St. Ignatius Catholic Church presents a night with Father Tim
Ferguson on the life and ministry of Marquette’s first bishop,
Venerable Bishop Frederic Baraga:
“The One Necessary Thing.”
Fr. Tim Ferguson is the Director of the Marygrove Retreat center.
He will share many fascinating details of our own “Snowshoe
Priest’s” life and ministry! He is a delightful speaker and will engage you in this interesting topic.
Venerable Frederic Baraga, the first Bishop of our diocese, died over 150 years
ago, yet his example of holiness, courage, dedication, and compassion have left a
lasting mark on the hearts of the faithful. What motivated this holy man to leave the comforts of his native Slovenia for the untamed wilderness of the Upper Great
Lakes?
Fr. Tim will lead us through Bishop Baraga’s life and ministry and point out the
meaning behind his motto: “Unum est Necessarium.” (taken from the Gospel of Luke 10:42). Through the example of Venerable Bishop Baraga’s life in the face
of hardships and adversity we may learn “the one necessary thing” we need to
change our lives for the better.

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE
Bibianne Bessette Scholarship Looking for financial assistance with your college
education? Applications are now being accepted for the 2019
Year! The scholarships aid graduating high school seniors who
are pursuing a college or vocational education at an accredited
degree granting institution. Consideration is based on academic
achievement. Applicants must complete the on-line application
found at http://www.dioceseofmarquette.org/bbscholarshiplink
and either mail an Official Transcript and ACT/SAT scores (via
postal mail) to: Bessette Scholarship Fund, Diocese of
Marquette, 1004 Harbor Hills Drive, Marquette, MI 49855 or
email transcripts to Irene McCauley at imccauley@diocese-
ofmarquette.org. Applications must be received no later than
March 15, 2019.
Adeline M. LaChapelle Scholarship Women (senior high school and above) who are active in their
faith and are seeking further academic education or schooling in a
trade are eligible for the Adeline M. LaChapelle Scholarship.
The deadline to apply is June 1, 2019. If you are interested
applications are at the entrances of the church. A referral letter
from Fr. John is required. Please get your request in to Father by
April 15. Applications are due at the main branch of Superior
National Bank in Hancock by June 1.
The Wesley-Jones Foundation will award multiple scholar-
ships worth up to $3,000 to Christian students. In a typical year
the Foundation makes 8-12 awards of $1,000 to $3,000 each.
The essential requirement is that the students be actively involved
in Christian activities in local churches or on campus. Because
we want students to have established a track record in this area,
students must, at minimum, already be enrolled and approaching
the end of their freshman year or later. Applica-tions are due by
March 31. Campus Christian organizations, churches with
campus ministries or churches who wish to sponsor activities that
will involve Michigan Tech or Finlandia University students are
all eligible to apply. Application forms for both programs are
available at the following website: www.cs.mtu.edu/-zlwang/
wesley-jones/forms.html.
The Richard and Clara Fedewa Scholarship is available to
female high school graduates who are members of the St.
Ignatius Parish seeking to further their education at a university,
college or trade school. Awards are based on academic
achievement, need and parish/community involvement.
Application forms are available at St. Ignatius or online:
www.keweenawgives.org For more information call 906/482-
9673. Application deadline is May 1, 2019. Return your
application to: Keweenaw Community Foundation

as a parish. The new cars will be turned in on
the weekend of April 7th.
