Gospel for next Sunday July 19, 2020 MT 13:24-43 OR 13:24-30 Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”

The Word’s Return 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) Isaiah 55:10-11 Psalm 65:10-14 Romans 8:18-23 Matthew 13:1-23 Today’s readings, like last week’s, ask us to meditate on Israel’s response to God’s Word—and our own. Why do some hear the word of the kingdom, yet fail to accept it as a call to conversion and faith in Jesus? That question underlies today’s Gospel, especially. Again we see, as we did last week, that the king-dom’s mysteries are unfolded to those who open their hearts, making of them a rich soil in the which the Word can grow and bear fruit. As we sing in today’s Psalm, in Jesus, God’s Word has visited our land, to water the stony earth of our hearts with the living waters of the Spirit (see John 7:38; Revelation 22:1). The firstfruit of the Word is the Spirit of love and adoption poured into our hearts in baptism, making us children of God, as Paul reminds us in today’s Epistle (see Romans 5:5; 8:15-16). In this, we are made a “new creation” (see 2 Corinthians 5:17), the firstfruits of a new heaven and a new earth (see 2 Peter 3:13). Since the first humans rejected God’s Word, creation has been enslaved to futility (see Genesis 3:17-19; 5:29). But God’s Word does not go forth only to re-turn to Him void, as we hear in today’s First Reading. His Word awaits our response. We must show ourse-lves to be children of that Word. We must allow that Word to accomplish God’s will in our lives. As Jesus warns today, we must take care lest the devil steal it away or lest it be choked by worldly concerns. In the Eucharist, the Word gives himself to us as bread to eat. He does so that we might be made ferti-le, yielding fruits of holiness. And we await the crowning of the year, the great harvest of the Lord’s Day (see Mark 4:29; 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 1:10)—when His Word will have achieved the end for which it was sent. El viento nos pega en el rostro. A lo lejos Cristo, en una barca, nos quiere hablar. Levanta su voz y parece que se ayuda de las olas del mar para hacernos llegar su mensaje. Con la tranquila y suave brisa de la costa se escapan de los labios de Jesús unas «palabras» que, al parecer, sólo nos transmiten aspectos sencillos de la vida rural. Cual estadio de fútbol la muchedumbre cla-ma con cada palabra de su boca. Algunas de estas pala-bras comienzan a retumbar en nuestros oídos: “Al esparcir las semillas, algunas cayeron al borde del camino y los pájaros las comieron” ¿Qué es esto? ¿En qué consisten todas estas semillas? Parece muy confu-so, pero al momento continúan las siguientes casi sin dejarnos pensar: “Otras cayeron en terreno pedregoso”,. “Otras cayeron entre espinas”,. “Otras cayeron en tierra buena y dieron fruto”. Mientras todas estas palabras resuenan en nuestro corazón, buscamos una solución. Cuando De pronto unas palabras, si se puede decir, más confusas misteriosas saltan de su boca: “¡El que tenga oídos, que oiga!”. Nos tocamos, y sentimos que tenemos oídos, pero ¿escuchamos? Las palabras del Señor han dado en el clavo. Muchas veces parece que en los sermones de nuestros curas/sacerdotes, o en las palabras que nos di-cen de nuestros padres podemos oír a Dios, pero ¿escuchamos? Y podemos decir que mucho de todas estas palabras están en nuestra mente, pero ¿ya las he-mos bajado al corazón? Aquí está la clave del Evangelio. Escuchar es “prestar atención a lo que se oye”, y esto implica que toda nuestra persona se involucra. ¿Qué mejor manera de involucrarnos sino haciendo realizando lo que escucha-mos? Esta es nuestra parte del trabajo. Hemos oído al Maestro, y sus palabras han resonado en nuestro inte-rior. Solo tenemos que ponerlas en práctica, y lo mejor es que Él nos las explique. Ellos le dijeron: ‘¿Quieres que vaya-mos a arrancarla?’ Pero él les contestó: ‘No. No sea que al arrancar la cizaña, arranquen también el trigo. Dejen que crezcan juntos hasta el tiempo de la cosecha y, cuando lle-gue la cosecha, diré a los segadores: Arranquen primero la cizaña y átenla en gavillas para quemarla; y luego almace-nen el trigo en mi granero’ ”.
