She replied, “If the Lord had not forgiven all, then the world would not still be here.” Pope Francis used this conversation to illustrate his conviction that the Lord never tires of forgiving us. He said, “Let us not forget this word: God never tires of forgiving us, but we sometimes tire of asking Him to forgive us…. Let us never tire of asking God’s forgiveness.” Francis used as his text John 8:1-11: the woman caught in adultery. While Jesus was teaching in the Temple the scribes and Pharisees brought to him a woman who had been caught in adultery. They said, “’Teacher…in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, sir.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again.’” Francis said that mercy is the key point of the Gospel account: “Mercy is the Lord’s most powerful message. It is not easy to trust oneself to the mercy of God, because God’s mercy is an unfathomable abyss but we must do it. He had the ability to forget: he forgets our sins, he kisses you, he embraces you, and he says to you, ‘Neither do I condemn you. Vestry Highlights

The St. Mark’s Vestry met on Tuesday, March 19, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bennett Wing classroom. Each

vestry member signed two letters of support for Mary Ann Huston’s ordination to Holy Orders in the

Episcopal Diocese of Texas: The Vestry Letter of Support for Candidacy and the Vestry Letter of Support

for Ordination to Deacon. Among other items discussed:

The Wednesday evening soup suppers and worship have gone well, with good turnout each week.

Philip Turner’s Sunday morning class went well also.

Vestry members were encouraged to help with the Meditation Trail clean up on Saturday, March

23.

The youth are going to fix up one of the two sheds for their own space.

Work continues on the choir loft: we are now waiting for the new pews, shelves, and desk to be

completed and delivered.

The deck has been partially repainted, though they missed a few places.

Our overall income for YTD is at 121.23% which reflects/includes $13,000 in prepayments for

2013.

We have not been billed by Austin Energy since October. New Vestry member, Shelly Botkin,

has been in conversation with them for the past month and will continue to pursue it. We are one

of 20 or so churches that have not been billed since the rate changes.

Re. Outreach: for El Buen we are collecting specific items each month; the Habitat Build is on

May 18; we have requested 3 nights in June to provide dinner for the Ronald McDonald House;

we have requested a Saturday during the summer to sort food at the Capital Area Food Bank; we

have been asked to help with the Sunday meal for Trinity Streets and we are going to involve the

youth on a quarterly basis; we are going to request a blood drive in August; and we have begun a

conversation with Roger Temme of the Care Communities to put together a team of 4-6

parishioners.

Gina Newton, the head of the Day School, has submitted her resignation effective at the end of

the school year. Elizabeth+ and Katie Duffy (the President of the Board) are meeting with

representatives from SAES on March 20.

Congratulations to Mary Ann Huston who has been approved for

ordination in the Diocese of Texas! Mary Ann, and our seminarian

Jeremiah Griffin, will be ordained to the Transitional Diaconate on

Saturday, June 15 in Houston. Mark your calendars and plan on

celebrating this great occasion.

Outreach

The Care Communities

The co-chairs of the Outreach Committee (Laurie Mayor and Becky Poynot) and Elizabeth+ met with Roger Temme,

the Volunteer Recruitment Director for The Care Communities, to discuss the possibility of forming a St. Mark’s team

to participate in this wonderful volunteer opportunity.

The Care Communities provides volunteer Care Teams for persons living with HIV/AIDS or cancer. The Care Team

consists of three to six persons matched with a client. The volunteers provide practical and emotional support, such

as running errands, transportation to medical appointment, food bank, grocery store, yard work, companionship, etc.

From each volunteer they ask four to five hours a month. There is more information on their website:

www.thecarecommunities.org. If this opportunity is of interest to you, please contact Elizabeth+, Becky, or Laurie.

El Buen Samaritano Habitat for Humanity

For April the Outreach Committee is collecting low-sodium canned soup

on behalf of El Buen Samaritano. Help stock the food pantry by bringing your donations to the Parish Hall!

Are you looking for a great way to volunteer as a family? El Buen needs

volunteers of all ages to come by on Friday, April 12, between 9-11 a.m. to spruce up its Community Garden. No need to sign up! Just show up at 7000 Woodhue Dr. 78745.

Save the Date! May 18. St. Mark’s

will participate in a Habitat for Humanity Build. We need 20 volunteers to build and additional volunteers for the lunch crew. Sign up in the Parish Hall.

Shower Ministry at Trinity Center

We are in the process of reorganizing and revitalizing the Shower Ministry for women at the Trinity Center. They need us back! (The problem with the hot water has been resolved, but there are women taking sponge baths in the restroom.) If you can spare a few hours on a Tuesday morning, please call Dodie Wells at (512) 369-3668, email [email protected], or call the church office. It is a wonderful opportunity to serve our community.

St. David’s is Collecting Seasonal Items for Trinity Center

The Trinity Center has an immediate need for seasonal clothing and other items. Please consider bringing donations of the following items to the red barrels in the lobby of St. David's:

Shorts and pants for women, larger sizes preferred.

Socks, shoes, and sandals

Hats and sunglasses

Lanyards with plastic ID holders

Bags of all kinds

Small-size hygiene products, including sunscreen

Moms’ Cafe

Moms’ Cafe is a group for moms with children at St. Mark's and the St. Mark's Day School. The group meets

once a month for uninterrupted conversation about the joys and challenges of motherhood and parenting.

Currently, we are discussing Brene Brown's book The Gifts of Imperfection. This group is led by Suzanne

Smith, mother of two, who wants to offer a time for mothers to come together and just be.

Childcare is provided and our experience is enriched by delicious morning treats and coffee.

Most of all, Moms’ Cafe is a time to grow deeper with a group of women who are

committed to raising their children and enhancing their own self-awareness in the light of

faith and family. We meet the first Wednesday of each month from 8:45-10:45 a.m. in the

From the Garden

This spring’s warmer days and cool nights have nudged the buds on our trees and shrubs to open and bloom recently. It is delightful to see the effect of even a light rain, which is pretty much the norm these days. McKinney Isle is lovely: the roses and salvias there are showing color, and Parish admin Joanne Foote and her mom, Pattie Rose, have been sprucing up the entrance garden again. Pattie is facing hand surgery, but found time to begin cleaning out and reorganizing volunteer plants, transplanting when possible. Joanne’s gift of wood violets can be seen peeping out of the freshened bed near the office door, and snapdragons and dianthus are showing off their colors. Our early Easter was colorful after all!

Look for an announcement for an April work party to spread mulch and do some winter cleanup. In the meantime, Becky Nolan sure needs a partner to help with the corner/sign area. We all miss gardener Roberta Pazdral who transplanted herself back to New Zealand, but working the soil is fun, especially working with others, and Becky needs help! With spring in the air, it is the perfect time to Adopt a Spot!

Festival Evensong for Eastertide

Sunday, May 5 -- 5:00 p.m.

The St. Mark’s Choir invites you to a Service of Festival Evensong at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5th. The

Christian tradition of Evening Prayer, or Vespers, dates back through centuries of monastic practice. The

1662 Book of Common Prayer combined elements from the two monastic evening liturgies into the

traditional Anglican service of Evening Prayer. When portions of the service are sung by a choir, the

liturgy is called Evensong. This service is offered weekly in most Anglican cathedrals and collegiate

chapels. It is a service in which the words of scripture are surrounded by songs of reflection and

exuberance, moments of silence and outbursts of glorious sound. It is a time to welcome the close of the

day with an hour of joy and beauty.

Our service of Evensong will feature a variety of choral music—including a traditional British setting of

the canticles by Charles V. Stanford, Anglican chant, an ethereal new work by Houston composer David

Ashley White, a beautiful new rendering of “Amazing Grace,” and a lively Spiritual.

A reception will follow the service in the Parish Hall.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend!

Christian Formation

For Children and Youth (by Cathy Nelson, Director of Religious Education)

Over the years during the Season of Easter, St. Mark’s has offered an Instructed Eucharist for children and

parents and other adults interested in learning more about this sacrament. This year, Mother Elizabeth will

lead an Instructed Eucharist on Sunday, April 14, following the 11:00 a.m. service.

This informal class is helpful to parents who are introducing their children to the ritual of communion or just

answering those interesting questions that come as children experience it, along with those who would like a

refresher course. Although, as Gretchen Wolff Pritchard writes in Offering the Gospel to Children, it is almost

impossible to explain why we say we are eating the Body and drinking the Blood of Jesus.

The good news is that, as Pritchard says, “Children who have been fed at the Lord’s table since earliest infancy

are like children who have had plenty of hugs and kisses—they hardly need to be taught about God’s love in

bread and wine, because they already know all about it: they feel it in their bones.” Later, when we begin

having conversations that teach about the Eucharist, the “teaching will be an enrichment of the knowledge they

already have, not a substitute for it or a set of adult interpretations that must be grasped before we can trust

them with the experience itself.”

In his book Building God’s People in a Materialistic World, priest and theologian John H. Westerhoff writes

about living into our baptisms as faithful stewards of God. In his chapter called Life as Eucharist: Liturgical

Catechesis, he also says that children need to participate in the liturgy from a very early age, before they can

rationally understand it, in order to experience the Gospel. Westerhoff calls the Eucharist a “family

thanksgiving banquet,” adding, “The way we worship is to be the way we live. If there is any ritual act that is

specifically and essentially Christian it is the celebration of the Eucharist; its purpose is to shape us and

empower us to live eucharistic lives.”

April 2013

Page 7

If that is true, we will want to be present at the table with our children sharing with them the banquet that feeds

us in preparation for living a eucharistic life. As Westerhoff says, “At the close of the liturgy they(we) are sent

forth, as a thankful people to love and serve the Lord, fully aware of what God has done and has empowered

them(us) to do. Thanks be to God!”

Church School classes for children will resume on April 7 at 10 a.m.

Godly Play: This month the pre-kindergartners and kindergartners will hear a Ukrainian Folk Tale about

Easter Eggs; a story about Jesus’ ministry called Jesus and the Twelve; explore how all Christians come

to the altar together in The Good Shepherd and World Communion; and finally The Synagogue and the Upper Room.

Godly Play Two: The class for 1st and 2

nd graders will hear Jesus and the Twelve, The Good Shepherd

and World Communion, The Synagogue and the Upper Room, and the Mystery of Pentecost.

3rd

, 4th

and 5th

Grade Class: The classes will continue discussions on the early Church in the stories of

Saul’s conversion (Acts 9:1-19), Peter’s escape from jail (Acts 12:1-19a), Herod’s death (Acts 12:19b-

23), and Paul in Athens (Acts 17:16-34). More exciting Biblical adventures that the kids will explore

through thoughtful discussion and activities and art.

Middle School and High School: These groups will meet with Travis Smith and teachers Danielle

Adkins, Jay Brown, Kathy Genet, and Harry Lipp for Bible study. The stories this month are Jesus’

resurrection (Luke 24:1-35), Jesus eating with his disciples (John 21:1-19), Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-

31), and Peter disowns Jesus (Luke 22:54-62).

The Easter Egg Hunt was a wonderful event again this year! I’d like to thank the youth for hiding the

eggs and helping guide the hunters. We couldn’t do it so well without you!

For Adults Adult Formation classes resume on the first Sunday of April. On April 7 and 14 we will hear from our

senior seminarians, Jeremiah Griffin and Jonathan Hansen. On April 21 and 28 we will welcome Nathan

Jennings+ back, to talk about the Sacrament of Reconciliation of a Penitent.

A Thank-You Note from Elizabeth

Thank you to all of you who made the season of Lent and our celebration of Easter an occasion for fellowship,

faithful Christianity, and celebration: Mark, our choirs, and additional musicians for stunning music; Brenda White

and her faithful Marthas for all the setting up, decorating, and hospitality during the season; the Daughters of the

King for hosting a Lenten Quiet Day; Travis, Mary Ann, and the seminarians for the Lenten meditative readings; Jay

Brown and Jim Casparis for changing out banners and for draping the cross three times; members of the Altar Guild

for the extra work the season involves; Philip Turner for teaching our Sunday morning class; the pancake chefs on

Shrove Tuesday and the soup chefs on Wednesday evenings; the crew who helped with the Meditation Trail clean

up; the office volunteers who had extra bulletins to fold; and of course to the staff for working hard and enjoying

one another’s company during what could have been a stressful time. And a special thank you to Kathy Genet for

her architectural genius and oversight of the choir loft improvements.

Parishioner Highlights

Lucy says that she and Tom joined the St. Mark’s family in 1978. I know that when John & I

joined the church a few years later that they impressed me as fun, out-going people that I

wanted to get to know better. My first impression was right on and it indeed was enjoyable

getting to know them better and impressive watching their family grow . . . and grow! I salute

Lucy’s many accomplishments (to include parenting) and we thank her for all that she has done

and continues to do for St. Mark’s.

Beth Chenoweth

Lucy Joyce

My family consists of five children: Matt,

now married to Vanessa; Rebecca, now

married to Joe Anthony; Ben; Kathleen; and

Allison. They all grew up in St. Mark’s, and

now I have four grandchildren: Henry and

John Anthony and Corina and Douglas

Joyce. My husband Tom was very active in

St. Mark’s from 1978 until his death from

leukemia in 2001. He was

recruited for the vestry

after a fairly short period

of attendance by the

rector at that time, Don

Raish. Father Raish did

acknowledge that Tom

would have to be received

into the Episcopal Church

before he could actually

serve on the vestry, but

that was accomplished with all due speed.

And they say Episcopalians are no good at

evangelism!

I have been active in St. Mark’s in several

capacities. I helped with Christian

Education when my children were young,

and I did a little work with altar guild and

served on the outreach committee. I have

served as treasurer since 1984. I did have

two years away from the treasurer position,

but I have been in that role steadily since

2003. I never thought my volunteerism

would end up as my career, but it seems to

have done just that.

I have also served as treasurer of St. Mark’s

Episcopal Day School during this time, and

that has brought involvement with that

community. In addition to being part of the

St. Mark’s community, I enjoy running (not

very fast), reading and participating in a

couple of book clubs, and music.

I live very near St. Mark’s, in Barton Hills. If

I could give myself about 18 minutes, I

could just walk to church.

St. Mark’s has been and continues to be a

very important part of my life. It has

provided community, friendship, and

support for most of my adult life. I feel very

lucky to be part of a church with such good

leadership, congregational participation,

history and most of all . . . love.
