All Seniors Welcome

The Gift of Life will explore the process of death and dying as part of, rather than the end of, life’s journey. This experience will be made up of a daily meditation practice, spiritual reading and small group conversation that will keep our relationship with death and dying at the center of our prayer throughout Lent. The experience will begin with a Saturday afternoon retreat (lunch provided) and include five Monday evenings for additional learning and small group companionship.

Can death become something more than an enemy to fight and a tragedy when it arrives? We will find out

together by committing ourselves to daily meditation as we explore the insights of psychology, religious wisdom, and medical science looking at the end of life. This experience is intended for people with an established Centering

Prayer or meditation practice, but all are welcome, and a brief orientation to Centering Prayer will be part of the Saturday retreat.

The written and video materials we will be using are from Contemplative Outreach, Fr. Thomas Keating and the former hospice worker and Buddhist teacher, Kathleen Dowling Singh.

Becoming a Deacon? Deacon Fred Straub I always make a point, during baptisms, of reading the Transfiguration of Jesus, according to Luke, to illustrate how God calls each of us for a mission. As Jesus ascends the mountain with Peter and John to pray, both the disciples are stricken with sleep. Moses and Elijah begin talking to Jesus…speaking of his

departure “which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.” In other words, Jesus was given permission to fulfill what he had been called by God to do.

And thus, I was called by God while in high school. Your call can come anytime. My parents and I were Methodist and for some reason I began to receive my call from God while attending church—which incidentally was most times an hour and a half each Sunday, which included at least a 30-minute sermon (homily). I had attended Sunday School as well as the full church services when I was attending elementary school and sang in our Cardinal Choir.

My call got stronger as a freshman in college; I had decided to study to become a Methodist pastor. At the same time, I was called to study all the Christian religions; this led to my conversion to Catholicism—I was “hungry” to receive the Seven Sacraments which were not part of the Protestant religions. Then, later in life I received a call to study to become a Permanent Deacon and the rest is history. (We are called Permanent Deacons because we are not studying for ordination as Priests-if we were, we would be ordained as Transitional Deacons since we would move on from the Diaconate to Priesthood.)

And the question I get from others is, “I am active in several ministries, why do I have to become a Permanent Deacon?” My answer is, in 30 years as a Permanent

Deacon my ordination has given me back more than I have given. My ordination is for a lifetime—even though I am retired I constantly fill in for our active Deacons for marriage preparation and weddings, funeral preparation and funerals, on the altar during masses and, until recently, I was our parish coordinator for pastoral care.

As an ordained Deacon, I became part of the lives of our spiritual community at St. Margaret Mary, through helping to arrange liturgies for engaged couples and families who have lost a family member. Many is the time when a parishioner will say to me, “You baptized my son or my daughter 20 or 30 years ago and now they are married and have children.” In some families, I have baptized all their children’s children. What a feeling this gives me!!

I don’t want to interfere with God’s call for you; I want to focus you on focusing on your call from God. You might realize by focusing that God is calling you to be a Permanent Deacon. Unfortunately, only men can be ordained Permanent Deacons. However, Pope Francis has formed a committee to study the possibility to women being ordained (there were female Permanent Deacons in early Christian history).

DIOCESE OF JOLIET, OFFICE OF THE DIACONATE: You must be at least 35 years old to begin studying for the Permanent Diaconate. We expect Application for the 2024 Class to become available on the Diocese of Joliet, Office of Diaconate website in early Sept. 2019. There is a year of applications, interviews, screening, and among men invited for formation, one completes about 4 years of study. Advertising materials will be sent to the parishes publicizing some information/discernment sessions to be held at three (3) different diocesan locations. These will happen in late spring or early summer, 2019. Meanwhile, come talk to us.

For the Safety of Soldiers Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength

and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord

All are Welcome: Protecting the Unborn PRO-LIFE Committee Postcard Signing Campaign, February 2-3

HOW YOU CAN HELP SAVE LIVES (Either alone or with a group) PRO-L.I.F.E. MINISTRY (Life Is For Everyone) MISSION STATEMENT: The St. Margaret Mary Pro-L.I.F.E. Ministry works to spread the pro-life message by following the Bishops’ pastoral plan for pro-life activities: prayer, education, pastoral care, and affecting public policy. We work to bring attention to the sanctity of life for all people in all stages, but we focus on the issue of abortion, due to the huge number of abortions that are done annually. PRAYER: Prayer is the foundation of all we do in the Christian life, and use it in working to end abortion. Pray; in private - the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, your personal prayers, participate in 40 Days for Life which is held twice a year; pray at local abortion facilities in Aurora (Planned Parenthood) or Downers Grove (Access Health Clinic). EDUCATION: Keep yourself informed on pro-life issues. The following book titles are a few of those dealing with abortion: 1. Unplanned, 2. And Then There Were None, both by Abby Johnson, 3. Gospel by Ann McElhinney & Phelim McAleer, 4. The Beginning of the End of Abortion, by Shawn Carney. Pamphlets on pro-life issues are available in the pamphlet rack in the atrium. Our parish theme and calling in

God’s Word To Us

Reflection on Lectionary Readings 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Feb. 3, 2019

All are Welcome. Walk in Love.

“All are Welcome, Walk in Love.” Two very simple, straightfor-ward statements that are almost impossible to do, to live and to make an integral part of our lives and our parish. It seems today, no matter where you turn, you find examples of exclusion and hatred, no matter what part of our political or cultural spectrum you look at. So how do we live and grow in these challenging statements? How do we stand against the adversity that can come as we try to openly live the love of God? Jeremiah certainly faced the same kind of challenge as he spoke the prophetic message of warning to his people, but relied on the promise of the Lord’s presence to carry him through. Jesus was ostracized from his own home town when people stopped listening to the message and instead started examining his background and decided that there was no reason he should be so special. Look at our world today and see how every word we say can be taken out of context or used against us, no matter how long ago it might have been, or how we have grown since. I love technology, but it is only a tool, and like any tool, can also become a weapon. So, as people of faith, as disciples, how do we live and follow Je-sus? We can’t do it alone, but God promises that we don’t have to do it alone. We have God’s constant presence; we have one anoth-er; we have the Eucharist; and we have God’s Word in the Scrip-tures. And Paul tells us what must be the foundation of everything we do - LOVE! All the rest is so much costume jewelry and flash if we do not have love as the basis, the foundation of our lives and our actions. To welcome, accept, affirm and companion ALL on this journey, our bedrock foundation has to be love. It is the only thing that will keep us true to the way of Christ, living as he lived. And in reality, the journey, the struggle and the growth are actually the path that becomes the altar of God’s eternal presence in our lives. All are Welcome. Walk in Love. It is the only way to truly live the Good News!

- Deacon Ken Miles

Fr. Paul’s Homily

Love 1 Jn 4:7-10; Mk 6:34-44

(That’s why we need Christ, the definitive expression of who and what God is like.)

13

“Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.”

Although we have taken down our decorations, we are still in the Christmas Season savoring the meaning of the incarnation, as in the opening prayer of today’s Mass. We recognize outwardly Christ is like us so that we now can become inwardly like him.

For us to do that of course it means that we have to learn about what God really is. This is not obvious at all, even the word “love”: “God is love.” Well the way the word love is used very often is incorrect by this standard. Nature has many forms of attraction, but they’re not always what is meant here by “love.” Nature has many forms of attraction and repulsion. But in nature attraction and repulsion are

mechanical, they are thoughtless, they are involuntary, and unintentional, but not love, not what is meant here. Love is conscious. Love is intentional. Love is voluntary, and it expresses most favorably, most completely, the nature of God as revealed in Christ.

Now the nature of God, as discerned by some of the ancient philosophers, was good. Well good is good. It’s a good word. It’s true. But love says more. So God is good, but God is love, which is more because love involves an endurance, as St. Paul says in 1 Corinthians, an endurance. “Love endures all things.” Love, in a sense, defines, at least for believers, what is really good. You could have different views on goodness. You can have different views on all kinds of things and all kinds of words and

concepts. That’s why we need Christ. Christ is not a concept. Christ is not a word. Christ is the Word of God, not one of our words, but the Word of God, therefore, the definitive expression of who and, if you want, what God is like—who God is and what God is like. That is the Word. And that Word is incarnate in Jesus of Nazareth, and his life shows us, witnesses to us, what love is like.

In today’s gospel it’s love being generous. Well love is generous. Eventually on the cross he teaches us love is willing to endure all things and to suffer infinitely. This is the love revealed in Christ. This is the love we are called on to become.
