Page 3: St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Archdiocese … · St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Archdiocese of Galveston Houston 816 Park Dr. La Porte,

Dear parish family, 4 Sunday C Last Thursday (Jan 31) the Archdiocese released the names of the Clergy who were credibly accused of sexual abuse of children in the past 70 years. It is very sad and painful reminder of the past but the US bishops have agreed to do this to demonstrate clearly accountability and transparency. And once for all deal with this issue publicly for healing and assurance of the determination of the church to eradicate this stain and shame that damage the image of the church. At the point of this writing, I don’t have details. The numbers maybe shocking since they counted from1950’s up to present and many are already deceased, retired, some defrocked or no longer in the ministry. Taken together to cover 70 years, it really looks bad. To put in context, since 1950 up to the present there were/are already thousands of priests serving in this Archdiocese and thus the list is a small fraction, a tiny percentage. Unfortunately, it seems that news accounts have painted the Church and its hierarchy with too broad a brushstroke –condemning all for the failings of a few. Thousands of good and faithful priests are tainted by the actions of those who abused the most vulnerable in their care. The wonderful programs and policies of the Church have become overshadowed by more salacious headlines. In the past, the church as do other social institutions didn’t have yet established mechanisms to address the sexual abuse of children. We learn bad lessons and now understand better and have grown up stronger and more purified. Since 2002 upon the church’s implementation of the Charter of the Protection of Children and Zero tolerance the cases significantly dropped. At present one active ongoing case which is in the news happened in the late1990’s. Sexual abuse of children is a painful and sad reality due human frailty and sinfulness and illness. This malady is however not isolated to the Catholic Church, it is in fact across the board and affects all churches and institutions both religious and secular. We can just imagine if other institutions (such as schools for example) would publish the names of their employees being accused of the same. In fact, it is only the Catholic Church that deals with this issue so strongly and implemented strict policies for the protection of Children. The “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People” which the Church implemented is a comprehensive set of procedures and guidelines for the prevention of acts of abuse. The Charter directs action in creating a safe environment for children and young people; Healing and reconciliation of victims and survivors; Making prompt and effective response to allegations; cooperating with civil authorities; providing for means of accountability for the future to ensure the problem continues to be effectively dealt with and be eradicated. Everybody who works in the church is mandated for “Virtus” training - a component of the Charter. And beginning this January the “Virtus” is replaced/updated with CMG (Catholic Mutual Group) Safe Protection program. All church workers will be notified for renewal of their training. In each period of church history there are always times of challenges but God works in ways beyond our measure. The good news is that the grace of God is stronger than sin. While we lament the sins, we should not dwell on the past or just focus on the stain but see the larger picture. We rejoice in the many holy and heroic Clergy who are faithful to the mission entrusted to them. We are grateful with the works of evangelization the church has brought the world and fulfilling the mission of the salvation of souls the Lord entrusted to her. In this Sunday’s gospel we are reminded of the story that Jesus was almost thrown to the cliff because his townspeople didn’t like what he said (eventually to His death on the Cross). In doing God’s work we always have opponents. Jesus himself is our model and we know He is the victor not the devil. What can we do? First, we can turn to our God in prayer. He never ceases to guide his Church, to sanctify its members, and to protect it from harm. Once again and still, we turn to Jesus, our High Priest, and find consolation and strength in his Word and Sacraments. Blessings to all and have a good week Fr. Tony
