WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Prelude Imagine the People of God Mark A. Miller

GATHERING

Invocation

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Opening Prayer O God, We gather together in your presence with expectation, hungry for an encounter with You, eager to hear your Word. Open our eyes and ears by the presence of your Holy Spirit. May the seeds of your Word scattered among us this morning fall on fertile soil. May they produce an abundant harvest of good works and deeds.

We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our teacher and our Lord. Amen.

Confession and Forgiveness

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

(we take a moment of silent reflection)

Merciful God, you made us in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But our knowledge is imperfect, our love inconstant, our obedience incomplete. Day by day we fail to grow in your likeness. In your tender love, forgive us, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

To all who turn from sin in sorrow, to all who turn to God in hope, this is God’s Word of grace: We are accepted, we are forgiven, we are loved. This gift we have from God. Thanks be to God!

Greeting

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray. Almighty God, we thank you for planting in us the seed of your word. By your Holy Spirit help us to receive it with joy, live according to it, and grow in faith and hope and love, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

WORD

First Reading Isaiah 55:10-13

10For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. 12For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. 13Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall be to the LORD for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

If you are at home, look around for something to use as a percussion instrument… if you are in the pews, you will find a shaker or rhythm sticks… or use your built-in body percussion - your hands and feet! Make some rhythm with your instruments… clap your hands… stomp your feet… to this beautiful arrangement to the text of Isaiah! Pr. Wayne will tickle the ivories along with us!

Gospel Acclamation

Gospel Matthew 13:1-13, 16-23

The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, the thirteenth chapter. Glory to you, O Lord.

1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. 2Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. 3And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. 4And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. 5Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. 6But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. 7Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9Let anyone with ears listen!”

10 Then the disciples came and asked him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 He answered, “To you it has been given to know the secrets[of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. 13 The reason I speak to them in parables is that ‘seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.’…

16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. 14 With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says:

17 Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.

‘You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look, but never perceive. 18“Hear then the parable of the sower. 19When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. 20As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. 22As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. 23But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon “Is this Sower an Idiot?” Pastor Wayne

Hymn of the Day Christ Taught Us of a Farmer AURELIA 7.6.7.6 D ("The Church's One Foundation”)

Christ taught us of a farmer who went out sowing seeds. A few had trouble growing among the rocks and weeds. But others grew till harvest in soil that was so good. O God, you sow the gospel: The seed is your own word.

You sowed your word of love here so many years ago.* Your message found a welcome; your word began to grow. By grace, this church was built here by saints who followed you. The seed took root and flourished: we hear and follow, too.

*Original wording was "You sowed your word of love here one hundred years ago." The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

Called into unity with one another and the whole creation, let us pray for our shared world.
