Lord, Hear our Prayer.

This is the height of vacation season, but as anyone who has ever been to Rome in the summer knows, no time to visit there! The city is swelter-ing, and in a pre-air-conditioned world long ago, Romans figured out that they needed a break in the surrounding hills. Even the pope clears out. His destination is usually Castelgandolfo, a lovely little hill town southeast of Rome, overlooking a tranquil lake. It has been a papal possession since about 1600, and in 1929, when most of the papal states were finally lost, the papal dwelling was given “extraterritorial rights,” meaning that it is an extension of Vatican City and not under Italian rule. The Vatican obser-vatory maintained telescopes here for decades, far from the glare of the city lights of Rome, but although the observatory offices remain here year round, the telescopes are in Arizona. Pope Francis spends less time here than his predecessors, though he still slows down the pace of his work in Rome. Vacations can help us visit friends and relatives, and revive those human contacts that the pace of our lives keeps us from cultivating. The pope needs a break, and so do you. Vacation comes from a word meaning to empty oneself. There’s still time to clear the calendar for at least one golden summer day even if you don’t have a personal castle in the hills! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The next seven lessons will be spent on the Eucharistic Prayer, and it would really help if you had a copy of the Eucharistic Prayers from your missalette, Daily Roman Missal, Magnificat, or mobile App so you can follow along. At this point of the Mass, everyone is invited to kneel. Well, at least in the United States. (In other countries – Spain, Italy, France, Mexico – the faithful stand until the consecration.) We kneel because something holy and miraculous is about to happen: the bread and wine will be changed into the Body and Blood of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There are four standard Eucharistic Prayers for daily Mass, plus sev-eral others for Masses of Reconciliation and in some countries, Eu-charistic Prayers for Masses with children. For these lessons, I will focus on Eucharistic Prayer I, also known as the ‘Roman Canon.’ The word “canon” in the liturgy means that the prayer is “fixed,” and is the same day in and day out with limited exceptions for Christmas and Easter time. The first Eucharistic Prayer – the Roman Canon – is the prayer that your parents, grandparents, and great-great-great-grandparents all the way back to 1570, would have followed in Latin at Mass. It was the same from the Council of Trent until the reform of the Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council. The Roman Canon is still basically the same except we now pray it in the vernacular (English) and we’ve added the name of St. Joseph to the Saints we commemorate at Mass.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul seeks the following: Volunteer Assistant Coordinators "Phone persons" to help manage our hotline. You would be responsible for retrieving messag-es from our answering service and assigning the calls to our lead volunteers. The time commitment is approximately one hour per day (depending on call volume) for two weeks at a time on a rotating basis with other coordinators. If you have been looking for a way to serve Our Lord, please prayerfully consider joining our confer-ence to help those in need in our community. Computer and basic computer skills required. Interested persons please e-mail Katrina at [email protected] Volunteer to help our Treasurer, Tony. Some knowledge of Quick Books and Excel would be helpful. The du-ties would consume about 4 hours of your time at your convenience per week. It does not involve contact with clients. Please prayerfully con-sider this opportunity. Email Lorraine Darr @ [email protected] for more information.

School News - Wendy Kelly

The St. Laurence Catholic School 2018-2019 school year began on an extremely ‘pawsitive’ note and we could not be more pleased! The students were all smiles and seemed to adapt quickly to their new teachers and class-rooms. On Wednesday, Father blessed our students’ backpacks to send them into the new school year assured of God’s promises and our support! Our two combined classes were separated and we welcomed two new teachers, Kathleen Schaefer in 4th and Patricia Wright in 5th to our school family. I am confident that they will prove to be wonderful members of our teaching team! I would also like to welcome all of our new families! Before our first day of school, the entire faculty and staff met to discuss the book The Power of a Positive Team by Jon Gordon. It is through truly working collectively toward a shared goal, that great things happen and we are continuing to see the fruits of our efforts. I would invite everyone in our parish community to read this book as well because you too are a part of our team. We are excited to share the many new additions in our technology department. In an effort to best prepare our students for a future that is filled with uncertainty, we continue to add tools to help our students gain 21st Century Skills. In doing so, however, our main focus is on the skills that will be enhanced and honed through the technology. In the book The Innovator’s Mindset, George Couros states that many schools are 21st Century Schools, but do not provide 21st Century Learning. The four C’s of 21st Century Learning are Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication and Creativity. Incorporating those skills will be the focus as we bring Virtual Re-ality glasses, a 3-D Printer, Google Classroom, and the Ipads into the classroom this year. It is truly an awesome time to be a Tiger! I hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed week!

Did You Know...

Save the Date Kid’s Corner

“God promises to make something good out of the storms that bring devastation to your life.” Romans 8:28

Religious Education

You cannot pray the Lord's Prayer and even once say "I". You cannot pray the Lord's Prayer and even once say "My". Nor can you pray the Lord's Prayer and not pray for another, for to ask for our daily bread, you include sister and brother. All God's children are included in each and every plea; from the beginning to the end of it, it does not once say "Me".

Page 7: St. Laurence Parish...2018/08/08  · St. Laurence Parish 225 Jewett St. Elgin, IL 60123 Parish Office:565 Standish St. 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM Monday - Friday P - 847-468-6900 F - 847-468-6904

There are things that we don’t like to do I don’t like to read, but I read every day. I don’t like to go to bed early, yet I go to bed at ten every day. I don’t like to wake up early, but I wake up early every day. I don’t like to exercise, yet I walk several miles every day. I do all these things be-cause I know they are good for me. I know that reading everyday helps me to be better prepare and serve other people; I know that by going to bed early I can rest and be ready for the next day; I know that waking up early helps me to be on time and fulfill my responsibilities; I know that a good routine of exercise keeps my body healthy even if I don’t always like it. There are things that we have to do even if we don’t like them. For some people prayer is one of those difficult things to do. How should I pray? Where to begin? Am I praying correctly? Is God really listening? Mass is the best prayer we can have, since it is the prayer of the same Jesus Christ on Calvary to the Father, so attending regularly to Mass and participating in it is a good way to begin. For somebody who never has prayed before, I would recommend starting doing a daily examination of conscience. It is as simple as at the end of the day think about the good things you have received from God on that day, and then reflect on the wrong things you have done and ask God’s forgiveness. At once you will be pray-ing to God, and knowing yourself better. Pray even if you don’t feel it. Pray even if you don’t like it. Pray God always listens. Pray, and then keep silence because we also need to hear God’s voice.

Vocations Corner- Fr. Kyle Manno
