Dear Friends,

Why is our parish visi ng back-and-forth with the local Muslim Ahmadiyyah Mosque?, came the concerned ques on. Catholic teaching has three replies:

1. Muslims “together with us adore the one merciful God.” Muslims “venerate Jesus as a prophet; his Virgin Mother they also honor.” (Second Va can Council)

2. “Chris ans and Muslims live in the same world, marked by many signs of hope, but also by mul ple signs of anguish.” “It is a good thing to come to understand each other by learning to accept differences, by overcoming prejudices in mutual respect, and by working together for reconcilia on and ser-vice.” (Pope St. John Paul II)

3. “It is not possible to build bridges between people while forge ng God. But the converse is also true: it is not possible to establish true links with God, while ignoring other people. Hence it is important to intensify dialogue among the various religions, and I am thinking par cularly of dialogue with Islam. (Pope Francis)

It must be very difficult to maintain respec ul conversa on with Islam in places of unspeakable religious atroci es --- like the Middle East, the Philippines or parts of Africa. But we can’t let religious extremists and “nut-cases” (on their side or ours) prevent dialogue between devout Chris ans and devout Muslims. The United States has a wonderful tradi on of religious pluralism that we should honor and build on.

Someone once suggested this dialogue should happen, but only at high levels, between “experts,” --- since people young in their faith might be converted or prosely zed. While this is something to consider … what’s going to happen if people of good will stay separated and suspicious in their neighborhoods un l “experts” solve differences? Truth and reconcilia on come out more readily in dialogue than in isola on … and there are certainly truths that humble and simple people can absorb quicker than the learned and the clever. (Nevertheless, people with a genuine fear should probably seek out Alpha and adult catequesis instead.)

No, at least part of the bridge-building needs to take place locally. Once again Pope St. John Paul comes to our rescue (underlining is mine): “This is a fundamental dialogue which must be prac ced in neighborhoods, in places of work, in schools. This is the dialogue which is proper to believers who live together in a modern and pluralis c society.”

Peace, All Good! Fr. Mike

P. Mike

Confirmation

Dear Parish Families, During the summer, our team of wonderful catechist and youth leaders start preparing for the new con irmation season that begins in late September. Our team is excited to journey with your family and your teen towards the Sacrament of Con irmation. This is truly a special time of spiritual formation for your teen, one that I hope will strengthen your entire family. ProgramGoals Our goal as a program is to provide a setting that is safe, fun, and inviting in which participants are encouraged to deepen their faith and relationship with Jesus, the church community, and each other. We hope that our program helps teenagers to grow in their knowledge and excitement about their faith, and become more involved in our church community. We also hope to instill an attitude of justice and service into all of our participants as they prepare to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church. ProgramDescription

Our program is a 3 year process that follows the Diocese of San Bernardino guidelines for Con irmation. Our curriculum for classes comes from a combination of Life Teen and Dynamic Catholic. This programing uses dynamic videos to spark discussions about faith topics. For more information, please visit our website: www.smmchino.org/con irmation As you continue ministering to your family, your parish and the community, I ask you to be especially faithful in these areas: • Attend Sunday Liturgy and join one of our many wonderful parish ministries. • Support a parish ministry by serving with the gift of your time • Be true to the Biblical call to tithe. It is an honor and blessing serving our parish youth. Many thanks to those in the community who continue to pray and support the young people of our parish. In Christ, Joe Chiuppi RegistrationbeginsMonday,July9th
