Fr. Paul’s Homily

Listen and See Thirty-third Week in Ordinary Time 1 Mc 1:10-15,1-43, 54-57, 62-63; Lk 18:35-43

(When we read parables we can see them in different ways.)

7

The parables of Jesus actually exist on many different levels, as does all great literature. No great piece of literature has only one level, and so when we read parables we can see them in different ways.

Here one of the ways in which this parable expresses the work and mission of Jesus is the role or the way from hearing to seeing. You could take it in a purely physical sense that the blind man hears a commotion, asks what’s happening, finds out it’s Jesus passing by, and calls out to him in faith, thus receiving his sight; you could take it that way. But you could take it in a deeper way: that we are in our ordinary life not able to see God, although Jesus makes it clear when he offers the Beatitudes that those who are clean of heart can see God, and yet we are simply not disposed ordinarily to see God in one another, in ourselves, in the world. We may be struck by some extraordinary form of beauty: a sunset, a mountain, a moon, but we can pass our whole day by without ever seeing God. And this suggests, this parable suggests, it’s because we haven’t learned how to listen. It is the word spoken that is the source of truth and God’s own self-disclosure. And if we try to, in a daily way, listen to God, gradually we will see.

O Child, who willed to have for your crib a manger; O Creator of the universe, who stripped yourself of divine glory: O Redeemer, who offered your vulnerable body in sacrifice for the sal-vation of Humanity! May the radiance of your birth light up the night of the world. May the power of your message of love thwart the proud snares of the evil one. May the gift of your life make us understand ever more clearly the worth of the life of each human being.

--Pope John Paul II, Christmas Homily at Midnight Mass, 2003
