The last two deadly sins that lure us into being trapped in a vicious cycle of evil is the temptations of “Gluttony” and “Lust” - the Deadly Sins of “excess”. We want more. With gluttony we can’t get enough of something. We want more food, more alcohol, more movies, more television, more internet, more exercise, etc… to the point that the pleasure God planted within these goods are distorted. With lust we give into uncontrollable desires; desires for sexual pleasure, for money, for fame or even for power. Again, the graces God planted within these goods are distorted. Gluttony and Lust end up leading us down paths of ungodliness. We simply want more and more and more. This Palm Sunday we are reminded that Jesus emptied himself and took the form of a slave to be of human estate and obediently excepted death, death on the cross (Phil 2:7). Instead of giving into the temptations of excess, let us enter into this Holy Week empting ourselves. Let us be more disciplined in how we treat the blessings of things and of people that God has surrounded us with. It is not about more or about doing with less; it is about balance, it is about stability, it is about being steady with what God has given us. For when we empty ourselves and see all that is around us as grace filled gifts given to us by God, we can not help but to treasure, rather than abuse, that which we have. Money, food, drink, movies, television, internet, exercise, intimacy, money, fame and/or power are all gifts in themselves. Let us empty ourselves, take the form of a slave to God and be driven to cherish everything for what it is – grace filled gifts.

DO WE NEED MORE?

Stewardship Thought In the Gospel story of the first Palm Sunday, we hear that

the owners of the ass had only to be told, “The Master has need of it,” to give the animal gladly. Do I give as readily to

the Lord’s work?

See Luke 19:34

Please remember in your daily prayers the sick and suffer-ing of our parish family.

Busy in the Office—Help out

by Using Online Giving! You can probably tell from just

the church bulletin that we get pretty busy this time of year! Ho-

ly Week, Easter, First Communion, etc. You can help us out

by using Online Giving instead of giving by envelope. Did you know church staff spend approximately an hour and

half processing checks/cash contributions every week, but it only takes 15 minutes to keep tabs on what we receive

online? That’s because online gifts go directly from your bank account to ours… no physical processing required!

Online Giving is secure and easy for you to use. Just look

for the link on our www.stjudepearl.org

Jubilee Year of Mercy

March 20, 2016 Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

Misericordiae Vultus: The Face of Mercy is Pope Francis’ official decree announcing

this Jubilee Year of Mercy.

But Francis had already declared that Je-sus “has shown the face of God’s mercy”

back in 2013 on his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis described Luke’s account of

Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem: “Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air. Jesus

has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the

simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human

sufferings . . . has bent down to heal body and soul.” Enter-ing Jerusalem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis con-

tinued, at our sicknesses and sins. “A beautiful scene, full of light—the light of the love of Jesus” (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday homily, March 24, 2013). May this Jubilee Year’s Holy Week and Triduum make us Jesus’ own light-bearers and love-givers to all who long to see the Face of Mercy. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. "Almost every building on campus was inundated with about two feet of water, including our classrooms, resi-dence hall, Woodworks, gift shop, library, monastery, monastery refectory, and the basement of the Abbey church, which houses all the electrical work and air conditioning equipment. It's going to be a long recov-ery. Even as countless others are reeling from the dev-astating effects of the flood, many still have asked how they can help. The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming," said Abbot Justin Brown, O.S.B. You can visit www.saintjosephabbey.com/donate/ for more information on how to help.
