Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaid-ed. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word In-carnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

On Sundays, holy days of obligation, and solemnities, the people stand after the homily and make the Profession of Faith. This is also known as the Creed because the first word is Credo, which means “I believe” in Latin. Typically we recite the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, which capsulizes the dogmatic formulations of the Council of Nicea (325 AD) and those of Constantinople (381). It is simply called the Nicene Creed. When confirmation students are present at Mass, the people can recite the shorter and more ancient creed known as the Apostles’ Creed. The Apostles’ Creed has 12 articles of faith. We stand for the Creed to show respect and attention for what we believe and also to honor all martyrs who died for these beliefs. If you are ever confused about what you believe as a Catholic, or if anyone ever asks you what you believe, you can simply recite the Nicene Creed for them.

Thank you to the Parishioners of St.. Laurence. Your kindness and thoughtful expressions of well wishes are most appreciative. You are truly Gifts from God. As I tell everyone I am not leaving the parish just the the office. I hope to see you at one of the many functions and of course at Mass. Connie Sajtar

WEAK OR STRONG? Is your faith weak or strong? Most of us have moments in which our answer could simply be “Yes!” Faith is not a once-and-for-all thing. Our faith ebbs and flows, along with changes in life circumstances, as we mature and grow in relationship with Christ and with one another. Pope Francis speaks to this in The Joy of the Gospel, when he encourages us to be open to an encounter with God’s love daily. In these encoun-ters, like the one that the people in the synagogue had with Jesus in today’s Gospel, we may be astonished at God’s love and are invited to accept it. Weakness in faith is not always the result of some failure on our part. We may simply be at a crossroads, at which we cannot clearly see or understand what comes next. It is at such a time that we step out in blind faith with the assurance that God’s love awaits us in every moment. The opposite of strong faith may not be weakness, but rather misplac-ing faith by relying on ourselves, our material possessions, or others. When we think we can do things on our own, we leave little room for God in our lives. When we develop a false sense of security that is rooted in material things, our trust in Jesus is quite shallow. Growing in faith calls us to rely on God’s great goodness above all things. When we open our minds and hearts and allow ourselves to be astonished at the love and life found in Jesus Christ, we realize that we do not need to rely on ourselves. Saint Paul teaches us a very important lesson about this in his second letter to the Corinthians, in which we hear, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”

EXPLORING THE CATECHISM From Why Catholic- The Profession of Faith

As human beings, we often ask questions such as: Where do I come from? Where am I going? What kind of meaning does my life have? Who is God? How does he work in my life and in our world? As Catholics, we believe that the desire for God is written in the hu-man heart because God creates us and constantly draws us to deeper communion. There is within each person an internal desire for God, a deep yearning for the holy. Luke 12 32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treas-ure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. We are religious beings who have in so many ways throughout the centuries given expression to our quest for God in...religious beliefs and behavior: in...prayers, sacrifices, rituals, meditations, and so forth. But sometimes this “intimate and vital bond...to God” can be forgot-ten, overlooked or rejected by people. Yet no matter how much we forget or reject him, God never ceases to seek us out to show us the true ways to happiness.

"I once took a mission trip to a little country in Africa called Burkina Faso. During this trip I attended mass at a tiny local parish where food, water, proper housing and clothes were scarce. These people had little to nothing to their names. Twenty minutes prior to mass I noticed people showing up in the nicest, most elegant clothes to attend the mass, and not only were they dressed so beautifully but also this tiny parish was filled to the brim, so much so that people were peering through the blinds of the windows wanting to see the mass. After mass one women told me that they specifically have one outfit for when they see God at church, and that they give God their best because this hour of mass is the best hour of their week. I was amazed at how much these people recognized that seeing God was the greatest gift they had. Next time you go to church ask yourself if you desire God so much that you are willing to give Him the best you have because when we give God our best, He can then guide us closer to His heart through the greatest hour of our week which is the mass. It is in this hour giving God the best that we have that He will then open our hearts and show us why we exist!"
