Father Tony Bawyn is a Seattle native who attended St. Luke

School in Shoreline. He began his seminary studies at

St. Edward Seminary and St. Thomas Seminary in Kenmore

and then graduated from Gonzaga University with a B.A. in

philosophy. He studied theology at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium

and came home to be ordained on August 21, 1982 at St. James Cathedral by

Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen.

His first assignment was as parochial vicar (assistant pastor) at Holy Rosary in

West Seattle. Since then he has served parishes in Kirkland (where he served with

Ann LaBeck), Tacoma, Vashon Island, Gig Harbor, and Seattle.

Aware that Father Jim Picton had facilitated a canonical internship for Father Tony

during his seminary days, Archbishop Murphy asked Father Tony to study canon

law for the Archdiocese in 1990. After receiving a licentiate degree from Louvain,

he served in the Chancery as canonical consultant, the place where he first met

Loretta Sursely. He then returned to Louvain for doctoral studies, finished his dis-

sertation and was awarded his diploma in 2000. Archbishop Brunett appointed

him Judicial Vicar in 2000, and he has been serving in that capacity in the Seattle

Tribunal for 20 years.

Last year Archbishop Sartain approved a sabbatical leave for him, so Father Tony

chose to return to Belgium for updating in theology. He has returned to the

Chancery and is pleased to begin his new ministry at Saint Madeleine Sophie Par-

ish. Father Tony has more than 25 years’ experience the model of parish priest

collaborating with a lay Pastoral Coordinator, and he finds it a good fit with his ca-

nonical work.

In his free time Father Tony loves to cook, to go on day hikes, listen to music, and

enjoy visiting his family, most of whom live in the Puget Sound area.

Welcome Fr. Tony Bawyn

Anointing of the Sick: First Friday of the Month at the 9am

Loretta Sursely, Pastoral Coordinator [email protected]

FIRST COMMUNION AND THE TRANSFIGURATION We celebrated First Communion again this Saturday August 1. And just like last week it was a special moment for the children and their families and for all of us in attendance. This week we will celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. How appropriate that it follows this weekend of First Communion.

At the Transfiguration, the Lord withdrew himself with his chosen few to a high mountain apart. So too we, Sunday by Sunday at the Eucharist are called to step aside from the busy world to be spend some time with Him.

At First Communion we are focused on the reception of Communion by the children, and with this focus we can see the important connection that the story of the Transfiguration makes to us. To spend time connecting, with intention just like our first time to the reception of the Eucharist. We are reminded that Jesus is to be at the center of our lives and have the highest place in our hearts. While Jesus was gloriously transfigured before the apostles, if we live our lives recognizing the presence of Jesus in our lives and the lives of others we shall be transformed!

SCHEDULE CHANGES We will have daily Mass, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 9am. We will not have adoration on Fridays but will have anointing of the sick during the Friday 9am Mass beginning August 7. You do not have to pre-register for a daily Mass or for the Rosary but you should sign in with name and contact number or email. However, you MUST REGISTER PRIOR to attending one of the weekend Masses. Masks are REQUIRED for attendance at any event or liturgy at the parish. See page 2 for details on other schedule changes.

5 Tips for A Spiritual Summer

The sights and sounds of summer can instantly offer a “refresh” moment in our lives. Fresh air, sunny skies, and warmer tempera-tures invite us outdoors!

The more relaxed and less-hectic (we hope!) pace of the summer months also gives us a chance to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with ourselves, our friends, and yes, even God! Here are five tips for making the most of this time of year. Visit Busted Halo for more info

Sunday Gospel activities—July 26 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Readings—http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings

Loyola Press Sunday Connection Family reflections and activities https://

Gospel Reading Matthew 14:13-21 Jesus feeds the crowd with five loaves and two fish. Family Connection In our family life we can sometimes hear echoes of the disciples' excuses: “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Sometimes this echo is heard from children squabbling about the last piece of cake. Sometimes it is heard in our con-cern about the limits of the family's income or pos-sessions. Sometimes this echo is heard in our complaints about the seemingly endless demands for our time and attention. Jesus understood these feelings and taught us to see beyond our limita-tions. Jesus modeled for us a compassion that reaches out to others, even when we would rather withdraw into ourselves. Jesus taught us that God blesses compassion offered to others with his grace. Today's Gospel reminds us that with God there is not only enough, there is an abundance! Talk together about some of the stresses and de-mands for time and attention that your family members might feel. Acknowledge that we some-times have to make difficult choices about how to use our time, talents, and treasure. Then read to-gether today's Gospel, Matthew 14:13-21. Notice how much Jesus cared for the crowds, healing the sick even though he wanted to with-draw to a quiet place. Notice how the disciples responded to Jesus' instruction to feed the crowd; they noted their limited supply of food. Jesus blessed this limited supply of food, and it was enough to feed the entire crowd, more than 5,000 people, and there were leftovers! Pray together that Jesus will grant us compassion like his so that we will offer whatever we have to others with compassion and generosity. Pray together today's Psalm, Psalm 145, or the Lord's Prayer. - Loyola Press

St. Madeleine Sophie Parish August 1 & 2, 2020

Reflection for August 2 2020 By: Ron Czarney “They all ate and were satisfied. . .” What are some of the things that give us satisfaction? How about a delicious meal prepared by our moms. Or, how about a day at the park playing baseball or soccer with our dads. Maybe a play date with our friends. There are so many things that give us pleasure that I wouldn’t have the space to mention them all here. But, you get the idea. In today’s gospel we see how Jesus “satisfies” about 5,000 people. That’s absolutely amazing! How does He do this?! Well, He does it because He loves us so very much. And, this gospel reading happens to be one of the most beautiful readings in the Bible for the message it carries. Imagine being able to follow Jesus and listen to Him speak of His Father and the Kingdom where His Fa-ther lives. And then after He shares this message with the people, He “cures” those who seek His healing power. Not only that, but then He feeds everyone! WOW! The people who were following Jesus didn’t know it at the time, but they were actually attending their very first Mass! Really?! Yes, really! Let’s look at the scene in today’s gospel. People gathered together to hear the word of God, and then they were fed by the Son of God — Jesus. Hmmm, that sounds awful-ly familiar. Where have we seen this scene before? Or when have we been part of such a celebration ourselves. Why every Sunday, of course! When we ourselves attend Mass. Doesn’t every Mass begin with a group of people gathering in church? And don’t we begin each Mass by asking for forgiveness of our sins (healing) and then listening to the word of God? And don’t we offer up bread and wine to the Father and ask Him to change these earthly food and drink items into the actually body and blood of His Son, Jesus? And aren’t we so blessed to be able to receive this “food” that feeds our souls? Yep, we’re right there on the mountain with Jesus listening to His message of love and forgiveness and healing. AND, to top it off, we are privileged to receive Him in Holy Communion with the rest of the con-gregation. I’m telling you, there’s no better way to satisfy one’s aching heart for God’s love than this gathering of God’s people. Today let’s thank our Heavenly Father for the gift of His Son, Jesus, who gives of Himself so freely and with such everlasting love. We love You, Jesus! AMEN!

REFUGEE OUTREACH MINISTRY The refugee team has been active in the parish since 2016. Since then, we have outfitted and prepared apartments for 9 refugee families. Our members have also volunteered at the offices of International Rescue Committee (IRC) in areas of apartment supplies and inventory, employment readiness, youth mentoring and reception desk. For information on upcoming events ask to be added to our mailing list email us at [email protected].

With the pandemic and its fallout, we are glad to share some good news regarding our refugee outreach ministry. Our normal avenues to support the resettlement agencies like IRC has been on hold indefinitely, since they are working primarily off-site. Recently, we were contacted through Ann LaBeck and Maggie Rader of our parish, that there is a homeless mother with 2 children, who has recently obtained housing, but needs all the essentials like we have been providing for the IRC refugee families. Maggie asked if the refugee committee could support this need.

I contacted our committee chairs and they all overwhelmingly agreed that we should use some of our household items and other resources to support this family. Earlier this month we collected bedding and other household items for this family of 3 from the inventory in our closet. A few items that were still needed we purchased using about $90 from the refugee fund that was endowed by donations in memory of Debbie Bowen.

As a result, we were able to furnish bedding, kitchenware, table ware, personal items and cleaning supplies pretty much in line with what we have provided for IRC refugee families. These items were delivered on Saturday, June 6.

The only thing in the apartment was a sofa. Many of these things were generously donated by all of you for the Advent giving tree or other drives.

Please know that your past generosity is still paying it forward. A bonus is that I understand the family speaks Farsi, so if not refugees, they are certainly strangers seeking a better life in our country. You are a part of making that dream come true.
