Merry Christmas! On behalf of Fr. Keith, Deacon Dave, our seminarians, and the parish staff, I would like to wish all of you and your loved ones a very Merry and Blessed Christmas. As we celebrate the birth of our Lord, the cause of our joy, I hope that the following words of Pope St. John Paul II from the Christmas of 2003 will help us have a deeper sense of awe and joy. In Christ, Fr. Matt 1. Descendit de caelis Salvator mundi. Gaudeamus! The Saviour of the world has come down from heaven. Let us rejoice! This proclamation, filled with deep rejoicing, echoed in the night of Bethlehem. Today the Church re-news it with unchanged joy: the Saviour is born for us! A wave of tenderness and hope fills our hearts, together with an overpowering need for closeness and peace. In the crib we contemplate the One who stripped himself of divine glory in order to become poor, driven by love for mankind. Beside the crib the Christmas tree, with its twin-kling lights, reminds us that with the birth of Jesus the tree of life has blossomed anew in the desert of humanity. The crib and the tree: precious symbols, which hand down in time the true meaning of Christmas! 2. In the heavens there echoes the proclamation of the angels: "To you is born in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord" (Lk 2:11). What wonder! By be-ing born in Bethlehem, the Eternal Son of God has en-tered into the history of each person living on the face of the earth. He is now present in the world as the one Sav-iour of humanity For this reason we pray to him: Saviour of the world, save us! 3. Save us from the great evils which rend humanity in these first years of the third millennium. Save us from the wars and armed conflicts which lay waste whole areas of the world, from the scourge of terrorism and from the many forms of violence which assail the weak and the vulnerable. Save us from discouragement as we face the paths to peace, difficult paths indeed, yet possible and therefore necessary; paths which are always and every-where urgent, especially in the Land where You were born, the Prince of Peace. 4. And you, Mary, the Virgin of expectation and fulfil-ment, who hold the secret of Christmas, make us able to recognize in the Child whom you hold in your arms the heralded Saviour, who brings hope and peace to all. With you we worship him and trustingly say: we need You, Redeemer of man, You who know the hopes and fears of our hearts. Come and stay with us, Lord! May the joy of your Nativity reach to the farthest ends of the universe!

Del parte de Padre Keith, Diácono David, nuestros seminaristas y el personal de la par-roquia, me gustaría desearles a todos ustedes y sus queridos una Feliz Navidad. Al celebrar el naci-miento de nuestro Señor, la causa de nuestra alegría, espero que las siguientes palabras del San Juan Pablo II de la Navidad de 2003 nos ayuden a
obtener un sentido más profundo de gozo y alegría.
En Cristo, Padre Mateo 1. Descendit de caelis Salvator mundi. Gaudeamus! Bajó del cielo el Salvador del mundo. ¡Alegrémonos! Este anuncio, lleno de un profundo gozo, resonó en la noche de Belén. Hoy la Iglesia lo reitera con alegría inmutable: ¡Ha nacido para nosotros el Salvador! Una ola de ternura y esperanza nos llena el ánimo, junto con una profunda necesidad de intimidad y paz. En el pesebre contemplamos a Aquél que se despojó de la gloria divina para hacerse pobre, movido por el amor al hombre. Junto al pesebre, el árbol de Navidad con el centelleo de sus luces, nos recuerda que con el nacimiento de Jesús florece de nuevo el árbol de la vida en el desierto de la humanidad. El pesebre y el árbol: símbolos preciosos, que transmiten a lo largo del tiempo el verdadero sentido de la Navidad. 2. Resuena en el cielo el anuncio de los ángeles: "En la ciudad de David, os ha nacido un salvador, que es el Cristo Señor" (Lc 2,11). ¡Qué asombro! Naciendo en Belén, el Hijo eterno de Dios entró en la historia de cada persona que vive sobre la faz de la tierra. Ya está presente en el mundo como único Salvador de la humanidad. Por esto nosotros le pedimos: Salvator mundi, salva nos! 3. Sálvanos de los grandes males que afligen a la humanidad al inicio del tercer milenio. Sálvanos de las guerras y de los conflictos armadas que devastan regiones enteras del globo; sálvanos de la plaga del terrorismo y de las numerosas formas de violencia que torturan a personas débiles e inermes. Sálvanos del desánimo para emprender los caminos de la paz, ciertamente difíciles, pero posibles y por tanto obligados; caminos apremiantes, siempre y doquier, sobre todo en la tierra donde naciste tú, Príncipe de la Paz. 4. Y tú, María, Virgen de la espera y del cumplimiento, que conservas el secreto de la Navidad, haznos capaces de reconocer en el Niño, que estrechas en tus brazos, al Salvador anunciado, que trae a todos la esperanza y la paz. ADORATION REQUEST
We need parishioners who are able to commit to spending one hour each week in the chapel at St. John the Baptist. Especially needed are ador-ers to cover the night hours weekly from 10:00 P.M. Tuesday thru 7:00 on Wednesday morning. Most urgently needed is someone to cover 1a to 2a.
It is a wonderful way to experience the silence and peace of the Lord’s presence as we keep watch before the Blessed Sacrament. As Jesus says to his disci-ples in the garden of Gethsemane in Mark 14:37, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour”? Please contact Arlene Reichert at: 1-630-890-2857.

Make a friend, be a friend, bring a friend to Christ Ultreya- January 12 Saint John the Baptist will host an Ultreya in Sebahar Hall on Saturday, January 12 following 8:30 am Mass in the chap-el. The witness speaker will be Bernadette Borgard from St. Joseph parish in Downers Grove.

cess for attending a future weekend.
1-Year Anniversary for SJB Ultreya A team of Saint John the Baptist Cursillistas took a leap of faith a year ago and brought the monthly Ultreya to our par-ish. These Ultreya’s have been a success from the start with the first Ultreya hosting 50 Cursillistas from surrounding parishes. The Joliet Diocese now hosts a total of 5 Ultreyas, each on different weekends, throughout the month.
Many thanks to Adele Dunn, Kathy Johnston, Leslie Malik, Diane Smurzlo, Amy Serritella and Judy Valentine, who coordinate all aspects of the Ultreya each month, including hospitality, communication, and selection of speakers.
Men’s 137th Rector Announced John Krzystofiak has been discerned and agreed to be the Rector of the Men’s 137th Cursillo Weekend. The Weekend will be held Thursday, March 7th through Sunday evening, March 10th, 2019 at the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien. John and his wife Barbara are members of St. Walter parish in Roselle. John made his Weekend in 1994 and has worked in many capacities on numerous Weekend teams. John is “honored and humbled” to be leading this Weekend team and he has stated that he plans to “let go and let God” take over. Formation meetings for the Men’s 137th we be held Sunday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. at St. Walter in Roselle in Wagner Hall. If you feel called to work on this Weekend Team, are able to commit to the meetings, and are in Group Reunion, please pray about joining John’s team. MEMORIES AND DREAMS
Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travel-ling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pro-nouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord’s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. The memories of her people are alive in her, and memories of her nourish our own living faith.

Update about our Paper Recycling Bin behind School Originally when the paper recycling bin was placed behind the school, it was going to be a school fundraiser; we would get money back from the paper put in there. However, many years ago, the company said there’s not enough money generated from paper recycling to give rebates. Thus, we are not receiving money for the recycling and is not a fundraiser any longer. Therefore, we kindly ask if you could please use your own home recycling for paper.

People are invited to bring bottles of wine to the 7:50 a.m. Mass on December 27th for a blessing following the Mass. The benedictio vini is done on this day in memory of St. John, who without det-riment drank poisoned wine. Because the blessing is from the Roman Ritual, the 7:50 a.m. Mass will be the tradition-al Latin Mass. Booklets will be provided.

Yes, even Jesus talked about mon-ey because money is a necessary part of our lives and it is also a necessary part of the viability of the church. Our tithe is merely a way to recognize that. Each family should prayerfully discern their own situation and understand that tithing is God’s plan for supporting the church and the poor. As a reminder to our parishioners, all contributions to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church must be received at the parish office or be postmarked by De-cember 31 in order for those contributions to be credited to you on your 2018 parish contribution statement.
If you attend Mass on December 31, checks dated 12/31 will be included on the 2018 statement. If they are dated January 1, they will be posted to the 2019 statement. Our Spiritual Adoption Program
Prayer is the best and most effective weapon to help.
For the past nine months, we described our spiritually-adopted baby’s development. Partic-ipants in the Spiritual Adoption Program pledged to pray daily for nine months for a baby in danger of abortion, and for the biological parents who are contemplating abortion, that they will respond to God's grace and welcome their child into life.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY – SPIRTUALLY ADOPTED BABY Your spiritually adopted baby was born this month - - nine months after baby’s mother conceived. The only change at birth is a change in the external life support system of the baby. Baby is no different now than before birth except that baby breathes and eats differently. Our baby is truly a miracle who began as a 46-chromosome cell and has developed over the past nine months into this unique human being. Never before in history, nor ever again, will anyone exist who is just like your spiritually adopted baby. Your prayers saved this baby’s life. Thank you on behalf of all of the little ba-bies that you cared enough to pray for and the moms and dads.

You have become one of us -- You have become a human being, while still retaining all your power and holiness as God!
You, O Lord, made the journey of the unborn child. By being an embryo, a fetus, and a newborn, you joined all unborn and newborn children to you!
From the beginning of history, O Lord, You were the Creator of every human life. Now, with Christmas, You join Yourself in an unthinkable way with the life You created.
Let this Christmas, O God, fill all of us with awe and wonder at how close human life is to You. Cleanse the world of all that tarnishes and rejects this gift. Purify our hearts of all that fears this gift.
Let our Christmas joy be the joy of welcoming every human life! Amen!
Our First Annual Nativity Scene Display the first weekend in December was beautiful! There were 45 Nativity Scenes displayed in the mezzanine of our School Hall. Father Keith blessed them all after the 5p Mass on Saturday. During the Knights of Columbus pancake breakfast and after Sunday Masses, parishioners were able to view all the scenes that were displayed. Thank you to our Catholics for Life volunteers who put it all together for our parish: Linda LeBreux, Rita Grabowski, Maureen Kiely, Maureen Brennan and Val Ward. If you’d like to participate next year, please look for bulletin announcements beginning in November for our Second Annual Nativity Scene display! It was a lovely way to start Advent!
SACRAMENTAL INFORMATION Baptisms Baptisms usually held at two Masses each month, and two Saturdays. Parents need to be registered parishioners and parents and godparents will need to attend a Baptism Preparation Class prior to the Baptism. Godparents are to be practicing Catholics! This is the time when questions are answered and formation begins. Grief Support Group Our Grief Support Group offers emotional support for those grieving a loss - whether by death, divorce, or other significant event in their lives.
