FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

My good friends, Happy and blest New Year to all! It seems that we are rapidly coming to the end of a great Christmas Season here at St. Mary and St. Gertrude. Esperanza studied with us for a while and then was fi-nally able to make her First Holy Communion during the 11:30am Mass Sunday morning. While it’s a long story and a complicated journey, I’m printing, with Esperanza’s per-mission, the fact that everyone should be constantly evaluating and re-evaluating their Spiritual lives. If you are not married in the church, or if you never made your confirmation or communion, please talk to Deacon Mike (or any of us) to begin some-thing new. Maybe this is the year? Congratulations to Esperanza, and thanks for your beautiful example! One of my favorite moments from this Christmastime was the Posada. The very last of the visits was held right here in our rectory. (Thank God for Estebana and friends; I did not have to do anything but show up….usually I should have done cook-ing and shopping etc...) The best is that, at one point, they expected ME to hit and break open the Piñata. Needless to say, the kids did better than I! But it was a good laugh. May God send a blessing to all who worked ‘behind the scenes’ to make our litur-gies and our family so spirited this year. Remember, if at all possible, we should keep our decorations up until the baptism of the Lord (next Sunday). As I ride around the neighborhood, I must com-mend some houses that took a great deal of time to ‘light up’ your block. NICE!

NEW YEAR PRAYER:

Thank you Lord for giving us this brand new year. Help us live the way we should as each new day we hold dear.

The Epiphany of the Lord

LIGHT OF THE WORLD We believe that Jesus the Light of the World. To say this about Jesus is to say something about ourselves. Christ’s light is meant to illuminate every corner of the earth and gather all people together. Today’s scriptures reveal what that means. In the Gospel story of the magi from the East we see Jesus, even as an infant, gathering people of different religions and race to his light. The magi bring the child their finest gifts and tell others of the light that they have seen. The reading from Ephesians reminds us that all Christians are “members of the same body, and copartners” in divine life. There ought not to be divisions among us: all should gather together under the light of Christ. Finally, Isaiah paints a picture of what the people of God, the church, should look like. We are to reflect the Light of the World so that all nations can walk by Christ’s light and rulers by his shinning radiance. When we do, all people will be gathered to Christ, bearing their finest gifts and “proclaiming the praises of the Lord”

GOLD, FRANKINCENSE, AND MYRRH The gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh portend the manner in which Jesus’ light is to spread to the whole world. Myrrh, a perfume used for burial, foreshadows his death. Gold is a gift for royalty, and frankincense signifies holiness. Together they indicate that, through his suffering and death, Jesus will become both the afflicted King, in whose service we are to offer our gifts to the afflicted, and the eternal Priest, whose sacrifice we are to make known as the sources of light uniting Christians and all humanity.

The Epiphany of the Lord

O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only

Son to the people of the earth; Lead us, who know you

now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy

Spirit, one God for ever.

Amen.

Guía a tu presencia a los que ahora te conocemos por fe, para que veamos tu Gloria cara a cara;

siempre. Amen.
