BULLETIN COVER

The Adoration of the Magi

Fra Angelico (1440) and Fra Filippo Lippi (1460)

In Renaissance Florence, the Feast of Epiphany was celebrated in grand style on the 6th of January with elaborate pageants sponsored by the ruling Medici family. This feast observes the recognition of the Christ Child by the Magi, or the secular world. For the Medici family, the Feast of Epiphany also symbolized the conjoining of their secular wealth and power with their Catholic faith. The Medici family commissioned some of the most beautiful artwork of the Italian Renaissance. Fra Angelico, a devout Dominican, a was commissioned to paint The Adoration of the Magi, which was left unfinished in 1440. Twenty years later, Fra Filippo Lippi, a lapsed Carmelite, was commissioned to complete the painting. What is special about The Adoration of the Magi is the way that it seamlessly combines the styles of the two artists. The delicate, stylized depiction of Mary's face is a hallmark of Fra Angelico's work, and the more realistic, modeled depiction of St. Joseph's face by Fra Filippo Lippi shows the development of humanism in Renaissance art. This painting is in a tondo or round shape, which format was often used for images of the Madonna and Child in Italian Renaissance art. The Adoration of the Magi is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

WELLESLEY FOOD

PANTRY

"We must not seek the child Jesus in the pretty figures of our Christmas cribs. We must seek him among the undernourished children who have gone to bed at night with nothing to eat ..." (Archbishop Oscar Romero) This weekend (1/5 – 1/6) is the first weekend of January and we are collecting canned fruit and laundry detergent for the Wellesley Food Pantry. Let us not forget that while we were celebrating during the holidays there were many in our community, not starving, but who are having difficulty just getting along. Thank you for your help and concern. As always the Wellesley Food Pantry thanks St Paul parishioners for their consistent generosity. "A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor." Proverbs 22:9

From the time that we were young kids growing up in Dorchester receiving First Communion, through our marriage, as we brought up our own four boys, and now as grandparents, Boston priests have been a guiding light that we reach out to in different situations that have come up in our lives. As parents, our faith life has helped us to guide our family. We are an ordinary family, and, like all families, things don’t always go smoothly. The priests we have known through the years, like Fr. Peter Martocchio, have helped us to learn to take things in stride and put our faith in God, and that there is always hope. While not perfect, ours has been a wonderful life, which has been enriched by many Boston priests who have helped us along the way.
