Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Now that the pre-Election debate season has begun, we will be providing inserts each week from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on “Faithful Citizenship.” Please read and reflect on them. In their statement on “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”, the U.S. Catholic Bishops remind Catholics about the call to participate in political life. “In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation.” Visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org today to read the statement in its entirety, watch videos, and access other great resources.

Several parishioners regularly phone the rectory about the priests’ Mass schedule, recognizing the different preaching and celebration styles which each of us have. In the hope of reducing the number of phone calls on our already busy rectory phone lines, we will publish the following weekend’s schedule in the bulletin. Of course, sometimes last minute changes may make this a bit dated, but let’s see how it goes.

I am so grateful to parishioners who have made pledges and who continue to make pledges to our We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign and the Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal. If you have not yet made a pledge and are willing to make one or at least a one-time gift, please use the special envelopes in the church for the Annual Appeal or contact me at the rectory for the Capital Campaign. The current figures are:

We Are Living Stones Capital Campaign $790,076 pledged—75.49% of goal of $1,066,452 Sharing God’s Blessings Annual Appeal $79,119 pledged—85% of goal of $92,953

Reflection on Today’s Readings

When someone is invited to participate in Mass or join a club or volunteer for a parish or civic activity, many times they will say, “What will I get out of it?” Fortunately, this is not God’s question. God freely plants the seed of faith within us and offers forgiveness to all. When we accept these gifts, whether our faith seems small or great, we are simply doing what is expected of us as servants of God. A side benefit can be “getting” satisfaction for being faithful to the baptismal promise we make to live Jesus. Satisfaction can grow into an attitude of gratitude.

Habakkuk reminds us that God’s time is not our time. God’s vision “will surely come.” It has its own time, “presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint.” Like watching a pot of water, we cannot make it boil any faster. Nor can we make a seed planted into the ground grow any faster, even with modern technological assistance. God’s vision and the seed of faith planted within us have their own time. We can tend them, nurture them, watch them, and stir into flame the gift God has given us, but we cannot force when their fulfillment will come. When we live God’s vision with patience, we do what we promised at baptism. God’s will has its time. So, to paraphrase St. Francis de Sales, be patient, most of all, with yourself. What will you get out of it? The satisfaction of knowing we are servants who have done what we are obliged to do, and we just might find God’s vision fulfilled where we least expect.

“Generous God, you have planted the gift of faith in our hearts. Help me trust that the faith I have will be enough whether life is easy or difficult. Stir that gift into a flame that sets the world on fire with the light of your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!

“For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1: 7

Many of us compartmentalize our Faith, we bring it out only when we attend Mass or when we attend a parish event. Being a good steward requires discipline and striving to put God first in everything, all the time. The next time you are at a neighborhood party, at work or out shopping, would your actions signal to others that you are a good and faithful servant of the Lord?
