Pastor’s Desk Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On this Pentecost weekend, I will be co-directing a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat in Kearny. Please pray that the post-abortive men and women who will be part of this experience may find reconciliation with God, the Church, their children, and themselves! The Office of Clergy Personnel has advised that Fr. Tony will be reassigned on June 22nd to Immaculate Conception Church in Montclair, to assist the pastor who will also become temporary administrator of neighboring Mount Carmel parish there. Archbishop Myers has assured me that he will send another priest to St. John’s, most likely a soon to be ordained priest. We wish Fr. Tony well in his new assignment, and I am especially grateful for his having reintroduced the Communal Anointing of the Sick Masses in our parish with the assistance of our Cornerstone members. Also, Fr. Jonathan has been appointed an Associate Vocations Director in addition to his parochial duties here at St. John’s. Sometime in June, we expect to also welcome Fr. Godfrey Bamuganyire to our parish for a summer visit. Unlike the series of Filipino priests who also spoke Spanish who have visited for so many years, Fr. Godfrey is coming from Uganda, where he is the pastor of a very large parish and has only one assistant. He is pastor to about 30,000 Catholics in 31 outstation churches, with the farthest being 30 miles away from the central Holy Trinity parish. This week, the bishop will be coming to his parish to confirm 400 candidates and to bless the marriages of 60 couples. Fr. Godfrey will either be coming earlier in the month if his bishop is able to secure a scholarship for him for further studies in Rome, or later in June if he will be returning to his parish. Either way, it will be a good vacation for him and a blessing for our parish. We are currently investigating the cost of repairs to the chapel roof and various exterior lintels on the parish life center to prevent further water penetration into the building. These, of course, are unanticipated expenses in terms of our budget, although not unexpected given the age of some of our buildings.

Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor

Reflection on Today’s Readings

Have you seen the Holy Spirit or felt the Spirit’s presence? Many of our parishioners have, as they are inspired to volunteer in our parish catechetical program, help in feeding the homeless, give gifts for the Christmas Giving Tree, get involved in prayer groups, societies, ministries, and organizations, or find personal ways to share their faith with others. By paying attention to each person, these sisters and brothers speak to them in a tongue that they can understand and help them experience the mighty acts of God. The Spirit renews the face of the earth. We were given the Holy Spirit in Baptism, sealed with the Spirit in Confirmation, and pray to become “one body, one spirit in Christ” in the Eucharistic Prayer. We did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but the spirit of adoption that gives freedom to live as children of God. When afraid, cry out for confidence. When weak, cry out for strength. Pray, “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,” set me on fire for people to see you today through me. “Come, Holy Spirit, heal us, bend us, melt us, and free us to make you known so that we can set the world on fire with your love. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.” John 14: 26

The materialism of our society lures us to concentrate more on what we want than on what God wants for us. The relativism of our world tells us that we should be tolerant of all things, that there is no absolute truth. Pray to the Holy Spirit to put the right words in our mouths when challenged about our faith.

The Fullness of the Holy Spirit The Church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the “birthday of the Church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today’s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit?
