Remember O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaid-ed. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration. Now it is generally accepted that worship places need accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps even an assisted hearing system or signing in American Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely English translated into movement, but a distinct language with its own gram-mar, syntax (word order), and vocabulary. For this reason, the American Cath-olic bishops have approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official language of the liturgy. Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular) means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this weekend in some places in total silence, but with the full partici-pation of deaf people praising God in the movements of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disability, and that there may well be people in your parish who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them in ASL. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Kid’s Corner

School News - Wendy Kelly

While the weather hasn’t been cooperative lately, we still were able to enjoy a celebration of all that makes Catholic Schools special recently! In addition to this, we took part in the Great Kindness Challenge. St. Laurence joined 13 million students in over 110 countries in a challenge that invites students to create a culture of kindness. In a world that is often filled with negativ-ity, small acts of kindness can be a game changer! Throughout the week, we participated in an all-school STEM challenge, created and shared positive post it’s with St. Edward HS students, created kindness banners and delivered them to our deanery Catholic schools, enjoyed a Portillo’s lunch from our PTC, had visitors in to share their vocation, shared smiles and created thank you cards for our volunteers. A huge thank you goes to everyone who helped organize our wonderful celebration! Also, I’d like to thank everyone who organized and those who supported our Valentine’s Bingo event! It was a huge success!! As we enter the time of year that families begin to consider their options for a school that is a best fit for their child, we invite you to share the good news about St. Laurence! Every day is an Open House...I’d love to meet you and show you around! I hope everyone has a blessed week!!

The Southeast window continued: The center lancet shows the Immaculate Conception of the blessed Virgin Mary, patroness of the United States. St. John wrote "And a great sign appeared in Heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars." According to the book of Genesis, Satan appeared as a serpent. After the sin of Adam and Eve, God punished them, but at the same time promised, "I will put enmities between thee and the woman and they seed and her seed: she shall crush thee head." In the lower part beneath the main figure is a rose, the symbol of Divine Love, rep-resenting the Mother of Christ. In the left side lancet of this window is present the Annunciation. Mary humbly kneeling, listens to the message of the Archangel Gabriel and speaks the words which change the course of human history, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according the Thy worked." Above he is a dove, symbolizing the Holy Spirit and the word spoken by the Angel, "The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee." The right side lancet depicts the nativity. In the stable of Bethlehem, we see the Divine Child lying on straw in the manger. The Blessed Mother is taking care of her Son. St. Joseph looks on with love and worship. The shepherds come to adore the newborn Christ. The beam of heavenly light coming from a star indicates the origin of the Divine Child. These windows donated: In Memory of the Michael P. Harris family.

Vocations Corner- Fr. Robert Gonnella

As a priest, people often want to know about the point in my life when I heard “the call”. The truth is that I heard the Lord calling at different times throughout my life, but I did not decide to heed His call until my last year in college. It was, of course, exciting to start following God’s path for me in my life, but it was also scary at times. One of the things I was most scared of was not knowing how my friends would react when I told them what I was going to do. I was scared that my friends might make fun of me or maybe even not want to be friends with me anymore. As is turned out, most of my friends were very supportive and hap-py for me. However, there were a few times when people did not understand and even said some hurtful things. Even though it was painful at the time, I can look back on it now and see that even those painful moments were part of God’s plan for me. In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus re-minds us that we will indeed have times when we have to suffer because we are His disciples. However, we should not shy away from those mo-ments. Rather, Jesus tells us that we should see ourselves as blessed in those times when we can carry that Cross with Him. We should always remember that we are His disciples, and the disciple is never greater than the Master. People mocked Jesus, and we may have to suffer mockery at times as well. However, we can always be comforted by the fact that Jesus never abandons us in our suffering. If you afraid of following God’s will for you because of what others might think, be comforted by this Gospel passage. Do not shy away from suffering for the Name of Jesus, but rather count yourself as blessed when you are treated poorly because you are His disciple. Be faithful to Jesus Christ, and He will never let you go.
