this weekend is for the

ing.
