All of us have a profound ability to be like the prodigal son. A key line in today’s parable is the one that states: “While he was still a long way off – his father saw him and was moved with pity.” Jesus presents this parable to show us God’s limitless love for us – even though our actions may call for less than a loving response. He is there waiting to welcome us into His arms whenever we are ready to return to Him.

4TH SUNDAY OF LENT
First Reading: Josiah 5:9a, 10-12 “Reproach of Egypt” may refer to circumcision. The people celebrate the Passover, here an older version that did not include the sacrifice of the lamb.
Second Reading: II Corinthians 5:17-21 Paul tells his readers that not only has God reconciled humanity to Himself, but He has also en-trusted the reconciling mission of Christ to us.
Gospel: Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 This is perhaps Our Lord’s greatest parable. It illustrates several lessons, above all the forgiveness of the father for his younger son’s waywardness and his older son’s self-righteousness.
REFLECTION by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
Without knowing what Christ’s contemporaries might have called it, we have given His famous story at least two titles: “The Prodigal Son” and “The Loving Father.” Each name highlights the focus of the reader. The first title, the more familiar one, follows the wastrel son on his life’s journey downward, as he breaks every rule regarding respect and religion. The second title, less known but equally accu-rate, regards the beauty of a father’s love for both sons, including the dutiful but conceited older son, who accuses the father of second hand treatment.
But here is where I make my case for yet another title for this beloved story. I call it “The X-Ray Par-able.” Now, we all know what an x-ray examination is: a photo of our bodily interior that aids the doctor in diagnosing our medical problem. He can see what’s out of sync with us; what’s going on inside us that lies hidden beneath the outside. This parable does the same for our souls.
If we imagine the father in the story to be God the Father, and the prodigal son as ourselves at times, we readily get the meaning: we are every bit the sinner who disregards God’s love and takes various paths of waywardness. Our disregard for all that we pledged at our baptism through our godparents and have ignored later as adults comes to the fore. The parable’s x-ray awakens us to see it on the imaginary screen.
This examination process isn’t complete until we realize that we are also the elder son at times. His difficulty combines envy and jealousy. We have felt those, if we’re honest. Someone’s financial suc-cess makes our own look paltry. Someone else’s beauty overshadows ours. Maybe their car makes ours look ready for the junkyard.
The parable x-ray reveals something else akin to the elder son’s warped thinking. Have you ever caught yourself thinking like this: “I go to Mass every Sunday and holyday. I keep the rules. How come God sends me this illness? Why has my loved one died? How come I got laid off from work?” This is self-righteousness. And if your spiritual x-ray shows signs of it, you know what changes you have to make; what Lenten penance you must do.
Looked at positively, this parable of Jesus is perhaps best thought of as a gift of the Church. As the guardian of Scripture, the Church has preserved this story over the ages to help us see what it is that is holding us back from becoming saints. The gospel, which includes more than this famous parable, is, after all, the best medicine for what ails us spiritually. Making the necessary corrections here on earth, while we still can, is the surest way we can guarantee our entrance to that heavenly kingdom which is our baptismal inheritance.
So it seems best to use this Lenten opportunity to take Our Lord’s story to heart. In other words, an opportunity to accept what our spiritual x-ray shows about our souls, and take the cure. As an anony-mous someone once wrote: “The door of opportunity is opened by pushing.”
