The Anointing of the Sick
W hen Jesus sent out the twelve, he ordered them to
proclaim repentance, and “they cast out many dev-
ils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured
them” (Mc 6:13). In his letter James recommends: “Any
one of you who is ill should send for the priests of the
church, and they must anoint the sick person with oil in
the name of the Lord and pray over him. The prayer of
faith will save the sick person and the Lord will raise him
up again; and if he has committed any sins, he will be for-
given” (Jm 5:14-15). The Anointing of the Sick involves
the forgiveness of sins if the sick person is unable to re-
ceive it through the sacrament of reconciliation. It is also
a liturgical and communal celebration like the other sacra-
ments.
When I was a teenager and an altar server in the Con-
go, I was involved in the celebration of the sacrament of
the sick. This happened when a man in a hurry showed up
just after Mass. He said, “A priest is needed in the hospi-
tal to anoint my son.” My pastor asked me to accompany
him. After his son had been anointed, the father went back
home. He called together his friends and neighbors and
said to them, "my son will die very soon as the priest has
anointed him. Let's prepare his funeral.” After many hours
of waiting, his son got better and better. Therefore the
father spread the news that my pastor is a powerless priest
because his son never died after being anointed by him.
My pastor noticed that people need to be catechized about
the anointing of the sick.
After being ordained a priest, I easily put myself in the
shoes of my old pastor. I have experienced that some peo-
ple, the sick person or relatives, are so allergic to the pres-
ence of a man in black at the bedside of a loved one.
Many are those who are afraid of the anointing of the
sick. They are convinced that the sacrament of the sick
involves the death of their loved one. Such a correlation is
understandable because, in general, people wait until a
person is at the point of death to receive the sacrament of
the sick. They often ignore that the anointing of the sick is
not only for the dying, but it is also a sacrament for heal-
ing and strength that brings divine grace to the sick. Death
or healing can happen, according to the will of God, after
receiving the sacrament of the sick.
Therefore, it can be administered to a Christian who is
about to leave this earthly life to prepare him for our
heavenly home. It also provides special grace to those
Christians who are experiencing the difficulties related to
the condition of grave illness or old age. Our mother
Church recommends this sacrament to a Christian who
falls seriously sick, or who is having a surgery, or who,
after he has received it, the sickness worsens (Cf. Cate-
chism of the Catholic Church, #1511-1532).
The Parisot Foundation The Parisot Foundation will hold it's 6th Annual Dinner Dance for Haiti on Saturday, September 28, from 7 - 10pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Norwood. There will be a buf-fet, dancing, a variety of raffle baskets, as well as the grand drawing for the large raffle items! Come help support the con-tinued building of the school in Jacmel. Giving trees have been placed in both St. Martha and St. Mary with tags on them with items that are needed for children's backpacks.
There are white tags with items needed by children living in foster homes in our area. Choose a tag with an item/items you wish to buy and place the item(s) under or near the giving tree. All items must be donated by the end of September.
"Hurricane Dorian Relief" This weekend's second collection (9/21 & 22) will be for the Hurricane Dorian Relief efforts in the dioceses of the Baha-mas and the United States. All loose money placed in the second collection basket will go to this cause. If you use the parish collection envelopes and would like your second collection donation to go to the relief efforts instead of the Parish Building/Maintenance Fund, please write "Hurricane Dorian Relief" on your envelope.
Bible Study with Fr. Lambert Continues Fr. Lambert's introductory Bible Study class has been a great success. He will continue teaching the Gospel of John in this Bible Study program. Fr. Lambert offers this class on the sec-ond and fourth Wednesdays of each month the next class is on September 25 from 7 - 9pm in St. Mary conference room.
Blessing of the Animals St. Martha Parish will be holding a blessing of the animals for the feast of St. Francis on Saturday, October 5th at 12:00 noon. Bring your pets to the grounds of St. Martha Parish
for a blessing. All are welcome!!
Faithful to the recommendation of the Church, our collabora-
tion is celebrating the Anointing of the Sick Mass on Sunday,
September 29th at 2:30pm. Father Joe and I invite you to at-
tend. I am happy to attend as I already received this sacra-
ment four times! As you know, I am still alive according to

Kick the flu before it kicks you, get your flu shot! St. Martha’s Parish and CVS are collaborating to offer a free flu clinic for the 2019-2020 flu season on Sunday, September
29th in the parish hall after the 8 o’clock Mass and before the 10 o’clock Mass. All are wel-come to the clinic ages 9 and up. Protect yourself, protect your loved ones, and be prepared for this upcoming flu season!

Living Bread Food Pantry The food pantry located at the Methodist church is always in need of food and toiletry donations from generous parishioners like you. Please consider donating to those in need in our community. The pantry is open Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm. You may also leave your donation by the church elevator the second Sunday of each month. blood drive to benefit the Ameri-
can Red Cross on Friday, Sep-
tember 27 from 1:00 - 6:00pm in the parish hall.
You can register for your desired donation time by sign-

code of 7341. Walk ins are welcome. VOLUNTEERS
are needed to help register participants and assist in

Our annual collaborative Mass of Anointing will be held
on Sunday, September 29 at 2:30pm at St. Mary Parish
Wrentham.
Volunteers Needed: To push wheelchairs or walk be-
side parishioners using walkers or canes. This is an excel-
lent opportunity to meet and get aquainted with our nurs-
ing home or homebound parishioners, as well as for stu-
dents to get community service hours.
Owners of a wheelchair van, mini van or sedan to drive
homebound to the church and home again.
Finger food bakers for the collation after Mass are
needed. Please no baked goods with peanut butter or
nuts.

CIA - NEWS SAVE THE DATE FOR OUR FALL RETREAT, 11/9 - 11/10 The CIA (Catholics In Action) High School Youth Group is open to all high school teens in grades 9 - 12.
The CIA teens and youth ministers meet Tuesday nights from 7:00-9:00 pm in the basement of the St. Mary Parish
rectory. The entrance to our CIA youth group room is downstairs on the Minot Street side of the building.
The meetings are brief gatherings that act as a spiritual break in the week, where teens can escape the stresses of daily
life and connect with God and those going through similar experiences in high school. In an informal way, the teens
further their relationship with Jesus and experience His unconditional love by praying as a community with and for one
another and our intentions. The "Friends of the CIA" meet once a month to brainstorm fundraising ideas and activity

The St. Mary/St. Martha CYO Basketball program is for boys and girls grades 5-12 who live in Wrentham and Plainville. Our collaborative CYO is a member of the Norfolk Vicariate within the Archdiocese of Boston CYO Basket-ball program. This is not a recreational or instructional league, but instead a competitive program. There are weekday prac-tices which begin in late October and the games, which are played on weekends, begin in early December and continue through the end of February. Try-outs and/or evaluations take place before the number of teams are determined. All players must register for try-outs to be considered. Sign Ups are from September 1st to October 7th. VIRTUS: Protecting God's Children All those involved in Volunteer Ministries are required to be trained in VIRTUS: Protecting God's Children. A training
session will be held at St. Mary Parish on Sunday, September 29 at 10:45am for any volunteers who haven't already

The 40 Day For Life Campaign begins in Attle-
boro on September 25 and ends on November
3rd. The goal of the campaign is to pray for con-
version of hearts and ultimately an end to legalized
abortion. There is a threefold compo-
nent: prayer, fasting, and giving public wit-
ness outside the clinic to share the truth about abortion with
those seeking abortions. For these 40 days, people are asked
to give public witness anytime from 6 AM to 6 PM. The side-
walk surrounding Angell Park , directly across from Four
Women Inc., provides a peaceful place to pray and give wit-
ness. Stop by to pray. Prayer, fasting and witness are particu-
larly needed on Wednesdays and Saturdays when surgical and
chemical (pill) abortions take the lives of hundreds of preborn children. Please know that your prayers and sacrifices can
make a difference between life and death for the unborn child.
